After four years of restoration, The Tenant House at Shady Spring Farm has recently been made available for guests to enjoy. Step back in time in this charming 1880s home located on Shady Spring Farm, a family-operated Black Angus cattle farm. Originally built in the 1880s for the resident tenant farmer and his family, this home has been lovingly restored to the 1930s era. Enjoy cooking breakfast in the farmhouse kitchen, home to an original 1935 monitor top refrigerator and a 1911 cast iron and chrome electric range on cabriole legs. The oak-cabinet telephone with hand-held receiver and brass bells is available for local and long distance calls.
Relax, read a book, or visit with friends while sitting in oak rocking chairs on the broad front porch. The enclosed back porch overlooks a meadow and pasture area and has seating for two - a great place to read in the morning or sip a cup of tea while taking in the beautiful scenery of the Great Cove valley.
Each of the three bedrooms has a double bed and is decorated with antiques. Crisp line-dried linens will be provided when weather permits, and high-loft goose-down comforters will be available on chilly winter nights. The bathroom with a mahogany sink base and French waterspout faucet has a full size bathtub and shower.
We invite you to stroll the grounds, explore the farm's 130 acres, and enjoy the fresh country air. Walk our private lane or make use of the two picnic areas on the farm. Ask to feed the dozens of golden trout that call our limestone springhouse and spring waters home. A romantic retreat or great vacation get-away, The Tenant House at Shady Spring Farm awaits you and your family. Come and enjoy.

Charming Farmhouse Just 30 Minutes to Whitetail Ski Resort
Year Purchased: 2004
Why the Owner Chose McConnellsburg
While growing up Tony spent his summers here "helping" to tend the cows, the chickens and the sheep. After 63 years of farming Tony's grandparents were thinking of retiring. Tony and I were looking to purchase a historical property near Gettysburg - our favorite weekend getaway. The timing couldn't have been better, his grandparents didn't want the farm to be developed and our goal was to restore an old property. One year later we signed the paperwork and purchased the family farm that has been in Tony's family since 1922.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Shady Spring Farm feels far removed from the busy I-95 corridor where we travel to our jobs. While it sounds a bit cliche, life on the farm slows down. Every season brings new sights and new scents. Early spring brings daffodils and crocus. April into May is calving season when 80 or so black angus calves are born. May is the first cutting of hay and the blooming of tiger lilies around the springhouse. The warm nights in June are lit with thousands of fireflies. This past July brought our first bald eagle to the farm - it soared over the field behind the farmhouse for nearly an hour. August is lazy, it seems even the trout in the springhouse take it easy. Every season brings it's own wonder. When Tony wants to play a little golf he heads to the Great Cove Golf Course, just two miles from the farm. Whitetail Ski Resort (with snow tubing!) and historic Berkeley Springs, WV are within 30 minutes. East Broad Top Railroad offers rides on restored steam engines, and one can enjoy a trolley ride at the Old Tyme Trolley Museum nearby. When in a mood for outlet shopping we have two choices within an hour - Prime Outlets in Hagerstown MD and the outlet center in Gettysburg, PA.
Owner's Map of McConnellsburg
While on the farm there are endless things to do... repairing and maintaining buildings, upkeeping fences and keeping the grass and weeds in check. We're kept company by our three dogs, Otis, Max and Felix; the latter two are fantastic little rescue dogs who absolutely love having the run of the farm. When there is a little spare time we enjoy riding our horses, two of whom are rescues as well. The farm is a treasure, and we are compelled to share it with others. Hence, The Tenant House was born.

The Tenant House at Shady Spring Farm was absolutely marvelous! Myself and other friends (all young professionals) spent the weekend enjoying walks outside, drinking coffee sitting in rocking chairs on the porch and watching movies from a pretty eclectic DVD collection. The Tenant House was incredibly clean and great fun to stay at! The antique appliances and furniture transport you back to another time! The house has been beautifully renovated, the entire house is incredibly cozy and all the bedrooms offer beautiful views out onto the farm. Barb and Tony were so fantastic to work with - promptly responding to our inquiry, emailing with us and providing directions to the property. I would pick the Tenant House again and again for any stay. We traveled to nearby Berkeley Springs for an afternoon visiting antique shops and getting drinks at a charming bed and breakfast. Definitely stay at Shady Spring Farm - it makes for a great getaway!
Owner response:Thank you Alissa and Andrew - working with you to ensure your friends would enjoy their holiday together was a pleasure. It's great to hear that you enjoyed the farm as well as the surrounding area & that the Tenant House worked perfectly as a meeting point between Pittsburgh and DC! It was very kind of you to leave the Holiday treats. :)

We spent two wonderful nights at the Tenant house after a week at Disney World. The peaceful farm was exactly what we needed after all the crowds and craziness. Barb and Tony took care of every detail to make our stay perfect including offering a Christmas Tree package that was perfect and beautiful. The house itself is warm and charming and half the fun is discovering all the details they have put into the restoration. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a stay at the Tenant House!
Owner response:Working with Wendy to create the perfect Christmas surprise for her family, and in particular her daughter Natalie, was so much fun. Knowing that our guests are able to slow down and enjoy their time together while being here on the farm is so rewarding. Thanks to Wendy and her family for being such enjoyable guests.

The simple, unassuming exterior of this house does not prepare you for the welcoming atmosphere felt immediately upon entering. It is a very special house. Immaculately clean, the care and attention to detail that was used in restoration is very evident. It is so pleasant being in the house it is difficult to leave to enjoy the many activities and sights in the area. The house is surrounded by farmland with various animals; sheep, cattle, horses etc. Walking the lane on the property, which offers incredible panoramic views of pastoral beauty, provokes a delightful sense of relaxation and peaceful quiet. I find myself returning again and again and each time is better than the last.

Home is beautiful! I surprised my wife with a weekend stay for our 24th anniversary. She just loved the house and all it's furnishings, etc. Very quiet area, it was so peaceful sitting on the porch in the morning and the evening. We are both very busy and we needed a place to just get away from it all. This was the perfect place for a quiet weekend of pure relaxation! Thanks you!!!

We had a very relaxing weekend! Your farmhouse is ideally situated halfway between Muncy PA and Charlottesville VA. We are very thankful that such an inviting place is so well located. We had fun with the antique appliances, feeding the fish, walking in the woods, and generally just relaxing. We can't wait to come back!

The farmhouse is absolutely gorgeous: everything was renovated beautifully and feels old-fashioned without being at all fussy. The grounds are also lovely: the farm is set in a fairly high mountain valley, across a road from another small farm with grazing sheep, and feels deeply peaceful. The house was sparkling clean and well-appointed when we visited, which made for a wonderfully relaxing weekend. I only wish we could have stayed longer.
