Colossal Redwoods, Wine Country & Pacific Coast (See Specials)
Year Purchased: 1997
Why the Owner Chose Cazadero
I first looked at properties right on the Sonoma coast, but I found them to be windy and foggy too much of the time. But the Dreamery is in a protected "banana belt" micro-climate -- just one coastal range removed from the ocean. I chose Cazadero because it’s off the beaten path, yet close enough to enjoy the coastline (15 min), the Russian River (10 min), and wine country attractions. Santa Rosa airport is 45 min. away and it's only 98 min. to the Golden Gate Bridge (I timed it!). You'll be close to world-class amenities and everything this eco-adventure region of N. Calif. has to offer.
The Unique Benefits at this House
I must have been an innkeeper in a previous life because I love stewarding this tranquil retreat for folks who want to slow down, reconnect with nature, and share intimate time with a loved one. We’ve given special attention to creating a calming atmosphere with extra touches that offer you an ongoing sense of “Greeting.” The goal is to delight our guests by offering a peaceful respite from the Hurly-Burly of the fast-paced urban scene. Visit the Dreamery, fill your lungs with fresh country air, and feel the Calm.
Outdoor church set in a fairy ring of redwoods, complete with a massive stone altar.
Quaint tee-pee and hanging foot bridge leading to a summer camp.
Home of the historic one-horse General Store and Post Office. Cazadero was the northern terminus of the North Pacific Coast Railroad, originally laid in the 1870s. Check out the photos at the store.
Summer camp offering courses in music and performing arts. Site of another hanging foot bridge crossing of Big Austin Creek.
Delicious desserts and pizza at this nearby bakery -- just a stone's throw from the Dremery.
Cazadero offers great natural beauty with lush forests, year-round and seasonal creeks, meadows, and rugged terrain. Stunning large redwoods, bay trees, and oaks are commonplace. Wildlife is abundant.
Terrific bicycling along Fort Ross and King Ridge roads. Cazadero is approximately 10 miles (16 km) from the Pacific Ocean, the rugged Sonoma Coast and the mouth of the Russian River.
CazSonoma Inn & Restaurant, along Kidd Creek features a natural pool and waterfall amid a majestic redwood forest. Open from May - Thanksgiving, serving dinner and a lovely Sunday brunch.
Old Russian Fort and historic settlement dating back to 1812. Fort Ross was the southernmost settlement in the Russian colonization of the North American continent, and was established as an agricultural base to supply Alaska. It was the site of California's first windmills and shipbuilding, and Russian scientists were among the first to record California's cultural and natural history
The Russian River Resort Area is redwood country in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country just a few miles from the spectacular Sonoma Coast. The Russian River offers fine restaurants, wineries, fishing, boutique stores, farmers markets and joins small eclectic towns such as Guerneville, Forestville, Monte Rio, Rio Nido, and Duncans Mills.
Driftwood forts/beach combing/romantic sunsets/whale watching/fishing, and much more Harbor Seal Colony -- Hundreds of seals reside near the mouth of the Russian River. It's fun to watch them fishing or basking on the sand.
Numerous state beaches and parks offer wonderful coastal hikes. Rocky promontories, panoramic views, kelp-dotted coves, and the dramatic sounds of pounding surf; open grasslands, forested hills, pristine prairies, and pygmy forests- you can experience all of these coastal wonders in this area. With hundreds of miles of hiking trails, rugged coastline, and an underwater park, you can enjoy a variety of picnicking, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, skin and SCUBA diving, and camping.
The ancient coast redwood is the tallest being on our planet! These remarkable trees live up to 2,200 years, grow to a diameter of 26 feet, and stand up to 375 feet tall. The serene, majestic beauty of this Grove includes some beauties, and is a living reminder of the primeval redwood forest that covered much of this area before logging operations began during the 19th century.
