DEAR RENTERS: WHILE WE LOVE SHARING OUR CASITA WITH OTHERS, WE HAVE DECIDED TO ENJOY IT OURSELVES FOR THE REST OF THIS YEAR. THERE MAY BE SOME AVAILABILITY MID-NOVEMBER THROUGH MID-DECEMBER.
AND IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THIS PERIOD, DROP US A LINE. BUT AT THIS POINT, WE'RE NOT TAKING FURTHER RESERVATIONS. THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST.

River Bend Casita ("small house") is set on a mesa near Abiquiu Lake, with spectacular 360-degree views of river estuary, cliffs and mountains in the high desert country of northern New Mexico. This 2-bedroom, 1100-square foot house was finished in July '08. It sits on 10 acres--remote, private, and extremely quiet. A HOT TUB sits by the private entrance to the master bedroom. Enjoy a soak at night, under the star-studded sky; the Milky Way earns its name as viewed from the hot tub. Read the Comments from the first guests at River Bend.

You can choose between two large porches or "portales" on which to dine, read, or just sit and gaze: to the west, you overlook the junction of two river estuaries, the Puerco and the Chama, which feeds into Abiquiu Lake; to the east, the distant Sangre de Cristo Mountains. To the south sits "El Pedernal," the 9,600 foot, flat-topped mountain that Georgia O'Keeffe made famous in her paintings; to the north, the brilliant red cliffs of Ghost Ranch.

A local wrangler, Fred Espinosa (575-613-2014), keeps his horses (some have been in movies) just off the mesa. You can see the horses from the living room. Fred offers trail rides--by the hour, half day, or day--at very reasonable rates--and he also offers lessons. Fred taught us to ride, and quickly had us out on stunning trails.

This area is called "Piedra Lumbre," land of the shining stone. Its rich, dramatic history-- truly the "wild west"--is presented in "The Valley of the Shining Stone, A History of Abiquiu," by Leslie Poling-Kempes, a beautifully written book. The casita is itself an ideal place for writing, with two desk tables in separate parts of the house: one facing south to Pedernal, the other facing north to Ghost Ranch. We have wireless access throughout the casita, via satellite.

There are ample opportunities for photography right on the mesa, and many more within walking distance. Early mornings and sunsets are often dazzling. Amateur astronomers will love the night skies. Hiking options are nearly endless. Abiquiu Lake, which you can see from the mesa, is a short drive--and on the way to Bode's General Store.

River Bend Casita at Abiquiu Lake

Year Purchased: 2009

Why the Owner Chose Abiquiu

We fell in love with Abiquiu on a cross-country trip, and kept coming back, year after year. We've done a fair bit of traveling, and this is by far our favorite spot.

The Unique Benefits at this House

The red rocks near Abiquiu Lake and Ghost Ranch make for one of the most beautiful sights in the southwest. Carson and Santa Fe national forests are nearby. The Chama Recreation Area provides many opportunities for activities on the water in a high desert setting.

Owner's Map of Abiquiu

We teach at the University of Maryland, and were lucky enough to find a second home in this beautiful place.
