Our vacation cottage is set in a century-old apple orchard with a view of Penn Cove, home of the famous Penn Cove Mussel Farm. This unique location on Whidbey Island is half-way between Oak Harbor, (the "big city" and home to the Whidbey Naval Air Station) and Coupeville (historic town with great shopping and restaurants). There are several day-trip options nearby (Fort Casey, Ebey and Deception Pass State Parks are all within easy driving distance, and Port Townsend is a close ferry-ride away), but the property is designed to offer relaxation and recreation without going anywhere.
This property has been in our family for decades, but had been allowed to go wild until we set the goal of creating our own vacation spot. Now the property includes the two-bedroom cottage, a recreation barn (which offers play space for kids, a pool table, entertainment center, and over-flow sleeping space) a gazebo with built-in barbecue and campfire, and outdoor recreation space and activities. It is our own personal and private park, and home to resident eagles, deer and rabbits.
The cottage itself was completed in 2004. It includes a loft bedroom with queen bed, a second bedroom with triple bunk beds, full bathroom, full kitchen and a dining/living area. One block down the street is the private beach, also owned by our family. The Penn Cove mussels shipped all over the country can freely be picked off the beach and taken home for a delicious meal. Clamming is another option. This beach is not open to the public, so you can spend an entire day there without seeing another person. |
