"As a long time Trinity River angler and guide, and the Director of Outfitters for The Fly Shop in Redding, I've had the opportunity over the years to visit many of the different motels, lodges, and cabins along the Trinity River. For sheer seclusion, access, and cozy, comfortable accommodations, the cabins at the Trinity River Adventure Inn are certainly among the best."
NEW! See our YouTube videos of all of our Steel Bridge river cabins, as well as our 3BR/2BA Bucktail cabin Sow's Ear, by clicking on LINKS TO MORE INFORMATION at the bottom of this page. That will take you to our web site, which is filled with pictures and information. Fall 2009 we will add "Trout" near our Bucktail cabin; it's a really neat little log cabin in a sylvan setting right on the Trinity River.
Trinity River Adventure Inn's "Carriage House" is an historic carriage house from the Vitzum homestead converted into a wonderful cabin. It's a rustic 1BR/full bath/full kitchen, with standalone "Dragonfly" next to it, which can be rented only with the Carriage House and adds an extra bedroom. The Carriage House is one of our four great cabins on 1 1/2 private acres off Steel Bridge Road near Douglas City. Cabins range from the romantic "Miner's Cabin" @ $115/night to a grand 2BR/2BA A frame with lots of sleeping options @ $250/night. Each cabin has its own feel and plenty of privacy, plus you can rent all of the cabins for a wedding, reunion or company gathering. Check our web site (link below) for a lot more great pictures and details!
The Carriage House is all one level; perfect for strollers and wheelchairs. The deep front porch is excellent for fishing gear and waders. Raft, drift boat or kayak to your door.
The large, deep, covered back porch looks out on the Trinity River, which is accessed at the edge of the lawn (2 steps down from cabin to porch). It has a glass and wicker dining set for 4 plus many other seating options. There is a fog mister to cool down hot summer days and it's delightful for playing cards, reading or just watching the river go by.
The adjoining one room "Dragonfly" cabin may be rented with the Carriage, or not. It is only available to renters of the Carriage and has a double bed and whimsical dragonfly decor. There is a high-fenced, private dog yard between the Carriage and Dragonfly.
Friendly dogs can run free and have a ball playing in the river, which is famous for salmon, steelhead and trout. The entire interior is solid cedar and there are many warm touches in the decor such as a wood stove; horse collar mirror; leather couch and loveseat; oak dining set inside; and wicker/glass dining set outside. Bring your MP3/ipod! Stereo docking stations are in the cabin and include a patch cord to accommodate any MP3.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2005
Steph Dutton is a world-renowned kayaker who paddled from Canada to Mexico, then paddled the Oregon coast again, in the winter. He also circumnavigated California's Channel Islands, often enduring thirty foot seas. Heidi Tiura owned and ran several businesses before running away to sea and working on tug boats in Alaska, Washington and Oregon. Steph and Heidi are both Coast Guard licensed masters, and creators of Sanctuary Cruises on the Monterey Bay. They have been featured in numerous books and documentaries for their work with whales (including National Geographic's "Whale Attack," which was based on their Mother's Day 2004 whale watching cruise).
Now, they live on the upper Trinity River and their kayak adventures are of a tamer sort. When not rafting or kayaking with their dogs and guests, they can usually be found on their motorcycles, because Trinity County has some of the best roads in the world for riding bikes.
Why the Owner Chose Douglas City
Trinity County has the unbeatable combination of great natural beauty, incredible recreation opportunities, and it hasn't been overrun by tourists. People who have come here for twenty years remark at how little has changed. It is a spectacular place to explore.
The Unique Benefits of this Cabins
Being on the river has to be one of the most relaxing things there is up here. Whether you fish, paddle, want to try the rope swing into the swimming hole, or just sit and watch the fish swim by, it is a wonderful escape to have a cabin right on the water.

"We really enjoyed this upper section [of the Trinity River] and our stay here! Lovely cabin [Carriage House]..."

"My wife Kerry and I, along with some friends, were fortunate enough to spend a couple of nights recently staying at the Trinity River Adventure Inn, specifically the Alpen Glow and Carriage House cabins. We enjoyed our stay immensely, spending much of our time simply relaxing and enjoying the beautiful scenery and tranquility of the Trinity River flowing just past the back deck. Of course, we made sure to wet a line, too, with some great success in the productive steelhead runs accessible only from the Trinity River Adventure Inn cabins. As a long time Trinity River angler and guide, and the Director of Outfitters for The Fly Shop in Redding, I've had the opportunity over the years to visit many of the different motels, lodges, and cabins along the Trinity River. For sheer seclusion, access, and cozy, comfortable accommodations, the cabins at the Trinity River Adventure Inn are certainly among the best. Steph's handiwork and painstaking care of the cabins is apparent, while I'm still savoring Heidi's crab dip on my taste buds weeks after the trip!" "You two were such terrific hosts-enjoyable and down to earth. [Alpen Glow] was lovely. [The raft trip] was very enjoyable; loved the berries. Write that cookbook!"

Superb accommodations! Delicious food. This is heaven. Just to let you know we had a wonderful time with you and our stay at the Carriage House for our 25th Anniversary. You made us so comfortable, just like we were at home, but better. Even though there were fires in the area, it is still a gorgeous place. Steph, the raft ride was a blast; we had never been on a raft ride before. I couldn't have enjoyed my first ride better. Gary caught three trout, one a German brown; it was so pretty, with bright orange dots on its side. You suggested we go to a local restaurant La Grange which turn out to be very good. Not as good as your cooking though, Heidi. I still would like your recipe for that pork tenderloin; it was delicious. We could have sat and listened to all your adventures all night. Our dog Kacie misses Bisco and Scupper her two new friends. We give you a 6+++ star rating. We will drive 5 hours to stay with you again sometime; I do hope soon. Best be with you."

"THANK YOU for a wonderful location for our family reunion [all of the Steel Bridge cabins]. My favorite part of the trip was the kayaking; thanks for making this possible. We'll sort through our pictures and send you some on the rope swing; it was the highlight of the location for the kids. I would definitely recommend this location to others; it was convenient, comfortable, well-equipped, and beautiful. THANKS AGAIN!"

Accommodations: wonderful. Peace & quiet: Excellent. We named the hummingbirds. The loud one is "Turbo" and the female is "Stealth." Oh, and "Chilli" and "Slug," our two morning slug visitors. Thanks again; we'll see you again for sure.

The Carriage House was very comfortable; authentic cabin feel. Very quiet, felt away from it all. [Meals were] excellent! Already making plans [to return].

[All of our guests' comments are posted on our web site, too. The ones we have posted here were received befor we listed the Carriage House on vrbo.] The Carriage House was more than we had hoped for; the river in the backyard is awesome. We haven't seen that many different types of birds all in one place in a while. I caught 5 trout at Stuarts Fork on Saturday in about 45 minutes; I released all of them. We'll see you in June.
