Dear Suzy, Bill, Marco, Wendy & Daniella, Our Gang could not have been happier with our stay at your amazing villa. It was a 50th B-Day extravaganza that exceeded our expetations at every turn. From the fabulous cooking class at Perbacco to the VIP treatment in Deruta... from the incomarable charm of Simone...to the extraordinary tour of Assisi (who new that the best thing about Assisi was the view of Perugia?...just ask Francesco!) We are extremely grateful for the great care that we received everywhere we went. And, even more for knowing that we could count on Aldo to take us safely and quickly to the next stop on our Umbrian adventure. It has truly been the trip of a lifetime. Suzy & Bill, I really appreciate the use of your lovely villa & the chance to explore Umbria! What a beautiful country! Maybe in a few years, Stuart & I can come here again! I do not think he has ever been to Spain. Aldo was great as our taxi-driver - he was very patient with all our requests! Marco & Wendy were great - much appreciation to Wendy for all the work she did with arranging the tour trip to Florence, etc. I will be recommending this place to my co-workers at the hospital for future vacations. Tarie & I had an amazing journey from the culture & energy of Rome, thru the romance of PErugia, we thought this one was for the record books of vacations. Then we entered Cannara... and the warmth of your agritourismo! The environment is so charming & picturesque- how could we not have a joyful time? Karen gave the template, Daniella, Marco and most gratefully - Wendy! "Brava, Bravo & PREGO"! I must admit, the group was AMAZING, from the first moments, everyone became family. We had a fabulous time! The food and wine were terrific!! Bill and Suzy were wonderful hosts. They were kind and generous... they were attentive to our every need. Everything was perfect. Seeing Umbria from a photographer's perspective is looking for the details that make Umbria memorable. The worshop enables a person to appreciate the details by minimizing the work of identifying and traveling to interesting locations. The worshop also enables a person to concentrate on photography by orienting him/her to each look with a tour, then giving the person time to explore and find scenes of interest. The great 20th century Italian-American philosopher, Yogi Berra, summarized the art and craft of photography thusly: "You can observe a lot just by looking". This worshop enables a person, regardless of their level of photographic skill, to observe a lot. And eat a lot, too. Personal note: I had been away from photography for several years before taking this worshop. Working with a group of talented photographers helped me to re-learn techniques that I had forgotten. Enjoy the experience. And don't forget to feed the cats, regardless of what Marco says. John K. 22 october 2010 - P.S. As a rank amateur, I feel I have learned a lot from Frank, Judy, & my classmates, for which I am grateful. I know what to look for & I have a greater appreciation for the daily tours. The only thing I would change is I might make Casteluccio its own trip or eliminate it from this trip - too long getting there & very little to see (even though I LOVE shooting animals). This has been a wonderful week for photography and adventure in hill towns and valley villages around Umbria. A great opportunity for photographers to experience the people and places of this very interesting region of Italy, its grand vistas and panoramas, and its quieter moments of friendship and charm. And I've enjoyed sharing the days with others whose images open the world wider and more beautifully. Umbria Photo Workshops at Fattoria del Gelso - Inaugural Trip October 16-23, 2010 (led by Frank V.R. & Judith G., www.GVRphoto.com) The idea for a week-long photo workshop in Umbria grew out our very first event for our new book, Serenissima: Venice in winter. The event was a Sunday afternoon book-signing in September at Bella Italia in Bethesda. Suzy and Bill graciously offered to host an event at their shop even before the book had arrived in the U.S. Over dinner after that 1st signing Suzy & Bill also offered us the use of the villa for type of photo workshop abroad that we had been thinking of for some time. The inaugural workshop this October was a success in huge measure because of Suzy & Bill's generosity, their beautiful home away from home, and a superb support staff that treated all of our students royally & pampered all of us with great food, great accomodations & a full & invigorating itinerary (moltissime grazie: Frances, Wendy, Marco, Daniela& Aldo). What a beautiful piece of heaven here on Earth! Our time here was restful, renewing and a wonderful chance to spend time with family and friends. The pool was the perfect place for all the young ones to unwind after a day tromping about the countryside. Of all the different homes we have stayed at around the world, Fattoria del Gelso is the best! Everything we needed is here - except cooler weather! Our classes of pizza & pasta making were great fun for the girls and hopefully we can replicate something similar at home. Thank you for your hospitality and beautiful home. Myself and 15 other family members have just returned from a fabulous vacation at La Fattoria Del Gelso. It was an ideal family trip in a most beautiful section of Umbria, Cannara. Wendy, Marco and Teresa made us feel right at home and we highly recommend at least one night of Teresa's superb Italian cooking.The location of La Fattoria is excellent for day trips to the many fascinating towns surrounding it. We especially enjoyed Deruta and Assisi. Some of us even travelled to Florence only a two hour drive. Truffle Hunting was a unique and fun experience for everyone. We can't say enough good things about our stay. La Fattoria was immaculate and inviting with plenty of room for all of us. We couldn't have picked a better place for our first trip to Italy.

