What an amazing experience. I was looking for technology detox and to relax after the first four months of middle school teaching and I got even more than I expected. The owner was such a pleasure to deal with and the accommodations were cozy and inviting. The house is set away in the woods, but with an amazing backyard view of the mountains. It is very accessible to all the necessities - homemade food, hiking trails, and clean air. The house had two woodburning stoves - one in the dowsnstairs bedroom, and one upstairs in the living area. I loved the loft bed and the skylight windows that either showed off the amazing night sky or got snow covered after a typical Vermont storm. The driveway was plowed for us without having to make a call and the highways are always cleared. Take advantage of all the surrounding towns with the antique stores, homemade pies, and the snowshoeing trails. I highly recommend this property to anyone looking to just get away!

My girlfriend and I were looking to go skiing in Vermont between the Christmas and New Years 2011 holidays. We began looking into homes off the beaten path in Vermont where we could relax; which still has access to major ski resorts without the hassle of the tourist traps. This house is exactly what we were looking for, it was cozy and perfect romantic getaway for the two of us. Stratton and Mount Snow are within a 45 minute scenic drive and Brattleboro is ~10 miles. Ricks tavern is a close watering hole which we frequented after a long day on the mountain. Overall if you want to get away from the city life, this is a perfect location. Thanks for renting your beautiful home to us Jim; we hope to stay again sometime soon!

It happens that Hurricane Irene chose to visit Southern Vermont just before us. The owner kept us apprised of road conditions around the home and in Brattleboro proper. Except for a minor detour on Rte 30, our vacation was not affected by the storm. We walked into the cabin and right away I could see that it was sparkling clean. The master bedroom and bath are on the ground level which meant I could read in bed while hubby watched movies two flights up in the loft. The main room/kitchen is where we spent most of our time. There is a pretty glass door at the top of the stairs so I could listen to NPR through my laptop and and make breakfast while hubby slept in. A bonus was a full bath right off the kitchen. Because I have arthritis, I was happy not to have to go up and down the steps to use the other bathroom and the tub was a good size too. There is a full washer/dryer set right off the master. Because we swam a few times in a pool in town, it was very convenient to be able to clean our suits and towels. As I sat in the big chair in the main room I saw a turkey! He scooted away before I could get a picture. We spent one rainy day strolling around Brattleboro. Talking to the owner of A Mystery Book Shop, we found out he had lived near us for years. I managed not to buy yarn in Knit or Dye, but did get a shawl pin for a project. Tucked away below the knit shop was a tea emporium where I splurged on some bulk tea for the grand price of $2.50 I keep picturing the wood stoves (there are two!) in the house. I did not get a chance to sit in the window seat in the master bedroom suite. I am imagining myself sitting there, knitting with a steaming mug of tea nearby along with my camera and watching the flickering flames in the woodstove.... Yes we will be back!

You won't be disappointed! The view is amazing and sitting in front of the wood stove, with the view as your backdrop is even more amazing. Truly a great house and the owner is wonderful to work with. There are many great restaurants in Brattleboro (Mocha Joes and Fireworks, to name a couple) and Newfane (Rick's Tavern)- the Grafton Cheese Factory is a must-- plus the ride to Stratton is an easy, scenic 25 minutes. Highly recommended! We hope to visit again soon!

My wife (girlfriend at the time) and I spent Valentine's/President's Day weekend here and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We spent most of the time in the living room enjoying the warmth and ambiance of the wood stove, the beautiful views of the valley and each other's company. I'd love to own a place like this for myself one day.

The house is beautiful and cozy. Wood burning stoves were tremendous, we used them every night - we were able to keep the heat very low during our stay, if it even kicked on. We stayed upstairs in the loft, it gets very warm when the stove is going, so open the skylight or window to allow for some circulation (there's also an exhaust fan, just in case). There was also plenty of room for us - two couples - and I imagine if you threw in a few kids it would be fine. The kitchen (my domain), while it looks small, has almost everything you need. My only request would be some more bakeware - such as a medium and/or large casserole. I brought up aluminum tins which worked fine, so if you want to make lasagna, ziti, etc, be prepared (I may have left some tins behind so look around first). Everything else is covered. Including a washer and dryer downstairs - life savers! The Newfane/Brattleboro area is great, friendly and everything you need within 20 minutes, skiing is about 30 to 45 minutes away (unless Maple Valley ever reopens), but not a bad drive. If you want to rent a movie, go to the Hannaford in Brattleboro and use their Redbox or closer is the Newfane Market, there is a decent selection of some newer and also some classic movies. Prices at the Brattleboro movie theater are fantastic too - $6.00 a ticket (it's twice that here)! Brattleboro has a lot to offer, restaurants, bars, bookstores, a museum, and other random shops, so take a day and check it out. There are two covered bridges in the immediate area and countless opportunities to snap some great pics. I also imagine that the hiking is great, but I'm too lazy for that, so you'll just have to discover that on your own =0P Kinda bummed we won't be heading up this weekend...
Owner response:Thanks so much for the kind words and the glowing report. I'm so pleased the property was right for you. Thanks too for your suggestion about the bakeware. It takes someone who really likes preparing food a certain way to make some things clear. I'm grateful. I hope you will come back again!

My husband and I stayed here for a weekend while rafting the West River with Crab Apple. The cabin was cozy, clean and comfortable with a cute view of an adjacent mountain and field. We woke up to loons the first morning. Would have preferred some blinds on the master bedroom downstairs, since it was closest to the road and the place where you need more privacy, but other than that, wonderful!
Owner response:Thanks for your kind words, and I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. Because the property is secluded, the lack of blinds has not seemed to be a problem previously. But ANYONE being uncomfortable that way is one too many. I've already taken care of the issue. There are now blinds in the bay window as well as on the French glider! Come back and see sometime!

This home was amazing. I went there with 2 others for a short 3 day weekend and we had a great time. The house itself is amazing not including the wonderful view from the backyard. It had everything we needed and more. The skylights, all over the house, were amazing. We must have had them opened the whole time. The house was clean and well kept and I thought the best part was the book on the table where everyone who ever stayed in the house got to sign. It was great to see the wonderful times people spent. We read the whole book! I would recommend this home to anyone looking for a good time or just a relaxing time. Also, Jim, the owner of the home, was very polite and helped us any way he could. Thank you so much! We will be coming back soon for another visit! -Kristin
