Accommodations:  House, 2 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)

Keywords:  House

The location of this private home in the small fishing village of Esperanza provides access to beaches, restaurants, local groceries, produce markets, kayak/snorkel rental shops, clothing and gift stores. The neighborhood is a mixture of local residents and renters. The homes are painted in a rainbow of colors; flowering bushes and trees abound. Magnolia House is cooled inside by ceiling fans and air conditioning. The house has been extensively rebuilt, replacing and enlarging the original structure to incorporate high ceilings, lots of windows, new appliances in the kitchen and an all new bathroom. The front patio is an excellent spot for morning coffee and afternoon cocktails.

There are two, comfortably-sized bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a pair of twin beds. The bathroom has a large, walk-in, tiled shower.

Whether you choose to swim, snorkel, eat out, cook in, tour the bioluminescent bay or read a book, you'll have a comfortable home base. In addition, you'll have the knowledgeable assistance of my caretakers who will meet you at the ferry or airport, if you wish.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2004

As a retired school teacher with a love of reading, traveling and swimming, Vieques appeals to my sense of adventure. I've been a tourist in many places in the world, but I love actually having real estate to make me feel rooted and to give me a sense of belonging. It creates a balance between the "foreign" and the familiar.

Why the Owner Chose Esperanza

I chose Vieques because it's an island in the Caribbean!!!!

The Unique Benefits of this House

Magnolia House is private, yet part of a neighborhood that is vibrant. It's where real people live, people who get up in the morning, send their children to school and go to work. The beaches are exquisite and Esperanza is a village hosting world travelers while maintaining its own character.

We had a wonderful time staying at this well taken care of property. Excellent communication with the owner and property managers prior to travel. A great welcoming orientation from her property manager made us really feel at home, and his recommendations were spot-on for food and activities. Esperanza is a small and very welcoming town, and a much better base of operations for hitting the best beaches, diving, and snorkeling than the other town on Vieques (Isabel Segunda). Having a rental car (Jeep) is a plus, but basing yourself in Esperanza, you could get by without one (we rented for 48hrs out of our 5 day stay). The property is lovely - clean and very airy with louvered windows to let the trade winds pass through, the patio out front is a lovely spot for breakfast in the morning, or a few drinks in the afternoon. The pictures are accurate, but it has even more charm in person. The area is an established local neighborhood, with a sprinkling of snowbirds, gringos, and vacation rental, but by and large a vibrant native community. The area feels like a real community, a little rough/rustic in appearance, but very safe. Our property manager was apologetic in advance about the noise that goes along with that (roosters, dogs, and passing cars blasting bachata music), but it didn't bother us at all. All part of the charm - you know you're "not in Kansas (or wherever) any more". Just roll with it. Plenty of places to eat on the Malecon (the main drag, along the seafront) which is a comfortable stroll. There's also a convenience/small grocery store within walking distance, and many of the island's activities are based out of Esperanza (horseback riding, Bioluminescent Bay tours, mountain bike rentals, snorkeling by boat - the first two activities are not to be missed!). Lots to do, but also a wonderful setting to not do much. The property doesn't have TV or internet - but this is actually a huge plus! You can't help but be THERE. Bring a good book, or enjoy some of the owner's excellent collection. We fell in love with Vieques and can't wait to go back. Our favorites: Bio Bay tour with VAC (clear bottom kayaks - amazing!), Esperanza Riding Company (fantastic 3hr tour of the area, great views). Bili Restaurant - local flavors, excellent food, fair pricing. Bananas - generic American/Carribean, but done well, and cheap. Favorite beach: La Chiva (Blue Beach) - stop at the Los Colombianos food truck on the way, warm friendly people, amazing food and cheap.

Owner response:Thank you, Nick and Nathalie, for your appreciative review of Vieques, Esperanza and Magnolia House. I too want to tip my hat to my caretakers who make my guests feel so welcome and at ease on the island.
