Encinitas, California

California Beach Culture Defined
Almost all of Southern California’s oceanfront communities can be classified as “surfy,” but Encinitas seems to embody this spirit better than most. You’d be hard pressed to find a lineup—or a line at the local Starbucks—that isn’t occupied by some level of surf celebrity or industry insider. Add the fact that fun-to-excellent surf can be ridden here almost every day of the year—if you’re willing to drive the coast for 30 minutes in either direction—and that you’re plugged into a laidback microcosm that harbors all the best qualities of the greater San Diego surf community (without the snob-factor of La Jolla, the post-collegiate-party-factor of Pacific Beach, and the street-kid-factor of Ocean Beach), and you’ve got a surf town that stands out among a dense—and very inviting—pack.

Waves
There’s Seaside, Cardiff Reef, Swamis, and D Street if you’re looking for the obvious. And if you’re not, just show some ingenuity and scout out the miles of beachies, reefs, jetties and river mouths that all have their day. Outside of the official “Incorporated Encinitas” city limits, Blacks, the La Jolla reefs, and Ocean Beach to the south, and Oceanside and Trestles to the north are all easily within striking distance for even the most travel-challenged waverider. Crowds can be brutally thick in this part of the world, but, then again, it’s 100 percent possible to surf alone—if you’re motivated.

Culture
Some towns have “real” culture—you know, like plays and museums and stuff—and some towns have “beach” culture. Encinitas is loaded with the latter. Nearly every garage, in every neighborhood, west of the 5 freeway sits choked with boards. The roads bump with cars that bristle action-sport accoutrements and have floor mats caked in sand. The menus of local eateries list burgers, omelets, and burritos named after nearby waves. And the population, as such, looks and plays the part. If you’re looking for “real” culture, move to Paris. If you’re looking for surf culture, Encinitas is your place.

Quality of Life
Everyone raves about Southern California’s climate—for good reason. You know a place is perfect when 50-degree temps at dawn, the occasional spell of rain, or a few weeks of overcast skies come June are grounds for complaint among the locals. Plus, there are tons of great bars, restaurants, and eateries, and a “bro-ette” for every bro. The only real quality-of-life drawback: the crowds. But if you weigh the pluses (good weather, winds, and waves) with the minuses (too many people), the population density starts to make sense.

Owner's Map of Cardiff by the Sea

Our family of 6 lives in Boise, Idaho and we love southern California, especially the San Diego area. In January of 2008 we purchased an incredible piece of property in Cardiff and remodeled it lovingly to its former glory. We spend as much time as possible here, 13 visits in 10 months! The remodel was finished in May of 2008 and we have fully stocked this house with the best furniture and kitchen equipment and electronic equipment. We would love to share our house with you because we know you will have an incredible family vacation in San Diego.

is the house what you expected from the listing?, if not, what in particular was different? I do not think that we expected such a great view of the ocean. It really was amazing. Also the bedrooms were really comfortable and the sun room was far larger then expected. But this just underpins that it is difficult to take accurate pictures that fully show how great the place is. do you think you go your money's worth? Absolutely. To make the decison to rent your house we compared it to the price of getting two hotel rooms. While it is a little more expensive then getting two standard hotelrooms it is far less expensive then getting two nice hotelrooms with an ocean view. And there are far more benefits from renting your house than a hotel room such as being able to cook ourselves, having our own yard, the firepit and more privacy. what did you like? That the house really felt like a home. There was lots of towels and bedding. Beachchairs, surf- and boogieboards. The firepit was a favorite in the group. We sat out there most nights. Also the washer and drier were great. Looked brand new. Chris was a good caretaker and very helpful in case of questions. It was nice that he was close by. These I think were the highlights of what we liked. There are many more which also include the area in general, the beach, the park and Seaside Market. would you rent again with us if the opportunity arose? Yes and I am hoping the opportunity will. I am also certain I will recommend the house to anyone mentioning that they are going to the San Diego area. JT, Denmark.