Sonoma Wine Country encompasses thirteen wine growing appellations with more acres of vineyards than Napa. This premium wine growing region produces some of the finest Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. At the heart of Sonoma Wine Country is its largest appellation, The Russian River Valley. A must on any trip to wine country is a visit to the historic Korbel Champagne Cellars. You'll see where the world-famous Korbel Champagnes were first made more than 100 years ago, how champagne is made, and the history of the Korbel legacy.
Dozens of wineries and vineyards in the Forestville/Graton/Sebastopol area. This is the Green Valley AVA (appellation), one of 13 that are designated in Sonoma county. This premium wine growing region produces some of the world's finest Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Visit dozens of wineries and vineyards along the "Wine Road" Westside road is just one of many beautiful backroads through winding Tuscan scenery. Sample premium wines while visiting family winery after family winery.
Sandstone and Tafoni Ever wonder where the streets of San Francisco came from? Sandstone from Salt Point was used in the construction of San Francisco's streets and buildings during the mid 1800's. If you look closely at the rocks at Gerstle Cove, you can still see eyebolts where the ships anchored while sandstone slabs were loaded onboard.
Today, this pristine reserve contains second-growth redwood, Douglas fir, grand firs, tanoaks, and a plethora of rhododendrons. Each May these spectacular flowers burst into bloom and color the deep green of the forest with brilliant pink blossoms.
The Beach, actually a series of beaches separated by rock bluffs and headlands, extends 17 miles from Bodega Head to Vista Trail located 4 miles north of Jenner. Beachcombers, fishermen, sunbathers and picnickers can access the beach from more than a dozen points along coast Highway 1.
This park is known for the heavily forested Russian Gulch Creek Canyon, a headland that features the Devil's Punch Bowl (a large, collapsed sea cave with churning water), and a beach that offers swimming, tide pool exploring, skin diving and rock fishing. Inland, there is a 36-foot high waterfall. Hikers enjoy miles of hiking trails. The park also has a paved three-mile bicycle trail.
Austin Creek State Recreation Area is adjacent to Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve and is accessed through the same entrance. With open woodlands, rolling hills, and meadows, its topography offers a strong contrast to the dense, primeval redwood forest below. Here you will discover deep tree-lined ravines cooled by year round streams; grassy hillsides burnished golden by the heat of summer sun and turned emerald by plentiful winter rains; oak capped knolls that seem to float like islands on lakes of lowland fog; and rocky mountaintops that showcase an almost panoramic view. A paradise for the hiker and equestrian, Austin Creek rewards the explorer with twenty miles of trails and panoramic wilderness views, back-country camping, and%
Long sandy beaches below rugged headlands, a craggy coastline with natural arches and secluded coves are features that make this area one of California's most scenic attractions. During whale migration periods (Spring and Fall), it's common to see whales just off the coast.
A quaint village along River Road on your way to the coast, Offering unique shopping, restaurants, art gallery and coffee house. Live music at the Blue Heron tavern most weekends.
Owner's Map of Cazadero
The first time I drove along Big Austin Creek I was smitten – kinda like how you feel when you first fall in love with your mate. (Remember THAT feeling?) I searched for a year until I found the sweetest spot offering views up and down the year-round creek. The setting is a sunny and private waterfront opening in the coastal forest. The 1/2 acre property is graced with a pebble beach and 600-year-young redwoods. I named it “Sequoia Beach Dreamery.” Guests LOVE this place. And their guest book comments melt my heart and remind me how much I enjoy both the peaceful setting and its closeness to all that this magical part of northern California has to offer. Chances are you’ll come to think of it as your own dreamy getaway. Indeed, think of it as your new back yard. Warmly, Andrew, Santa Rosa, CA

