NEW 2011: We've installed a large parking lot that's perfect for drift boats and rafts! Cheerful yellow paint in the kitchen and hardwood laminate entries at both doors. Trinity River Adventure Inn's "Carriage House" is an historic carriage house from the Vitzthum homestead converted into a wonderful cabin. This is a neat, rustic cabin with 1BR/full bath/full kitchen, wood stove, captain's bed and full-sized couch as well as love seat in living room and it has standalone "Dragonfly" next to it, which can be rented only with the Carriage House and adds an extra bedroom.
Not all vacation rentals are alike. Our cabins are owned and maintained by us. If you need us, we are here for you. This is worth considering, because nothing is worse than having a problem and calling a long-distance property owner. We know, because it happens up here all the time.
The Carriage House is one of our four great cabins on 1 1/2 private acres off Steel Bridge Road near Douglas City. Cabins range from the romantic "Miner's Cabin" @ $125/night to a grand 3BR/2BA A frame with lots of sleeping options @ $275/night (one of the most spectacular views EVER from the River Loft). Rates drop with multiple night stays, but we have no minimum stay. Each cabin has its own feel and plenty of privacy, plus you can rent all of the cabins for a wedding, reunion or company gathering.
The Carriage House is all one level; perfect for strollers and wheelchairs. The deep front porch is excellent for fishing gear and waders. Raft, drift boat or kayak to your cabin.
Great fishing from your bank. Salmon hole, steelhead riffles. One of four cabins that can accommodate a large party, but each is well-separated from the others. No minimum stay.
Michael Caranci, FFF Certified Master Instructor with The Fly Shop in Redding, CA says:
"As a long time Trinity River angler and guide, and the Director of Outfitters for The Fly Shop in Redding, I've had the opportunity over the years to visit many of the different motels, lodges, and cabins along the Trinity River. For sheer seclusion, access, and cozy, comfortable accommodations, the cabins at the Trinity River Adventure Inn are certainly among the best."
The large, deep, covered back porch looks out on the Trinity River, which is accessed at the edge of the lawn (2 steps down from cabin to porch). It has a glass and wicker dining set for 4 plus many other seating options. There is a fog mister to cool down hot summer days and it's delightful for playing cards, reading or just watching the river go by.
The adjoining one room "Dragonfly" cabin may be rented with the Carriage, or not. It is only available to renters of the Carriage and has a double bed and whimsical dragonfly decor. There is a high-fenced, private dog yard between the Carriage and Dragonfly.
Friendly dogs can run free and have a ball playing in the river, which is famous for salmon, steelhead and trout. The entire interior of the cabin is solid cedar and there are many warm touches in the decor such as a wood stove (wood provided); horse collar mirror; leather couch and loveseat; oak dining set inside; wicker/glass dining set outside; and an antique oak secretary with a great light, perfect for tying flies. Bring your MP3/ipod! Stereo docking stations are in the cabin and include a patch cord to accommodate any MP3.

Why the Owner Chose Douglas City
Trinity County has the unbeatable combination of great natural beauty, incredible recreation opportunities, and it hasn't been overrun by tourists. People who have come here for twenty years remark at how little has changed. It is a spectacular place to explore.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin
Being on the river has to be one of the most relaxing things there is up here. Whether you fish, paddle, want to try the rope swing into the swimming hole, or just sit and watch the fish swim by, it is a wonderful escape to have a cabin right on the water.
Owner's Map of Douglas City
Steph Dutton is a world-renowned kayaker who paddled from Canada to Mexico, then paddled the Oregon coast again, in the winter. He also circumnavigated California's Channel Islands, often enduring thirty foot seas.
Heidi Tiura owned and operated several businesses before running away to sea and working on tug boats in Alaska, Washington and Oregon.
Steph and Heidi are both Coast Guard licensed masters (captains), and creators of Sanctuary Cruises on the Monterey Bay. They have been featured in numerous books and documentaries for their work with whales (including National Geographic's "Whale Attack," which was based on their Mother's Day 2004 whale watching cruise).
Now, they live on the upper Trinity River and their kayak adventures are of a tamer sort. When not rafting or kayaking with their dogs and guests, they can usually be found on their motorcycles, because Trinity County has some of the best roads in the world for riding bikes.
And if not riding their bikes, they're up at their Dunsmuir place, Alpine Ski & Fish Haus. For them, Dunsmuir is the Big City.

