This property was perfect for our family getaway. Lots of room, tastefully decorated and the most comfortable beds we have ever slept on. It was in walking distance to the beach, park and shopping. Quiet streets and friendly neighborhood were perfect for children to ride bikes. The owner responded quickly to all our questions.

Our family had such a wonderful time in this spacious and pristine rental. The owner is generous and flexible, and makes you feel as if you're staying with an old friend. The house has marvelous architectural appeal, and the little nooks and anterooms give you a place to hide with a book, or a quiet spot for a child to take a mid-day nap. For such an old and special home, it is a welcoming place for children - parents can enjoy themselves and relax. All in all, a memorable (and hopefully repeatable) visit. Cape Charles is a charming, quiet place where everyone seems friendly, and the little shops are definitely worth a look. Thanks for everything, Mary Ann!

The Kellogg House was a lovely place to relax and enjoy peaceful, low-key Cape Charles. Family meals were enjoyable utilizing the well-appointed kitchen and beautiful linens in the dining room. There were fresh herbs for cooking and flowers for the table in the yard. The in-house ping pong table and nearby tennis court were great diversions and the library was only two blocks away for Internet access or to check out a DVD or book (honor system for summer visitors!). The big decision every day was whether to ride bikes or take the golf cart to the coffee house and the beach. Thanks for sharing the Kellogg House with us - it was a great place to unwind and enjoy time with family.
Owner response:Thank you so much for your kind review. It gives us great pleasure to have our house enjoyed by others.

An un-appointed beach rental

This is the opposite of a well appointed comfy beach rental. There are beach chairs and a grill, but no games, no books, and a kitchen that has seen better days - case in point the moldy bamboo stick that serves as a barrier between the sink and the backsplash. There is no internet access (even though the listing claims there is). There is one small TV on the first floor with a limited number of channels (mostly sports) and while the house sleeps 8 there is only seating for 4 in the dining room. The home lists four bedrooms but really has three since the “fourth” sports a VERY lumpy pull out mattress – without sheets. The home has character but should really be described as a starkly furnished museum. The owner still lives on the open third floor but vacates while you are there. The only indication that you are not to disturb ANYTHING on the third floor is a two sentence note on the fridge…. There is no question that the owner considers this to be her home and not your rental home….normal wear and tear items, like a stain on a towel, will be deducted from your security deposit.
Owner response: You are entirely correct; the Kellogg House is not the usual beach cottage. It is an 80 year old home, which is listed on the national register of historic places. The house is filled with fine art, linens, and antiques. It has been restored to its original intention with hardwood floors, plaster walls, crown moldings, chandeliers and sconces from the 1920’s. The kitchen does have old cabinets, counter tops and sink, but all new appliances and gourmet utensils. The dining room has a 2 layered glass table which pulls out to seat 8. We hope renters would respect the contents of the house and want them to enjoy time with their family instead of on the internet or in front of a big screen TV. (There is no internet access at the house, but it is available at the coffee shop, pub, restaurants and library in Cape Charles). Cleaning fish at the kitchen sink and spraying fish scales across the wall, dog hairs throughout the house (dogs are not allowed, although the renter informed me they had kenneled their dogs and that the dog hairs were from her daughter’s suitcase), exceeding the maximum occupancy of 8 (the contract clearly states this), sleeping in my personal space when they told me they did not, (the contract also explains the private space on the third floor) and permanently staining our 800 gram towels had me deduct 90$ from their security deposit – 2 hours extra cleaning and 2 stained towels)

This is a wonderful place to stay! A beautiful, gracious historic home, with plenty of room for large families. House is equipped with everything you will need. Cape Charles is a lovely town, with tree-lined streets, beautiful turn of the century homes, and a wonderful neighborhood atmosphere. Beach is great for children and very uncrowded. Everything – beach, restaurants, stores – is within an enjoyable ten minute stroll from Kellogg house, or if you want to drive, there is plenty of easy parking everywhere. We had a very enjoyable week and will be back!

Dear Mary Ann: Now that we are back in New York and settled back into our routine a bit, I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Kellogg House. It is an architectural gem. You have obviously performed a great deal of work, yet left the original details of the house intact. It was our second stay in Cape Charles and our best to date. I certainly plan on returning to Cape Charles again in the future sometime.

The Kellogg House was the perfect Home Away from Home for our Family Reunion in Cape Charles! We had lots of room to spread out and enjoy our family gatherings. What a beautiful, clean and spacious home to make wonderful memories with family. And, Cape Charles is a step back in time where everyone has a quick smile and hearty hello as you bike or stroll through town or at the beach. We will be back!