My wife and daughter visited The Dreamery and were instantly amazed at what Andrew has done with this place. It provided a calming and relaxing getaway from our daily hectic life. We cannot say enough good things about it, highly recommended with all the amenities you could ask for. We will definitely be coming back for a longer stay.
Owner response:I so appreciate the kind words. Thank you for the care and respect you showed the property. In the interests of full disclosure ... a word of caution for prospective guests with young children: The house is NOT child proof. It doesn't have child-proof latches on the cabinet doors and drawers, laundry and household cleaners are not kept behind locked doors, there are stairs without baby gates, the deck is not baby proofed. The TV is not anchored with baby straps, The fireplace and concrete fireplace hearth do not have a child-proof gate, etc. We don't want to discourage families with young children, but we also do not want to give the false impression that the house and furnishings have been designed specifically for kids.
Recommended for:Families with young children, families with teenagers.

My family (husband, wife, two teenage daughters) had a wonderful 3 days at the Dreamery. Andrew greated us at the property and gave us a brief tour and introduction. In hindsight, he has everything so well labled with instructions, it was hardly necessary. He has thought of everything from firewood to laundry facilities. We did not need for anything and completely enjoyed the beautiful environment and comfortable home. It was very relaxing and peaceful. The only thing we could have wished for better was the weather as it was unusually rainy during our stay. We enjoyed it nonetheless and hope to visit again in the future.
Owner response:Alas, the weather is beyond my control, but the fact that you had a "relaxing and peaceful" visit during what turned out to be the worst storm of the year says as much about you and your family and is does about your enjoyment of the Dreamery. Honestly, one of my favorite times to be at the property is during a storm. Thank you again for your visit and for leaving the cottage in great shape!

My fiance and I were in need of a very relaxing, quiet vacation and when we found The Dreamery we knew we had found the perfect place! However, when we got there it was so much more than we had expected! From the robes hung in the closet for us, the cup of birdseed for the birds that like to spend time on the deck, to the warm water bottles in the bed - it was all the little extra touches that made The Dreamery so special. The house is immaculate and has been updated with great care, and the owner and rental company are extremely helpful, caring, and amazing. I would strongly recommend a stay at The Dreamery to anyone that needs (or wants) to restore a peaceful balance to their life! We look forward to staying at The Dreamery again in the future! **CAR RENTAL IS A MUST!!** *We recommend: A hike in the Armstrong Woods, The Blue Heron restaurant, The Rivers End restaurant, the bakery that is down the road, a drive down the coast, horseback riding, a canopy tour, and (of course) wine tasting! There is a great little store that is on the way to the Blue Heron on the right hand side of the road (all the sign says is wine tasting) that is excellent - the owner can give you a map and guidance to great vineyards! Also, if you do want to go wine tasting make sure to stop at Porter Creek vineyards!*
Owner response:Pam and Ethan traveled half way around the globe (on leave from service in Iraq) to visit the Dreamery. All of us feel honored for the opportunity we had to serve YOU! Wishing you both an early and safe return to your loved ones.

We have loved this place, and even more the welcome you have created for your guests, the gentle music, the invitation to be here, to care for ourselves, and to care for this space you have made precious. We walked in the garden, along the creek, and to the waterfall, lounged in the hot tub, made a fire, and watched movies. We drove to the mouth of the river and to the sea. We have enjoyed each other and much more. We feel connected to this home, organized in such a way that we can truly feel at home, at rest, at peace. This was a precious 60th birthday gift.
Owner response:Thank you for the kind words. You really got into the spirit of the place. The creek, the redwood forest -- and the invitation to just be here -- all of it awaits your return.

The Dreamery is aptly named,as it truly is a unique property hidden off the main Cazadero road. The setting is amazingly beautiful, with Japanese inspired landscaping to the front of the property and the wonderful beach leading to the shores of Austin Creek. Towering redwoods frame the house and the decks, and it was lovely to look through the branches at night(in the well positioned hot tub!) to count the stars. The interior is also Asian inspired and very tastefully appointed. Andrew's beautiful arrangements added a lovely touch to this serene setting. Sitting in front of the fire and looking out the windows at sunset was something we will not soon forget. We had everything we needed for a stay that was way too short and are planning to return as soon as we can!
Owner response:Thank you Anne and Scot. Reading your review allowed me to fall in love all over again -- vicariously, through your experience of it -- with a place that is dear to my heart.

My fiancée and I were looking for a relaxing getaway in wine country. The Dreamery certainly lives up to it's namesake. The owners have not left a stone unturned. The house has everything you would need and the decor is beautiful. We loved having a fire each night and relaxing out on Austin Creek. My fiancée loves the gardens as he is a landscape archiect. Having lived in Japan I really enjoyed the overall feel of the the home. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing home with us! We hope to be again in the future.
Owner response:Dear Christina & Patrick, thank you so much for your visit and the kind words. It was my pleasure to host you. The creek, the redwoods, and the garden all look forward to your return.
