Location: Boston, Greater Boston, Massachusetts, USA (Beacon Hill, in the heart of downtown Boston)

Accommodations:  Condominium/Apartment, Studio + Loft, 1 Bath (Sleeps 3)

Welcome to our Studio, where sustainable design dances with elegance and exquisite detail in this lovingly handcrafted haven in the heart of Beacon Hill. The Studio represents the owners' (a husband-and-wife design team) philosophy of walking softly on the earth while living passionately and luxuriously -yet, without excess or waste....the truest measure of "being green"!!! Experiencing this well-designed small space provides clients & guests alike with a heightened spatial awareness of what is truly necessary to live well.

Particulars: Top (4th floor) apartment has large sunny windows on all sides. Facing distant rooftops and the sky, you'll wake to birdsong and quietude in the Queen size mahogany custom built-in "window bed" even tho you're in the heart of the city.

The Studio is beautifully appointed with high thread count cotton sheets, down pillows, silk/woolen blankets & German Batiste Down comforter. The fully equipped kitchen has white Italian dishware, All-Clad & Cuisinart pots & pans, fully restored vintage gas cooking stove, Miele dishwasher....in short, everything one needs to create a beautiful meal. (Wife was a former private chef - so the kitchen is a true cook's kitchen.)

There's also a full size washer & gas dryer. The tiled, windowed bath has tub & shower. An eclectic library and music collection & Vermont Castings gas stove to take the chill off cool nights complete the ambience of the Studio.

There is space for 2 yogis to comfortably do yoga in the central floor area in front of the fire..... The large antique desk faces East & granite kitchen counter provides comfortable dining for 4-6 or use as a 2nd work/planning space.

The plant-filled roofdeck overlooking the Charles River is private & available for our guests only. Take the time to pick some organic salad greens and tomatoes for an al fresco luncheon; Meditate, do yoga or simply sit and be present for the sun's rising or setting w/ cup of tea or glass of wine....Time will slow down to the extent you allow it to here....

All linens are line dried either on the roof or inside in inclement weather - all year round. The smell & feel is crisp & full of the sun's energy...We have not used the gas dryer in 4 years to further reduce our carbon footprint. (Of course, guests may use! Or there's always the clothesline with wooden clothespins.....!!!!)

Practical Bits: 5-10 minutes' walk to Boston's "Red or Green Subway Lines," Charles Street fine dining, coffee shops, boutiques, flower shops, chocolatier, pastry shops, wine & liquor stores, etc; 10 minutes' walk through Beacon Hill to the new Whole Foods grocery store; 20 minutes' walk through the Boston Common & Public Garden to the shops on Newbury Street & Prudential Center.

Remember to support our local organic farmers May thru October when the Farmer's Markets come to Copley Square & Government Center twice weekly!

    • Dear Deb and Angus, We were once told that perfection is not of this world. This place is a direct contraindication to that adage. It is perfect! Petite, self-contained, exquisitely decorated, exuding charm and warmth. To all who follow we wish you the same shangri-la! Love Cate and Richard from Ottawa

Oh MY, where do I begin…? Your little apartment is utterly magical. I really didn’t want to leave … and I could be happy there for very long stretches of time, I fear ;-) It’s one of the quirkiest, loveliest and most charming little spots on the face of this earth. And it's imbibed with feelings of good cheer and warmth, you feel it immediately upon arrival, and at first I thought it was because so many of your personal things were blessing the place, and then I read thru the guestbook and I realized its really because there have been Sooo many guests who passed thru, felt the same, and left a little of their happiness & delight behind, you can feel ALL OF IT, can't you?;-) and we were there 2 days before we noticed that the place is entirely (and very cozily) heated thru ambient heat, passive solar and that charming little stove!! And as a returning Beacon Hill’er … it's just the fantasy Beacon Hill flat, couldn’t be more spot on if it were a movie set! Your design is genius – and I too am a fan of small spaces, in fact my hubby and I are in-process of renovating our house in Pasadena ( a 1500 sf 2BR cottage) and we fought the urge to rip it down and build a 2700 sf “new house” on the lot, and instead (emotionally) opted to do a gut rehab of the existing footprint, only adding about 150 sf by enclosing a patio, and keeping the original charm and whimsy of the house. (and when the bill comes in and it cost JUST AS MUCH to end up with a still-small-house … well we have tossed and turned on that one…) But now I feel oh-so-much better about that decision, as I know that DnA would approve (and now I think I need to hire you guys to consult on the interior finishes, because the level of creative detail in your BHill place is masterful!) So, lastly let me say that we must be kindred spirits, I found all my favorite books on your bookshelves, and my favorite music in your CD library. We enjoyed the Sarah Brightman, Carole King, Sondheim and Cole Porter tracts all week, and I had a cloistered afternoon on Friday by the fire rereading Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet … start to finish.
