Later, walk across the park for a supper cruise or an evening of downtown dining and entertainment, then stroll home with the moon reflected across the shimmering water. The Gumprecht Beach House is situated on property that once was part of Fort Sherman, established in 1878 to protect settlers. Eventually the property was auctioned and subdivided, creating the historic "Fort Grounds" neighborhood. Recently extensively renovated and refurbished, the house was originally constructed in 1907 as the first private beach home. It was built on the pick of the lots, and, consequently, enjoys unsurpassed views of beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene from 3 of the 5 bedrooms (including the fully-appointed 3rd floor master suite), 2 lake-view parlors, 2 lake-view sunrooms, and the east stairwell where a view of the famous Coeur d'Alene Resort is framed by the windows. The Gumprecht House is located on the beach, not near the beach, and the beach is a part of the property right down to the water line. The start for the Ironman Triathalon is located just across the street where also passes the 24-mile Centennial Trail. Within 4 blocks are the city park with bandshell and quaint children's playground (modeled after Fort Sherman), the city beach with lifeguards (in season), the Tubbs Hill nature preserve, downtown shops, sidewalk cafes, the very famous Hudson's Hamburgers (since 1907, 5th generation, a "must"--written up in many national publications including The Boston Globe, USA Today, Gourmet Magazine, Sunset, and named by the food editor of the Wall Street Journal as the best $2 hamburger in America), upscale dining and bistros, a community college with art fairs and performing arts, seaplane tours, cruise boats for sightseeing or supper cruises, parasailing, windsurfing, jet ski and boat rental, guided fishing, a micro brewery, and the world-famous Coeur d'Alene Resort. The Rotary tennis courts and the public library are 8 blocks.
A beautiful,immaculately-maintained public golf course is 3 miles and several nationally acclaimed courses are within an easy drive. In winter, the Resort sponsors heart-warming Holiday activities. Snow skiing is just a 25 mile ride up I-90 to the base of the world's longest gondola which takes you to the top of Silver Mountain. Schweitzer Basin is roughly 56 miles north off Highway 95.
