Elegant Home, 1 Mile to Volcanoes Nat'l Park, Sleeps up to 13

Called the Volcano Forest Escape rental house......This house was built in 2006 and makes a great home away from home with comfortable beds, a 40-inch LCD TV with HD Cable and surround sound, three comfortable futon sofas that can double as beds for extra sleeping because this vacation house sleeps up to 13 guests. There are vaulted ceilings in the living room and master bedroom. There’s a well-stocked kitchen with stainless steel appliances- just bring up some groceries and you're ready to cook on the gas stove. The dining table seats eight with room for five more at the kitchen peninsula counter. A dishwasher makes for easy clean-up. Guests love having the washer/dryer and free high-speed internet access, which is a must for those who need to stay connected. Comfy outdoor furniture and a stainless steel gas grill are outside for your enjoyment.
Sleep in cool comfort in the high-elevation of the Volcano rain forest, 3700 ft. We have high quality sheets, warm blankets and comforters and there are heaters for every room, or fire up the wood burning stove to warm the whole house. This house is insulated, unlike many others in the area, which we found to be too cold when we were house hunting. The area is quiet and relaxing; you'll enjoy the native Hawaiian birdsong. Our lot is nearly a 1/2 acre and has many native Ohia trees with beautiful red blossoms. View the giant Hapu’u fern trees that grow to 30 feet tall, and tropical flowers from every window.
You'll love this house and there's a lot to do nearby, so you'll want to stay awhile. The entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about a mile away, but if that makes you nervous, bear in mind the town of Volcano is upslope of the crater and safer from lava flows than other parts of the island. The volcano has been erupting continuously since 1983 and in 2008 a huge steam vent opened in Halemaumau Crater, which can be viewed from different angles at the Volcano House and the Jagger Museum. At the Visitor Center, there's an informative film and rangers can update you on the volcanic activity. There are also free ranger-guided hikes available to admire the impressive steaming caldera that once was a lake of lava. Exploring the park further you'll find sulfur banks, steam vents and a lava tube, which you can walk through. There are also many hiking trails. Visiting after dark you'll see a fiery glow from the steaming vent.
The quaint town of Volcano has a few markets, a gas station, a post office, even a skate park and is home to a Thai restaurant, the Lava Rock Cafe, Kiawe Kitchen and the Kilauea Lodge Restaurant. A farmer's market with fresh produce, hot coffee, pastries and breakfast sandwiches is open every Sunday morning, from 6:30-9 a.m.
Drive the Mauna Loa Scenic Road to see tree molds, created when a lava flow encountered a damp tree truck hardening the lava around it. More tree molds are seen at the beginning of the Napau Crater Trail. There's also Kipuka Puaulu (Bird Park), a 30-minute hike through an old growth of forest surrounded by newer lava flows. At the end of the scenic road is a trail head to Mauna Loa Trail, the place people start a multi-day trek to ascend the summit of Mauna Loa.
South of the Volcanoes National Park entrance near mile marker 38 is the Ka'u Desert Trail, which lead to footprints, most created during the explosion of 1790 and a few from an earlier explosion in the 1500s.
Volcano Golf & Country Club is a few minutes away at a 4,200 foot elevation. This is the Big Island's oldest golf course, dating back to the 1920s. The layout has stunning mountain views. You may see wild turkeys, Nene geese and Hawaiian hawks. Due to the elevation, expect extra distance on well-struck shots. The back 9 has several marvelous holes and one of Hawaii's best par-5s at the 17th hole. A round of golf is $63. Pele's restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week. Clubs available for rent, as are gas and electric carts.
The Volcano Winery is a mile past the golf course, with several unusual wines and free wine tasting. We like the Volcano Red.
There are many exotic treasures to see in every direction by driving 30-45 minutes. Punaluu Black Sand Beach is popular with sea turtles that can be seen swimming nearby and resting onshore. Going another direction you'll find volcanically heated tide pools, including the popular Champagne Pond. There’s great snorkeling in this area and on the way there is the Lava Tree State Park, full of lava tree molds. Keep going around the flank of the mountain if you'd like to see where the lava is currently entering the ocean, best viewing is after dark & flashlights are needed.
Hilo is just a half-hour away and is home to Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens with petting zoo hours from 1:30-2:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Rainbow Falls is beautiful and there’s also the World Botanical Gardens & Umauma Falls, a triple-tiered waterfall. The Lyman Museum has an incredible display of Hawaiian geology, plant, animal and fish life and there’s also the Pacific Tsunami Museum, many restaurants and shopping opportunities.