Morning has broken, songbirds are singing, cats are meowing, It's another day in Cannara at your beautiful Fattoria del Gelso! "This is a day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it!" Unfortunately for us, it's also the day we must bid farewell. Our week here as been nothing shy of wonderful! Despite the rainy days and chilly temperatures, we have managed to experience the local flavor Cannara, Bevagna, Deruta, Gubbio, Montefalco, Spello and Todi. Some of us even managed to "climb" Mount Subasio, even if it was accidentally. And the tours of Perugia and Assisi with our guide Patrizia will be in our memories forever. Her knowledge of medieval history and the ministries and her story - telling skills brought to our minds vivid images of the Popes, St. Francis, St. Clair and the people of both towns. It was as though we were standing in the streets, watching it all happen. The many treasures of all the Churches we visited were breathtakingly beautiful with all their frescoes depicting the life of Jesus. The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli was very special. The regional food was so delicious; we especially enjoyed dinner at RediBis. Thanks for all your recommendations. But, our "welcome" dinner and "pizza night" at the villa were the most special. Your three jewels - Wendy, Marco and Teresa - treated us like family. They were so helpful in so many ways, we simply had nothing to worry about the entire week. Can a vacation be any better? Umbria is so beautiful- the scenery is spectacular in every direction. Thank you, Suzy and Bill, for allowing us to enjoy Fattoria del Gelso, while experiencing as much of Umbria as possible during our short stay. Cari Bill and Suzy - Grazie Mille :)! What a wonderful, relaxing holiday here... I highly recommend "rosato di Sagrantino" by the pool.... Teresa, Marco and of course, Wendy - were truly helpful and welcoming. The "rosè" marble in Assisi... lunch at Pardi con vino... wonderful memories... Cheers, Jeanne

The place is great - all of the people who work here are wonderful - and this is an excellent spot to explore a fascinating area. Outstanding!! This was our first visit to Umbria and it will not be our last. The villa is wonderful. I cannot say enough about Wendy, Marco & Theresa. They have made our stay here one that can never be forgotten. I have been talking to our daughter each night, describing in detail the wonderful treatment we have received. There are a group of us that travel together often. When I share my photos of the villa and the surrounding villages, I know that they will want to come here also. Sitting out by the pool at night, a light breeze, wonderful friends. What else can you ask for. The experience will forever be cherished. Thank you for your hospitality. "Ciao" Melvin & Helen R. Suzy & Bill, Wendy, Marco, Theresa, Thank you for a wonderful vacation with our dear friends Drew & Linda. I'm hoping that at some point we meet. We've had a glorious time relaxing and vacationing motoring around the countryside, visiting the hilltop towns of Umbria. My favorite town is Assisi - how lovely - so glad we had the tour with Patricia - explained much so that we understood the glory of St. Francis as well as St. Chiara. It is a beautiful morning as we prepare to depart the Fattoria del Gelso for a night's stay in Rome before heading back to the U.S. Actually, every morning has been bright and sunny and we've enjoyed our caffè at the tables under the gelso with a second cup of cappucino at Victor Hugo's Bar on our way out of town to explore the country side and the surrounding hill towns. We've had many memorable meals, particularly at 3 enotecas - Le Delizie del Borgo in Bevagna, Enoteca Properzio in Spello (beware of the masterful salesmanship of Roberto and his beautiful daughter Irene), and L'Alchimista in Montefalco - but our first dinner prepared by Theresa was magnifico! Marco and Wendy were most helpful in guiding us to where to visit. The Fattoria del Gelso felt like home complete with garden (cherry tomatoes are like candy), 2-6 cats in the yard, I-Pod music system, and the most refreshing swimming pool where we sought refuge from the heat and a day of sightseeing every afternoon around 4:00 pm before an evening of more good food and wine. Thank you Suzy and Bill for sharing this wonderful spot with us, and Theresa, Marco , and Wendy for your assistance and good humor during our stay. And such fun to have Nat and Sally F. with us.
