Location: Coupeville, Whidbey Island, Northwest & Islands, Washington State, USA (San de Fuca area of Penn Cove, 5 miles from Coupeville)
Accommodations: Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Detached Unit, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-7)
Keywords: Cottage
Our vacation cottage is set in a century-old apple orchard with a view of Penn Cove, home of the famous Penn Cove Mussel Farm. This unique location on Whidbey Island is half-way between Oak Harbor, (the "big city" and home to the Whidbey Naval Air Station) and Coupeville (historic town with great shopping and restaurants). There are several day-trip options nearby (Fort Casey, Ebey and Deception Pass State Parks are all within easy driving distance, and Port Townsend is a close ferry-ride away), but the property is designed to offer relaxation and recreation without going anywhere.
This property has been in our family for decades, but had been allowed to go wild until we set the goal of creating our own vacation spot. Now the property includes the two-bedroom cottage, a recreation barn (which offers play space for kids, a pool table, entertainment center, and over-flow sleeping space) a gazebo with built-in barbecue and campfire, and outdoor recreation space and activities. It is our own personal and private park, and home to resident eagles, deer and rabbits.
The cottage itself was completed in 2004. It includes a loft bedroom with queen bed, a second bedroom with triple bunk beds, full bathroom, full kitchen and a dining/living area.
One block down the street is the private beach, also owned by our family. The Penn Cove mussels shipped all over the country can freely be picked off the beach and taken home for a delicious meal. Clamming is another option. This beach is not open to the public, so you can spend an entire day there without seeing another person.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2003
We've been married since 1990 and have three children. Heather grew up on the island, and we lived on Whidbey Island as a young family but then moved to Seattle in 1998. At that time, our property served as a weekend camp site on visits to the island; we have many family and friends still in the area. Over the following five years, we spent weekends and vacations building the beautiful getaway we now enjoy and share with others.
Why the Owner Chose Coupeville
We were fortunate enough to inherit this property from our family. When we took ownership, it was just an apple orchard with a wonderful view of Penn Cove; our own Secret Garden. Over the course of five years, we built the four structures now on the property (cabin, barn, gazebo & storage shed). We love this location because of the peace and beauty it offers, and also because it is a part of our family heritage.
The Unique Benefits of this Cottage
We enjoy just being outside when we visit our orchard - listening the the water trickle into the pond, swinging in the hammock, watching the kids jump on the trampoline, sitting by the campfire, barbequeing and roasting marshmallows. When we feel like venturing out, we like playing on the beach, riding bikes in Ebey & Ft. Casey State Parks, visiting Coupeville, and going to the drive-in movie theater.
