Michael, The shepherd boy of William Wordsworth's poetry, lived at his nook in the beautiful Lake District of England. Ours is in Sawyer, Michigan.
Those who have stayed here tell us there is no place in Harbor Country more charming than this wonderfully furnished secluded cottage on three acres surrounded by woods yet only a ten minute walk to our own private beach access.
Relax by the 40'x20' heated pool on resort style furniture. See if you can count and identify all of the birds that also come to visit. There are pool toys and floats for the kids and the kids at heart.
Don't be surprised if you awake in the morning to see a doe tending her fawns, a raccoon eating berries, a jackrabbit, or all of those red and gray squirrels looking for whatever they run around looking for.
You may want to read a book in either the English or Asian garden.(Those birds and other wild life may be there too. Maybe you want to stroll down to our gorgeous beach. (The bluffs will remind you of New England's Martha's Vineyard.) If you do, stay to watch one of our fabulous Southwestern Michigan sunsets.
The Chicago Tribune on June 9,2002 said: "Tour goers might want to save Vicki Michaels' 7 acres of gardens in Sawyer, Michigan for last. Walking on the fieldstone-lined paths through plantings that include hibiscus, daylilies, peonies, hostas, honeysuckle, hydrangeas, lilies of the valley, rhododendrons, roses and flowing trees and bushes has the same relaxing effect as a long massage." Two of those gardens are here for you.
Maybe you want to spend more time in the Cranny? If it's raining (which is rare) you can sit outside on the large screened porch. If you like to barbecue there is a large covered grill for you to use. You could spend the evening inside watching television or a rental movie from the local video store, but this activity is not recommended.
Whether you are a couple looking for a romantic setting - a group of friends wanting to get away - or a family with children - The Cranny is for you.
In addition to our beach, we are only a mile from Warren Dunes State Park where you can drive to the water and find facilities for children.

I can't say enough good things about this lovely property and Vicki, the gracious owner. My husband and I and our dogs had the best time when we came to the Cranny to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. We got exactly what we were looking for -- peace, relaxation, and a chance to unwind. The Cranny is the perfect getaway for nature lovers and a prime location for fall colors. Vickie's beautiful English garden is an oasis of tranquility and a perfect place for an early morning walk. The property itself is wonderfully decorated and Vicki thought of everything to make our stay just perfect, from the welcoming fresh flowers and fruit to the fact that our dogs were welcome there as well. We all loved the comfortable, airy porch and spent several nights soaking up the sounds of nature. The chipmunks in the tree outside the porch were truly enteraining and kept our dogs busy with their antics. We're already talking about our next trip back. Don't pass up the chance to enjoy this treasure -- both the property and Vicki (and doggie Sebastian) are truly one of a kind.

I would highly recommend this gem of a property. It is tough to capture the beauty of the surroundings and quaintness of the cottage in the photos. It really is a wonderful place! The cottage is very clean, well maintained and fully stocked with everything you would need. My husband and I stayed over Labor Day weekend with our 18 month old daughter and Cocker Spaniel. There was plenty of space for all of us and my daughter especially loved the pool w/ all the great toys. The owner, Vicki, is a real pleasure to work with. She was extremely responsive to our needs, even helping rearrange the second bedroom to house a crib. I can't say enough nice things about this place. We certainly hope to stay again.

Relaxing Home Away From Home Cottage

We had a great time relaxing with our two poodles at this great property and cottage. Quiet and private in wooded area near Vicki's gardens and a sunny open area around the large heated pool. Great for the dogs. Cottage has lots of room both inside and out. Lovely screened porch, comfortable living area, kitchen had plenty of room and included a washer and dryer. Nice welcoming touches: fruit, cheese, bread and wine; flowers on the table, dog bowls and dog bed too! Vicki does a great job in communicating information, touching base for any needs. Location is very convenient to I94, and Red Arrow Hwy and restaurants. Short 10 minute walk to beach or drive to reserved parking spot. Two minute walk to blueberry farm. We loved our time there!

