A city rich in culture, history and heritage, San Miguel de Allende is known as the home of heroes of the Mexican Independence and as a national center for the arts. Founded in 1542 by Fray Juan de San Miguel, a Franciscan missionary born in Spain, on the site of hot springs believed to have curative powers. He built an open air chapel and the Indian mission was named San Miguel in honor of his patron saint. Silver deposits were later found in the surrounding mountains and the mission town was renamed San Miguel el Grande and became center for Spain’s acquisition of the regions riches. As a colonial city, it has the charm and feel of “old Europe”.

In addition to St. Michael, the city’s other namesake, Ignacio de Allende y Unzaga was born in San Miguel in 1769. His family home is now a National Museum and sits on one corner of the main square known as El Jardin (The Garden). As a young man he became a major figure for Independence and together with Father Hidalgo led forces against the Spanish occupiers in 1810. In recognition of his heroic efforts, the government changed the name of San Miguel to San Miguel de Allende in 1826.

Known as Spain’s colonial jewel, it has always been and remains a city full of surprises hidden behind 50 foot stone walls and wrought iron adorned balconies. Within are stunning courtyards and lush gardens only visible when the magnificent old doors are laid open. The interiors now house gourmet restaurants, luxurious shopping, art galleries, museums and much more. The cobblestone streets and numerous public fountains and parks complete the trip to the 1700’s.

    • I would echo all the other positive comments, especially that the house is much better "in person" than in the pics. It is also a great space for entertaining, we had a party of about 30 which flowed comfortably through the kitchen and living dining area into the pretty little garden. There are lots of details that have been thought of, which makes it very welcoming, but the best part by far is the owners. They are accessible, and eager to meet the needs of their guests. If anything did go wrong, someone was "on it" right away and there was never any frustration of feeling ignored. We have already booked our return visit!!

    • Our family has just returned from a wonderful month in San Miguel de Allende staying at the house we found on VRBO # 190221. The location of the house is the best! From the front door a 3 or 4 minute walk on a pedestrian walkway takes you to "Ancha", a main street which has every kind of store and restaurant and also is a fixed US$2 taxi ride to anywhere in the town. We adopted a policy of walking to places downhill and when feeling lazy, taking a taxi up the slight hill to the town center, an otherwise comfortable 10 minute walk from the house. The floor plan was perfect, when 2 couples came for a visit. Each of the 3 couples in the house had their own floor for living quarters and therefore complete privacy. The house really lacks for nothing. I used the 3rd floor office with the house desk top computer and my wife loved the 2nd floor office with its own bathroom (we brought a laptop computer). Almost every room in the house has a local telephone and the long distance (VOIP no charges) phone is cordless, which can be carried around the house. Every bedroom has a TV. The master bedroom has a big flat screen. The living room also has a TV. The music system is superb and music CD's are very cheap in SMA. The house feels new and luxurious and is spotlessly cleaned and maintained. This is handled by the housekeeper Rosa and the caretaker Federico, both of whom are remarkably pleasant, professional and attentive. There are very few cars on the street and our car was safe and conveniently parked at the front door. We are absolutely going to return to SMA and this house next year.

    • My wife and I have just returned from a 3 week stay at this house. We should have stayed at leaat a full month but business called. We had visitors for one week and used all 3 bedrooms, everyone had the privace of their own floor which was wonderful. The house is much nicer than the website describes. Every possible amenity is there. The location and ease of parking is perfect. Rosa the housekeeper and Federico the caretaker could not possibly be more pleasant and attentive. The owner of the house was overwhelmingly concerned with our comfort and ejnoyment of the house. We most highly recommend this house and are already planning our return in 2009 for a month or two.
