Located in the cool pines of Northern Arizona, We are near Grand Canyon, Grand Canyon Railway, Bearizona, Sedona, Oak Creek, Montezuma's Castle & Cliff Castle Casino. The Petrified Forest & Painted desert is about a 2 hour drive. Ideal for family retreats, a couple's romantic week-end, or hunters who don't want to sleep on the ground. It's all set up for you.
Our cabins are about 100 years old with plenty of rustic character. We can offer a soothing atmosphere not provided in the city limits. We are in Parks, Az. which is 1/2 way between Flagstaff & Williams.
Quite often we see elk in the early evening summer days, so we walk quietly & watch for them. You will be in awe looking at the clear night skies, the scent of fresh air, & the far away sound of frogs in a pond. So many things the busy city hotels can't offer or sell. Please take time to hear the sound of silence on a clear moonlit sky.
About the Bunk House: You will enjoy this quiet, peaceful old shot gun cabin we call 'The Bunk House' Built in the early 1900's out of railroad ties milled in Flagstaff, it is now a refreshing escape from today's fast pace. While making it comfortable for our guests we have also preserved the rugged atmosphere. A stay in this rustic old cabin is a great way to enhance your Arizona experience. We have been here since 1984 but didn't convert the Bunk House into a vacation cabin until 2008. We simply put our family heirlooms in there for decor. It will take you back in time. We are so far out in the country that we have to haul our water from a local well. The clean air & quiet atmosphere makes it worth it. (yes we do have running, hot water for your convenience ) But please conserve given that our 'well' is a truck. In addition to The Bunk House, for larger groups we have opened up 'Roger's Cabin' as a spare bedroom. It has a queen bed & bathroom. A stones throw from the Bunk House.
About the area: We are fortunate enough to have national forest on the north & east side of our property. In the summer there is usually a herd of elk that come in to graze, it's an awesome sight . We are about an hour from the Grand Canyon & about 90 min. from the Petrified Forest. We are located in a central spot for a lot of northern Arizona sights. In Flagstaff is the Lowell Observatory & Northern Arizona Museum. Sedona & Oak Creek Canyon is about a 45 min. drive. The Bunk House is not 100% isolated, a cabin like that is hard to find. But it's out in the country.
We love to share our state with you so please feel free to ask any questions about any sites in the area. We live on site & love having the world come to us by way of our many versatile guests.
If you are lucky enough to spot a small herd of elk across the fence, please don't chase after them. Believe it or not we've had that happen & they spooked so bad that we didn't see them for the rest of the summer. Move as little as possible & they will hang around to graze.
Call for any questions you might have about the area or the Bunk House.

It's about 300 ft away. Our king and queen beds have memory foam 2' pads on them, super comfy....moreless
Bathrooms: 1 Bathroom
- The Bunk House has a convection oven, slow cooker, waffle maker, coffee maker & microwave. There are some cast iron skillets, pans and microwaveable casserole dishes. However there is no actual stove. We furnish a vacuum and a few cleaning supplies for your convenience. We also provide real dishes if you prefer them over paper & plastic. There is a picnic table out side for your use. You might want to bring an old sheet or a table clothe to sit on & cover the table because it sits under a large pine tree which drips sap & pitch. Also, while the shade is nice for your car you won't like the 'by-products' of a large ponderosa in the warm summer months. Both cabins are heated with electricity & cooled with an open window. At 7,200 ft we've never needed a cooler. Kaibab forest is on the north & east sides of our property so you don't have to drive to get into the forest....moreless

We are north of Interstate 40 off if exit 178. Not in any city limits, it's quiet & easy to find. It’s best to use the directions that are sent to you.
Hunting area 7 west. Elk, deer & wild turkey.
Going west on Interstate 40/Route 66 take exit 178. Go right ( north ) to the 'T' in the road and turn left ( west)
You will then be on an original section of Old Route 66. There is a historic country store on the corner of Old 66 & Spring Valley Rd. You will turn right (north) there. Not far up the road on the right ( east) is the Bunk House. Parks is more of an 'area' than a town with a population of less than 1,000 people.