Greg's home rental was a super location for visiting all the sites that the Park had to offer. We found our new location easily with Geg's directions clearly outlined, and soon found ourselves quickly settled. The home has all the amenities, fitted into a very appealing set-up.Lots of room for everybody, well outfitted kitchen, games for the children. A totally pleasant and secure place to enjoy Volcano! It helps to bring groceries, as per Greg's advice.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

We really enjoyed staying here and would definately like to come back! It was close to Volcano with a great kitchen and fireplace. Property is clean and very well-maintained. Very memorable vacation!! Really easy to work with property owner. Definately get groceries in Hilo (KTA,farmers market) before heading up. Enjoyed hiking volcano, lava hunting, and driving to black sand beaches.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We were an extended family of 11 (2 of our children with their families - 5 grandchildren ranging from 10 - 2). The house had adequate sleeping for all (we slept in living room very comfortably), perhaps the only slight drawback was that one bathroom was en suite so the rest of us shared the common one most of the time. The location is great, so close to the park and the village. The kitchen was well equipped and had all the spices and sauces we needed. The garden is lovely and secluded. So overall it was a great stay. Thanks GregRecommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, adventure seekers.

Excellent location if your main focus is VOLCANO, 5 minutes drive to the volcano national park. Quiet and dark (which is what we preferred!) neighborhood. The house is very spacious for a party of 4, a lux! Greg responded quickly to my questions/requests during our stay. He even went to guide me how to get a rental car deal and best place for grocery shopping while we were planning the trip. We found some grocery items left by previous renters in the kitchen. Very thoughtful! A sense of community! I'd rather them to be used than tossed out just because they are open. However, wish they had sorted out time to time. My son went thru all open items, checked expire dates and ended up taking a lot of them out. He emptied them, rinsed jars/bottles and put into recycles. All in all, we had a good time staying this house. Highly recommended!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers.

My family rented this house in November and had a great stay. It was located close to Volcano National Park, so we were easily able to visit the park both during the day as well as after it got dark. It was also about a 30 min drive from Hilo, where we picked up our groceries before arriving at the house. The photos of the house were very accurate, and we found the house to be in very good condition-the kitchen was very well equipped with pots, pans, and utensils, and everything was very clean. It was a very spacious house, and a large family or group could comfortably stay there. I found it very easy to correspond with Greg via e-mail, and then through texts while we were there. We would definitely recommend this property! Thank you!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway.

We were concerned about booking online with someoe we were not familiar with but Greg was great. His communication is the best I have ever experienced. We were booking for the purpose of a wedding but the Groom received a job offer he couldn't turn down even though it meant our trip would have to be delayed. I sent Greg an email cancelling and within 48 hours our refund was back in our bank - unbelievable service. My arrival date given is not correct since we actually cancelled but a date was required.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

Our family was completely satisfied with the accomodations at the Volcano home. It was very well maintained and has all the updated appliances that anyone would need. The location was excellent for our trip to the volcanos, the weather was perfect. It was hot and humid in Hilo town, but the volcano home was nice and cool. Greg & Cindy do an excellent job in maintaining and communicating with their guest. Thanks you.Recommended for: People with disabilities, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2008
About the owner: Aloha, I'm a husband, father, jack of all trades, coach of all sports and owner/manager of 5 vacation rentals in Hawaii. I was raised in Hawaii from the age of 8 years old after my family moved here from the USA mainland. Hawaii has so much to offer and I hope you get the chance to visit and explore this amazing state.
Why the Owner Chose Volcano:
We love it in Volcano. You can experience 11 of the 14 climates in Volcano. The ever-changing historical beauty of the Volcano National Park is amazing. The small town feeling and tight community in Volcano is familiar since I grew up in a small town on Oahu.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
I enjoy the cooler temperatures at the higher elevation in Volcano. It can be over 90 degrees with 100% humidity on Oahu but in Volcano it will be a cool 75 degrees with very little humidity. And at night, the temperature cools down and reminds me of my college days on the mainland.
My family really enjoys the volcanic changes that go on at the Volcano National Park. With the park being only one mile away, it's easy to take a drive after dinner thru the park to see the glow of the lava. And everytime we visit, we go to the Sunday Farmers Market in Volcano Village.