This is a wonderful vacation spot for any family. The proximity to the Dunes as well as the surrounding communities makes it a perfect destination. We found St Joseph to be a great town for our son (age 5) with the Children's Museum and Beach area and we especially enjoyed visiting the many wineries in the area. The home has all the amenities anyone could ask for and is very welll kept up. The owner makes you feel at home and checked on us to make sure all of our needs were taken care of. In addition to the amazing pool and hottub, the access to the private beach is a special treat. We are always looking for a trip that allows our dog to join us and this was a great destination. Our son is already asking when we can return and we will return to this home when returning to Michigan.

I have stayed at The Cranny twice now, once with a group of 6, and this second time with 2 others. Absolutely wonderful. I cannot complain about anything. The first stay brought me back again, years later, and this last trip will keep me coming back as often as I can. The owner, Vicki, is very friendly, and her son is very helpful. They went out of their way to make our stay comfortable, and enjoyable. The house is very clean, has everything you need (a well stocked kitchen, full of supplies, a washer/dryer, and a dishwasher, internet access, tv w/dvd player, cable, fireplace, screened porch, 2 twin beds, 1 king bed, 1 pull out couch, 2 bathrooms, and a pool house with an outdoor pool and hot tub, and access to a beautiful private beach). You can do everything here: swim, walk, hike, go to the beach, take a drive, bbq, etc. The house is very close (walking distance) to a restaurant, bank, and is a short drive away from Warren Dunes State Park, several wineries, restaurants, Waco Park (which is less populated than Warren), and is also close to Interstate 94, so it makes day trips easy to do. The house is wonderful, the gardens are beautiful, and the lot is private without being remote. I highly recommend staying here.

A great place for a relaxing vacation, with all of the amenties included! The cottage is beautiful and the land that surrounds it even more eye-catching. With enough room for a family or small 4-5 person group, this getaway also includes a pool, beautiful gardens, a large open field that is perfect for backyard games, and easy access to the lake. I highly recommend this property!

Our stay here during Memorial Day Weekend was fantastic! Expect so much more than shown in this listing! The photos of the property don't do it justice. It is extremely clean and well maintained. We had absoutely everything we needed. The heated pool was fabulous and we spent a lot of time on the screened in porch relaxing, playing cards, and even enjoyed our meals there. The owner is a wonderful person who was there to answer all our questions and even personally drove us to our parking location for the private beach access. We have 2 children and there was plently of space for all. Plenty of dishes, cookware, soft towels, extra linens, ceiling fans, woodburning stove, fresh cut flowers in the dining room, comfortable beds, poolside furniture with umbrellas, doggie beds with their own food bowls....I could go on and on. We can't wait to return soon! You won't be disappoined with this property!!!!

This cottage was exactly what my mom. sister & I were hoping for when we rented it for our girls weekend in October. The booking process was easy and owner Vicki responded right away and made sure we had all the information we needed for our trip including answering numerous emails about the area since it was our 1st time to Michigan. The cottage itself was eaxactly as described and very cozy - you felt like you were walking into the door to your own home - Vicki's wonderful taste in decorations really made it special. Everything was clean and ready for use. There are two bedrooms - one master with a queen bed and another bedroom with two twin beds - even though my sister and I are in our 30's we felt like kids again (in a good way). There is also a pull out couch in the living room. The kitchen is spacious for a cottage and had everything you needed to cook your meals. There was also a beautiful enclosed porch suurounded by pine trees - perfect for sipping your morning coffee and listening to the birds or just reading a book. Vicki came by personally and asked if we needed anything and even offered to drive us to the private beach she has access to - when you meet her you will feel like you are already friends - she is very sweet and easy going. Also on the property is a huge pool, hot tub and deck with it's own pool house - it was closed at the time we were there because it was so cold but I can really imagine this being a fun area to enjoy during the summer. During the time we were there we did drive into New Buffalo for a wine festival and visited Warren Dunes State Park which was absolutely gorgeous - the walking trails, the sand dunes and the lake were picture perfect. We were only there a few days so we didn't get to explore too much but we hope to be back soon. I would definitely reccommend this cottage to family and friends (and I have!).