If you use a GPS be sure to put our town & zip code FIRST then the address
If no it will take you to EAST Springvalley Rd.
Other Activities: Grand Canyon, Grand Canyon Railway & Bearizona. In Flagstaff there is N. Ariz Museum & the Riordan Mansion. (especially during the holidays. They try to re-create the exact way the Riordan family decorated)
Ski: We are about a one hour drive to Snowbowl which is located north of Flagstaff. We are west. So to get to Snowbowl from here you would go back into Flagstaff and then go north up to the ski lodge. Be safe on your drive. The road from Flagstaff up to Snowbowl is a narrow road shaded by pine trees quite often the snow/ice on the road doesn't melt. There are several housing districts there so the traffic can get busy.
The 'Local Services & Attractions' that are listed are in Flagstaff or Williams. A We are in the middle.
A drive up Spring Valley rd. will take you into some open & very beautiful country. We often see deer & elk when driving all the back roads. A lava tube is near & anasazi pictographs.
The beautiful red rocks of Sedona & Oak Creek Canyon is not far to the south east.
Grand Canyon Cafe & Red Raven in Williams & LaFonda for Mexican Food in Flagstaff are our favorites. But there are many many privately owned places to eat in Williams.
Year Purchased: 1983
About the owner: They met for the first time in 1962 when Andy came to her parents home to pick up older sister, Renee, for the prom. Shortly after that they began casually, secretly dating & cruising the streets of Route 66 in Holbrook, Az. in Andy's hot rod Ford truck. 'Secretly dating' because they shared a common story as with so many young girls and 'parental intervention.' A young man being just a few years too old & a little too wild, a little too 'Andy' so thought her parents. So giving up the fight, they went their separate ways in 1966 but always keeping an eye or ear open as to the where abouts of the other. In 1997 Andy decided to go on a search & rescue mission. He found her [ through information given by that same older sister] right here in Parks, only 100 miles from their home town, Holbrook, in this log cabin where she had lived since 1983. Both of them being raised in the culture of Route 66, & in small town USA, this little spot in the Kaibab forest fit like an old boot. They married in Dec 1997. In 2007 Andy retired from Salt River Project as a plant mechanic. Linda worked in respiratory & self employed as a paramed for Life Ins. Since retirement they have been able to live in Parks year around. BTW, they had the privilege of having her Mother live in their home for a brief period until her passing in 2002. She dearly loved & repeatedly apologized to Andy for the way she & Linda's dad had treated him.
Why the Owner Chose Flagstaff:
They have never lived in the city, so being out in the country suits them. These old cabins that were fixer uppers in the beginning was a fun project for Andy & Linda. A quote from Linda's dad 'Linda, please don't move out here' But a few years later he loved it just as much as she did. Andy said it was 'home' from the first time he walked in the door. (1997) This piece of heaven has been home for several horses. Chief was the last and is missed. He's gone to a home where he can be used as a pleasure horse. They could saddle up, open a gate and ride as long as they wanted without having to trailer them out. They don't know all of the history of the first 83 years of these old cabins, but Linda does know the last 30 years with all of the trials of snow, freezing water pipes & driving her own water in a truck which she didn't think she could handle. But the beauty of the winters & summers have always been worth it. They would do it over again, without a doubt. Never guessing in her wildest dreams that one day she would share the rest of my life with Andy out here in one of her cabins.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
"The age & area here attracted me. The first time I walked into the main cabin I was in love. You can't buy or create 'old' & this much history." It's centrally located for almost everything in this area you would want to visit. We are about an hour from the Grand Canyon, Sedona, & SnowBowel. And only 13miles to Bearizona, & historic downtown Williams Flagstaff with all of the festivities & restaurants is only about 25 min. The pine trees are so tall & thick you can 'barely see the forest for the trees' They have a fire pit or fire ring in front of all 3 cabins. Mother nature provides wood just across the fence for the out door fires. In the reviews 'quiet' and 'peaceful' seem to be the general consensus. That's what it is to the Picketts