In a word: RELAXATION

Just spent a weekend at Trinity River Adventure Inn's Carriage House. My husband and I and our two dogs had the most wonderful, relaxing time. When we arrived there was a note from Heidi on the table, including her phone number, welcoming us and encouraging us to call for any assistance or questions...Awwwwww.... We immediately took a walk to the edge of the lawn to find our own private path to the Trinity River flowing only a few yards away. The dogs were in the water in less than 30 seconds! We love to stay in and cook our own meals wherever we are and we found everything we needed in the cheerful cabin kitchen to make dinner, which we enjoyed out on the patio. That evening my husband donned his waders and spent an hour or two fly fishing directly in front of the cabin. After breakfast the next morning we took a beautiful drive in surrounding Trinity County, before coming back to relax on the property for the afternoon. All of us took a dip in the river. I spent the afternoon in a chair at the rivers edge with a wine cooler and a couple of magazines while the dogs alternately swam in the river and lazed at my feet...a beautiful Kingfisher flew chattering and fishing his way up and down our stretch of the river and at one point I looked up to find 34 wild Canadian Geese floating on the water a few yards from me. When I finally surfaced from my reverie, I walked barefoot across the lawn to prepare a tri-tip and roasted vegetables, which we cooked on one of the two barbecues on the property...another dinner on the patio...flyfishing at dusk and relaxing evening in the cozy lamplight cabin. Too soon it was time to pack up and leave our weekend retreat. One of the reasons for our weekend trip was to conduct reconnaissance for a family trip for next Summer. I have already booked both the Carriage House and the neighboring Alpine Glow properties for 5 nights next Summer so that we and our dogs, kids, grandkids and parents can vacation on the Trinity River together.
Owner response:Nature lovers have rarely posted such a perfect and prolific description of the experience at the Carriage House. We loved the references to the birds (we also see osprey and bald eagles there); how our guests enjoyed cooking there and dining on the river porch; and of course fishing. We'll make double sure that they have as grand a time when they bring back the extended family in 2012!

Hospitality and tranquility

We stayed only one night but wished we stayed longer. The room was comfortable and quiet the freindley welcome we received upon arrival set the tone for a great stay. We loved the rope swing and our border collie was in heaven as he played. Toilet in shower was weird and no stove so we used the barbeque on the brick patio and the main house. Overall A+
Owner response:Most important, our guests had a nice time. Hospitality & tranquility are pretty darned nice descriptions. We love hearing the dogs have every bit as much fun as the humans! The Miner's Cabin does have its quirks, such as a shower and toilet in the same area (so the shower runs over closed toilet, as in some trailers and boats). Also, the cabin is a real, restored miner's cabin and there was no room for a full kitchen, so it only has a deep electric skillet, microwave and toaster oven, plus coffee maker. We try to make sure folks know about them with full descriptions and photos (and videos on our web site), but it's always hard for people to put it all together, plus not everyone takes the time to go to our web site. The BBQ patio is about a minute's walk away and is for all guests. It's located where it is safest, in this very vulnerable fire area.
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, pet owners.

Excellent! We went antiquing; it was great! Loved it so much we plan to bring the whole gang next time [and stay in all 4 cabins on over 1 acre]. Had a wonderful time checking out the area. One of the best parts has been that Charles and I were able to relax. No work, no pressure--just relax and have fun. Thanks again!

We had a wonderful stay in the Carriage House. It was great to be able to safely let our dog run around off-leash. The property was as described. When we arrived, we could not get the pilot light on for the stove, and Steph, one of the owners, came right away to get it started for us. We would, and will, recommend staying here. We enjoyed kayaking on Lewiston Lake, wine tasting, and hiking in the area.
Owner response:A lot of our guests are taken by the fun their dogs have here. It's really rewarding knowing they enjoyed their stay and got to run free for a while!

The Carriage House is a quaint cabin with all the essentials and is very dog friendly. The only thing the cabin lacked was entertainment ie: radio, TV. Come prepared with a good book, iPod and/or computer to play movies if you wish to have entertainment in the evenings. The cabin is listed as having 2 bedrooms, but it only has one. This wasn't a problem for us, but there is a single bed in the corner of the living room to comfortably accomodate a 3rd sleeper. We arrived to a warm fire burning in the wood stove creating a very cozy atmosphere on the first night. And there was plenty of wood to burn for the remaining nights of our stay. The cabin was clean and had all essential kitchen and bathroom necessities to make our stay easy and stress free. The back yard has a huge lawn that leads down to the river. It was a great place for our dog to get exercise. Unfortunately the flow of the river was too strong for the dog to play in the water. Maybe later in summer the flow is more conducive for water play for both dogs and their humans. Be careful of tics in the tall grass leading to the river. Both dog and human had hitchhikers. There is great kayaking on the river from beginner to experienced paddlers and your dog can even join you for your paddle. Hiking is another favorite past time that offers many different trails within a short drive from the cabin. During our stay it rained a couple days, so we explored Weaverville and found the Red Cafe to be friendly and charming (and it has wireless). There is a great park along a creek and county museum/historical society that shows what life was like during the gold mining days. The historical society was closed the day we visited, but the volunteers were happy to open the exhibits just for us and offered a personal tour. The owners are very knowledgeable of the surrounding area and will go out of their way to take you kayaking or give you advice and options of how to explore this scenic paradise. It was a great getaway and a great value. I recommend this cabin for couples or small families!
Owner response:Our guest forgot there is Dragonfly, a stand-alone cabin next to the Carriage House, that only rents with it if a 2nd bedroom is required. It's a nice deal, since people who don't need a 2nd bedroom don't have to pay for it. Ticks throughout California are a concern, since they now may carry Lyme disease. We suggest using a Deet-based bug spray when outdoors anywhere and carry a very good dog tick collar at cost for canine guests. We have an interesting library in each cabin; in fact, these guests borrowed a book to finish after going home. We think TV is over-rated and prefer listening to birds sing and the river rippling past. The museum people opening for this couple are such a great example of Trinity County hospitality. It's like going back several decades to a time when people were more generous and took the time to show you something neat. It's why we live here.
