An absolutely charming place to stay. We were there two days and felt instantly relaxed. The garden is wonderful to walk around and explore in your bare feet. So comfortable to pull up a chair and read or listen to the birds. The cottage is spacious, light and bright and has everything you need to feel at home. The beds and bathroom were top-notch. The art work is just superb. Easy drive to the Painted Hills to spend a few hours. I highly recommend to anyone, especially Oregonians who have never ventured east of the Cascades. Reading the guest book, kids love this place. It's like being in another world!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.
Owner response: Thank you John, for your positive feedback. We are always so happy to meet our guest in person and have a chat and hear about their vacation with us. It's a wonderful feeling that our place can be such a great part of your travel memories and stories.

Thank you for providing such a wonderfully peaceful and happy place to get away from it all. My husband and I arrived from Portland just before Christmas to a warm and inviting home, complete with farm fresh eggs! Our dogs gave the place a thorough sniffing over before declaring 2 paws up on our sweet home away from home. We loved the comfy bed and view of the snow covered garden. Everything was magical. Your personal artwork and colorful accessories are a bright and cheerful addition. The cottage is fresh and clean, and your responsiveness to our questions appreciated. Oh, and the wonderful neighbor who dropped off a holiday bottle of sparkling cider was a nice surprise! The town of Mitchell has a special feel that's bound to catch the hearts of those looking for a sweet getaway spot in a spectacularly beautiful part of Oregon. We hope to get back again to explore more of the surrounding area, and will definitely recommend staying at the cottage to our friends.Owner response: Thank you, Betsy and Family for your warm review. We love to hear that you enjoyed your winter vacation out here in our cottage and in beautiful Eastern Oregon. We hope that your words reach many travelers who have yet to discover that the winter season is very special out here, especially when it snowed and the landscapes, and gardens surrounding the cottages are transformed to magical places of serene beauty.

We had a great time--this was our second trip in 3 months. This trip we went to the Lucky Strike Mine and dug for Thunder eggs, which was AWESOME. Kopp and Cindy (owners of the mine) are quite the characters and we had a wonderful time, and brought home a lot of treasures.;) Next day we went to the painted Hills unit and hiked around everywhere that was allowed. It too was awesome. And we had perfect weather all weekend! The Painted Cottage was in full rose bloom and we also enjoyed the ripe Pears and Apples. we will come back! 2 Families from Bend, OregonRecommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We can highly recommend the Painted Hills Cottage to all travelers to the region! All of us in our group of eight plus two dogs had plenty of room in the spacious cottage, cooked great meals in the evening when we came back from our great adventures, and enjoyed sitting under the old apple trees till late at night. All the special little touches like the games for the kids in the game-room, the well equipped kitchen, and the organic shampoo and soaps among so many other highlights, were greatly appreciated. The free Wifi was another plus. Thank you for providing such a special place.Owner response: Thank you, Gabor and Family. We are happy that you were so pleased that you made spending time at the cottage and in the garden such a big part of your vacation. We're one of the few places here in Eastern Oregon that actually promote to bring your dogs along. The garden is a safe place and the hikes in the near surrounding are exceptional with lots of leash off places for the dogs to roam. Come back again one day, maybe in spring when the old apple trees are in bloom giving the garden such a soft and poetic feeling. Aruna

We had great four nights in this very private and quiet cottage. Everything is very well set up, very clean and nothing is missing in the kitchen. We really enjoyed the tips on things to do (the plastified map was a plus for us) in the area, particularly the swim hole (the one with the Ranch name in it was like our own private beach when we went). The area is spectacular in terms of landscapes, and the cottage is really perfect to cover it. Our kids enjoyed riding their bikes around the little town in the evening. Regarding the garden: very peaceful little gem full of colours. Thanks for a really nice stay!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, romantic getaway, families with young children.

We had a great time at the Painted Hills cottage. It was our son's 9th birthday so we went in order to have an opportunity to dig for fossils, which he loves. It is just under a 2 hour drive from Bend, so it was easy. There are 7 in our party, and a few dogs. The garden was great for the dogs to roam and sniff, they were in heaven! The garden was equally lovely for us (humans) to roam and sniff, the aroma's were great, the vegetation amazing, so many plants I've never seen or smelled! Next day we went to Fossil and dug up real fossils behind the high school. It was a "First" for us all and we had a great time, took home many treasures. The kitchen was great, we cooked up 2 great dinners, and the sleeping arrangements were perfect. I loved sleeping on the covered porch with the windows all open, listening to the rain. We will come again, next time we want to go to the Lucky Strike Mine and dig for Thunder Eggs. thanks for a great weekend, the Clarks and Eastwoods Bend OregonDid you find this review helpful? The cottage is a perfect spot for two couples to relax together. The house is well presented withtwo nice bed rooms separated by a very modern shower room designed also for people with disabilities. The sitting room and eating area is nicely set up and the kitchen has everything for a serious cooking get together. We ate lunches and breakfast in the lovely English cottage style garden. Mitchell is an authentic Western town, slightly rough but iconic !! And it is a great center to visit the Painted Hills about ten miles down the road, this is a wonder of the world. There are walks to viewing platforms and a great picnic area by the Parks Dept information booth. There are other longer walks nearer by and to drive the round to Twickenham on the John Day via the gravel road gives wonderful views and a great feeling of being far from the madding city!!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, people with disabilities, age 55+, romantic getaway.

My stay at the Painted Hills Vacation Rental was spectacular: the lush and diverse garden has hundreds of flowers in bloom in the spring and attracts birds from around the area, including a hummingbird that buzzed around the door of the house. The house was clean, charming, and had everything that we needed to cook, read books from their collection, learn about the area, answer work emails, or watch their collection of DVD's. We visited the Sutton Mountain, Pat's Cabin and Painted Hills proposed Wilderness areas that surround the Painted Hills National Monument and had a tremendous backcountry hiking experience. There are endless secret spots to visit that possess amazing solitude, hidden painted hills, wildlife and birds - we even stumbled across areas with fossilized Metasequoia trees (that we of course left undisturbed). Aruna was wonderful and helpful in so many ways. I'm already planning my next trip back to the area to stay at the Painted Hills Vacation Rental. Thank you so much for the amazing experience!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 1994
About the owner: We're a mother and daughter team, originally from Germany, and own the Painted Hills Vacation Rentals together. The Painted Hills Cottage used to be our own vacation home that we visited as much as possible when we were still living in Seattle, Washington. We just couldn't get enough of this amazing region, and finally decided to move here. We now live out in the boondocks on a nice piece of land a few miles behind the Painted Hills, and rent out the cottage and guest house in Mitchell to people like you who can appreciate this unspoiled place with all it's wildness and rugged beauty.
Why the Owner Chose Mitchell:
Eastern Oregon has much to offer for people who want to experience Mother Nature in her purest wildest form.
Each of the 3 units alone of the John Day River National Monument is worth a trip out here. The Painted Hills especially are very dear to us and are located only 15 minutes away by car. We pass them every day on our trip between our home and our vacation rental business in town and they still awe us every time. The Sheep Rock and Blue Basin are 40 minutes away, and though each of us has been their often, we still take every opportunity to go and hike there. There are not many places to stay around here for travelers and we're happy provide a great place for our guests.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The cozy Painted Hills Cottage is still very much like the time when we used to come here ourselves for vacation.
The walls are still adorned with the landscape paintings by my father, and the many art pieces that my family brought
home from various journeys to other countries. The lovely garden surrounding the property has been created by my
mother over many years and is an oasis of tranquility and beauty. We're happy to share this unusual place with
our guests and hope to see you here in the future.
