Owner Description

We have lived in different areas of Alaska for the past 12 years, recently we moved from Juneau to a remote king salmon hatchery on South Baranof Island. We enjoy all the outdoor activities it has to offer.

Why the Owner Chose Juneau

We built this vacation rental in this area so others could experience the quite peaceful and beautiful surrounds that we see every day.

Lovely place to stay

Our family (2 adults, 2 kids) had a wonderful stay here. This property is beautiful inside and out. The pictures don't lie. I would highly recommend it. The bed is very comfortable, and the kids were fine on the futon. The kitchen had everything we needed. Everything was spotless. I never could figure out how to work the steam shower, but we were happy with the "regular" setting. It's very near the ferry terminal, which was convenient for our early morning departure, but it's tucked away in trees so you don't see the dock. I loved being away from the cruise ship crowds. We took a walk downtown and couldn't get out of there fast enough. Our recommendations: The Island Pub on Douglas Island, the Silverbow Bakery and the Hot Bite were great. I wish we had gone to Tracy's Crab Shack instead of the Twisted Fish. Whale watching with Orca Enterprises was unbelievable -- we saw humpbacks bubble netting twice and orcas chasing down a sea lion! The East Glacier hike at Mendenhall was lovely but a bit strenuous for me. The kids (ages 7 and 10) did fine. Start from behind the Visitors Center; you will climb up on switchbacks, whereas if you start in the other direction, you climb straight up a lot of stairs at one time. We did a hokey gold panning tour with Best of Alaska, but the kids liked it. And it was interesting to see how hard the Gold Rush prospectors had to work for very little pay off. We absolutely loved Southeast Alaska!

Thanks so much for sharing this haven with us. Phil and I have had a delightful time in Juneau - kayaking, hiking, ziplining, fishing (no luck) and, yes, a little shopping. Weve told everyone what a great place we've been staying. Best wishes for your children and each of you.

Oren: We had a wonderful time here and you guys were the PERFECT hosts! The boots today saved our feet. We only saw one bear today at Pack Dreek but it was a stunning day and we had the whole place to ourselves. What a way to end a great trip. Thanks again for everything and we'll see you next time. Kristi: We had a fantastic time in Juneau- what a BEAUTIFUL place!! I looked forward to ending the day taking a long shower and sleeping in a comfortable bed. The view wasn't too bad either. :) Thank you for all of your help and suggestions on places to visit AND bless you for the boots today. We hate to leave but it's easier knowing we will return in the future.

Since I didn't find a guest book I wanted to let you know how much Ken and I enjoyed our time at Hillside Haven. Keegan and Dustin were very hospitable, but more than that, it's a great space in a beautiful location. Having been to alot of rentals, I really appreciate a good bed, a functional kitchen, quiet and private surroundings and a nice aesthetic. Hillside Haven offers all of this and it's in Juneau to boot! And sadly for me, a fabulous spa shower will now be added to my list of preferences, probably never to be encountered again... Thanks for making such a special getaway spot available

Dear Theresa- We wanted to once again say thank you for a wonderful time during our visit. The location was beautiful, and was nice being a little away from the busy city centre (the cruise ships). The rental was in such great shape, and had all the household amenities that were perfect for our week long stay. Thank you for the recommendations on places to eat and cool hikes in the area. A few things we really would recommend for other people coming to visit. - West Glacier trail (at Mendehall, semi difficult) - the Tram, on a clear day, followed by a hike up the mountain - Fishing for halibut (Hi-Time Charters) - short hike on NW side of Douglas island - Wildlife day cruise (We enjoyed Adventure Bound, the Captain Cook) - hiking really anywhere was great, but remember the bear spray, rain pants and DEET A few places we enjoyed to eat - The Island Pub (on Douglas Island) - The Hanger (for a buffalo, or halibut burger) - The Hot Bite (for lunch) - Sandpiper cafe - Silverbow bakery - Tracy's Crab Shack We really look forward to coming back some day, and hope you all enjoy life on the island. Let us know if you are ever heading down to San Diego and looking for any ideas for some local places to check out. Thanks, Chris & Andrea Marino
