You might prefer to stroll the charming shops and eateries right here in Saluda, or spend your days hiking here at Dark Corner or DuPont Forest or one of many other local outdoor recreational areas. From here, you are minutes from excellent kayaking, hiking, biking, fishing, and golf as well as shopping, antiques, excellent live theater, art galleries, historical sites dating back to the Revolutionary War, and many museums and folk artisans. The first Bear's Den was originally home to my husband Carl's grandparents. Those of you who have already stayed with us here at Cottages of Dark Corner have seen the place, much loved but long abandoned on the mountainside between the Pout House and Cynthia's Peak. We were able to save the Pout House, but the old Bear's Den was beyond our help, so we took it down to make way for a new Bear's Den.
Many years ago, the cottage was named for its original occupant, TR Baumgartner, who was known in the family as 'a grouchy old bear.' A wooden plaque naming the house was made for him sometime (we think) in the 1960's and will find an honored place in this new home. Visit our website to learn more about our history here.

The owners were EXTREMELY EASY to deal with, directions were exact, location is PERFECT to go anywhere in the area, house is in GREAT condition! We travel a lot and have rented numerous cabins and homes ~ this one met all of our expectations and has FANTASTIC SCENERY! We weren't there long enough to use the hot tub on the deck but, we hope to return at some point and get use of it then! You won't be disappointed, I'm very particular!

Spent a weekend with my wife and dogs. It was very secluded and relaxing, we had a great time. There were trails for dogs to walk. Everything provided except food and clothing. Beautiful view of mountains from the deck, wish the leaves were turning, it would have made the view even better. Hot tub on deck as well as wireless internet and DVD player.

I'm sorry we didn't get to meet. We all enjoyed everything. Lots of nice room and the deck and hot tub were wonderful. We so enjoyed watching the trees turning greener over the valley every day. Also--thanks for Cinderella! We were all missing our pets so it was a pleasure to have her stop by everyday and visit. Vivian and Family
