Carvoeiro house description

Vila Borboleta ('Butterfly Villa') is a spacious architect designed house standing in its own grounds. It has superb distant views of the sea from the first floor balcony and the Monchique Mountains are visible from the rear garden and kitchen window.The prettily tiled pool is surrounded by brick paving and the garden has a colourful display of hibiscus, oleanders and Bougainvillaea. The villa is comfortably furnished with country antiques and tradtional Portuguese furniture. There is an ample supply of china and cutlery and a range of cooking utensils and electric equipment. Each bedroom has a fan and in the winter there are several electric radiators and a lovely open fire for which logs can be oredered. Both bathrooms have twin basins in marble surrounds and each bath has an overhead shower and the ground floor bathroom has a separate stand alone shower.


The villa is about 2 km from a mini-market, 3 km from the market town of Lagoa, 5 km from Carvoeiro (an attractive and lively fishing village with bars and cafes) and 9 km from Portimao (a large fishing port and shopping centre). Intermarche supermarket is about 3 km on the Lagoa-Carvoeiro road. Golf, tennis, riding and many other sports can easily be arranged. Our maid, Lucilia, comes to clean the villa five times a week and changes the linen and towels once a week. She is happy to do personal laundry and ironing for our guests in return for a small tip. The normal changeover day is Thursday but alternative arrangements can be made before May or after September.

There are many pleasant walks, along the coast or inland,with good habitat for butterflies, birds and a profusion of beautiful spring flowers. Benagil beach is within walking distance and other fine beaches are a short drive away. Fish is a speciality in local restaurants and prices are very reasonable. Interesting trips can be made to Silves, the Monchique mountains,Cape St Vincent and the west coast.

Car: Recommended

The villa is about 56km west of Faro airport and there is easy access via the motorway. It stands on top of a low hill in a rural area with several small-holdings and vineyards nearby. It is quiet but not isolated. There are pleasant walks in the countryside and along the coast. Beautiful beaches near the villa include Marinha, Carvalho and Albandeira. The fishing village of Benagil also has a pretty beach and several delightful restaurants. Silves, the former Islamic capital of the Algarve, with interesting remains of a Moorish castle has a lovely setting in the midst of hundreds of orange trees. Shopping enthusiasts will find plenty of scope in nearby Portimao and in the local supermarkets and covered markets of Lagoa and Carvoeiro.

Golf: Many 18 hole golf courses near the villa include Penina, Gramacho, Silves etc Palamares and Quinta de Lago are about a 30 minute drive from the villa

There is also a 9 hole golf course course very near the villa

Why the Owner Chose Carvoeiro:
We chose this site on which to build our house as it has an ideal situation, in a lovely, tranquil rural area near the sea,yet not isolated. The French architect who designed our house created a spacious living area with a high ceiling which helps to keep the villa cool in the Summer ( in addition to air conditioning or fans in all rooms) and there is an attractive fireplace for log fires in addition to background haeting in the winter.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
We love our rural location with lovely early almond blossom and pretty wild flowers in the Spring. From our villa we can see a large number of butterflies and birds,inculuding beautiful golden orioles. We also love our garden with the vibrant colours of hibiscus and bougainvillaea. The sea is a short distance away by car and if we feel energetic we can walk to Benagil or the 'Smuggler's Cove' beach ,mostly along quiet country tracks. However when we need to shop there are several supermarkets within a 5 minute drive and three attractive indoor markets in Lagoa, Carvoeiro. and Silves within easy reach. Any shopoholics staying with us can explore the shopping malls in Portimao which is about 8 miles from our house. We are also very close to the famous Porches Pottery where we bought many of the mugs, bowls and jugs.for use at the villa.
