The Cave House at Kula Kai is a premium quality vacation rental. More details are at the website cavehouse.us. This 1980 square foot vacation rental is in Kula Kai View Estates, which is a gated community near Ocean View and Naalehu, in Ka'u District of Hawaii County (Big Island). It is not in the Ocean View sub-division.
The Cave House features a spacious (30 by 33 ft) great room with an 18 foot high vaulted ceiling. It gives an open feeling to match the view from the windows into nature’s sunken garden, a lua* or puka with four cave entrances in front of the house. The cave entrances are visible from the front porch and the ocean can be seen through the trees. The Cave House is on a three acre wooded lot, with a dry land forest of ancient Ohia trees, pahoehoe lava, pukas, and a few orchids. One enters this lot by driving over a natural bridge between the two large luas or pukas.
Visitors have a panoramic view of the puka and cave entrances in a natural sunken garden from the chairs in the shade of front porch. The front porch runs the sixty foot width of the house and is seven feet deep, and red volcanic cinder forms a large patio roughly level with the porch to the edge of the puka. A spectacular view of the coast line is available from the back of the lot or on Kona Kai Boulevard several blocks south of the Cave House. The dining area is at the rear of the great room that flows into the fully equipped, modern kitchen. The utility room has a large capacity front loading washer and dryer, and both baths have walk-in showers and comfort height toilets. There are no steps in the house and the volcanic red cinder has been placed around the house to provide a level, low step access to all entrances. All doors are 36 inches, allowing for easy access.
Each of the three bedrooms has a ceiling fan and a king-size adjustable air bed. These are similar to the sleep number beds that are widely advertised, only better. Each bed has two adjustable chambers, so the firmness can be adjusted over a range of 50 levels to perfectly match each person's comfort level. All beds have pillow tops. If you still sleep on an innerspring mattress you may not want to go back to it after a week sleeping on this air bed at the Cave House at Kula Kai.
A high definition Direct TV is in the great room and several rooms are wired for internet and phone service. You may use the desktop computer in the house or your laptop to connect to broadband service. A landline phone is provided in the house. Long distance calls are charged. To make reservations call.
This is one of the most southern places you can stay and still be in the USA. A quiet place to enjoy nature, the Cave House is suitable for small or large families or groups of friends. The house is nestled southeast of a finger of lava which provides a natural barrier that protects the garden-like kipuka from high winds. A short distance over this lava ridge is a panoramic view of the southern coast, from the windmills near South Point, up the coast, past Manuka State Park. The ocean can be seen from the cave house; however, spectacular panoramic ocean vistas are only a few blocks makai from the house.
This is an ideal location for conveniently exploring both sides of the Island in easy one day drives, and an ideal central location to access some of the three secluded beaches - white sand, black sand, and green sand along the southern coast. The Cave House is only a 3 minute drive to the village of Ocean View, with its stores and services, two restaurants, gas station, shopping area, grocery store and hardware store, etc. Two of the most affordable 18-hole golf courses in all the Islands (Sea Mountain at Punaluu and Discovery Harbor in Naalehu) are a modest driving distance.
We are a SquareTrade Seal Member in good standing.

Why the Owner Chose Ocean View
We built the Cave House at Kula Kai for the Aesthetics. It is a spacious and modern house with all new furnishings and appliances throughout.
The cave house overlooks a large lua or puka; it is nature’s sunken garden. There are four cave entrances visible from the front porch. The driveway crosses a natural bridge, Arch Cave.
Hawaii Volcano National Park is only a 45 mile drive from the Cave House. Orchids grow wild in Ka’u and one is in the field behind the house. You can see South Point and fourteen wind mills from Kula Kai. The White, Black, and Green Sand beaches are in the South Point vicinity.

Every person who has been a guest in the Cave House at Kula Kai has had a wonderful experience and a strong endorsement. All guests who have stayed at the Cave House since it was completed in June 2008 are listed below. Contact information for each person is available upon request. January 2009 John: You have a great house here. Amazing might be a better word. Peter Lenahan, Tuckahoe, NY, USA December 2008 Here, on the Big Island, everything is going well and your house is really perfect. A lot of room!!! We have been very welcome by Kathlyn who is very efficient and helpful. We spent three weeks in the "cave house" and found this is almost a "too beautiful house" for cavers... Everything is perfect and with a lot of space for everybody! Caving with a "base camp" like this one is surely the key for the success and for discovering many miles of new underground passages. Even from your bed you can see the entrance of a lava tube...And sun is better than snow and ice during winter time...Aloha and Mahalo Gérald and Rosemarie Favre Route de Crassier, Borex, Switzerland August 2008 The Cave House is terrific and we have been having a great time-it is hard to leave the house in the morning for our expeditions! Also, the package was waiting for us in good order. Many thanks to Kathlyn for receiving it for us (it is an underwater housing for my video camera that I snagged for a great price on ebay after we left the mainland). Thank you very much for the extension of departure time! This will make our departure much better. We'll be out at 5:00 pm. It has been a great time. You have a wonderful house.