    • The best location by far! We were a short drive to the zoo and then Disneyland. The park is beautiful, the beach is PERFECT! Food and shopping was within walking and the best market! I would return here over and over again. The house was beautiful to say the least and very private. What a perfect get away!

    • We just returned from a wonderful week in Cardiff. The house was perfect for our famiy of four (which includes a 6 year old and a 3 year old). The house was very confortable and kid friendly. We felt right at home while we were there. The owners were very easy to work with and they provided everything that we needed to make our stay enjoyable. The town center was within walking distance and we discovered some great little resturants. The beach is also within walking distance, but the owners provided a state beach parking pass that made access quick and easy. We hope to be back again next summer.

    • Definately would return. There were 4 adults and 2 kids, ages 5 & 3 staying for a week. Plenty of room, the beds were awesome (my father in law even lifted up the mattress to see what kind it was before leaving!). Plenty of linens, lots of toys and great access to beach, I-5 and the train station. The Fire Pit was so much fun, and the views are indescribable.

    • We just returned from a vacation in this home. We have a one year old, and felt very comfortable with him here. The house is very kid-friendly with toys, books, pack n play, baby shampoo, etc. The house is very private and the yard is great. We loved laying in the hammock in the sun. We were upset we didn't get to try out the fire pit, it looked amazing. Plenty of room, the renovated kitchen was spotless and the linens, towels, surfboards and other amenities were high quality. I felt like I was in my own home. The owners were a pleasure to deal with, answered all of our many questions and everything went smoothly. The location is great, close to the beach, surf, restaurants, parks, zoos, etc. Certainly a house to consider, and I would definitely go back.

    • Staying here was the perfect vaction for us. Our vacation was filled with sunny days, balmy nights, swimming & surfing, playing tennis, sampling the great cuisine within walking distance. It was the perfect getaway for us. Very laid back, relaxing, it felt like we were miles away from where we were escaping!

    • We are so thrilled with this house and it's location that I'm writing this post while we are here. Not only does this place live up to the VRBO details, it exceeds them! It's a quick drive to all the nearby attractions(less than 30 minutes to the Zoo and Sea World)and you can walk to shops and great restaurants is just moments. We are here with our 3 year old son and you could not find a more kid friendly house. While we've relaxed and enjoyed sunsets over the water, he's run around the fenced yard worry free. The city park across the street is beautiful and has a great playground as well. The house it's self is inviting and the beds are luxurious. At the end of a busy vacation day a comfy bed is a must... I'm sleeping better here than at home! We are thrilled that we came and will never stay in a hotel down here again.

    • This is such a great house. The location is perfect! Not only is it within walking distance to a great beach, it is located next to a fun city park and only a couple of minutes walk to some yummy resturants and a tasty bakery. We also trained into San Diego for a Padres game and drove to LegoLand (8 miles north) and Birch Aquarium (10 miles south). It is one of the only homes on the street that actually has a yard. Our kids had fun playing in the fenced yard but we especially enjoyed the patio with a fire pit. After a fun day at the beach we would shower and eat then sit by the fire to roast marshmellows and visit late into the night. The big comfy chairs made it hard to finally go inside and fall into bed. Our kids called one of the bedrooms the "fun room." An oversized bedroom with wall to wall windows on three walls made you want to linger every morning. The kitchen is a great redo with a fun old-fashioned gas stove that made cooking fun. Our nine-year-old said it well, "It was awesome!"

    • My husband and I and our 2 kids (4 1/2 and 2 1/2) stayed here for 10 days. We had a wonderful time. It has everything you need, towels, linens, cookware, computer, cable, etc. The landscaping of the home is beautiful, reminiscent of Hawaii. It was so nice to sit by the firepit in the cool evenings and roast marshmallows with the kids. Their is also the best gourmet market within walking distance. The park across the street is a plus with kids and the beach is super close. We cannot wait to go back!
