Wonderful time at the cottage

Guest: Robin (Oregon)
Date of Stay: 03/20/12 Review Submitted: 05/02/12

My husband and I stayed a week at Jack's cottage and had a wonderful time. It was near the metro which we walked to everyday. The walk to the metro felt very safe. The cottage was lovely, Jack was awesome, and we had a wonderful time. If we were ever back in the area we would stay at this place again.

Stayed at the property during the entire month of January 2012. Jack was extremely helpful throughout my visit. The location is very nice and only a short walk to the Metro and Old Town. The Cottage was updated, neat and perfect for my needs. The Cottage is highly recommended and I would absolutely stay at this location again.

We stayed at the cottage the last week of October. Perfect weather, nice 15 min walk to the metro in the am. Very clean and well appointed. Perfect for my husband and I and our 13 year old daughter. Would have been tight quarters for a family of four, but perfect for 2 or 3! Great little kitchen, eating area, patio and laundry facilities. Jack's back yard is beautiful! The neighborhood is very nice and we felt safe walking back from the metro even after dark. Thank you Jack!

I usually stay in a hotel when in the DC area. Because of an extended stay I decided to try a rental instead. Jack's place met all my expectations. It is well located and comfortable. Jack was a great host who responded to all my request and at the same time was not intrusive. I really enjoyed having my coffee in the garden each morning. A beautiful peaceful setting. I look forward to staying here again.

Back home and very grateful for a delightful stay at your cottage. I miss Nyla greeting me on the patio and visiting with me while I ate breakfast. The conveniences you provided were remarkable ... coffee, cinnamon bread, flavored water, bathroom essentials including an endless supply of shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, right down to Q-tips and cotton balls. We grilled steak and invited our daughter's family including their 6-day-old baby for supper on Sunday on your beautiful patio. How amazing that we as guests at your property were able to entertain as if we lived there! Thank you so, so much for everything.

The Cottage

Guest: Nancy (Monterey, California)
Date of Stay: 05/21/11 Review Submitted: 06/02/11

Although we found the cottage a bit "cozy" for four adults, we nevertheless had a wonderful time there! Jack is a most gracious host and we loved Nyla! The Cottage is well appointed and has everything you will need for your visit. It is a short walk to the Metro station and the free Trolley to King Street. A large and very nice grocery store is close (less than five minutes). We especially enjoyed the patio area where we ate many meals and enjoyed the beautifully landscaped yard as we enjoyed cocktails in the evening!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND "THE COTTAGE"!!!!

My husband & I just got home from a week stay from the Cottage and loved everything about it. Jack is SO helpful & friendly and we loved Nyla! The location of this cottage is in an extremely nice neighborhood, everyone was so friendly! I didn't realize how close this location is to Old Town. Drive time is prob 5 min or less! I HIGHLY recommend going to King Street and just walking the streets for food or shopping, my favorite was the Antique shopping! We ate mostly at The Warehouse on King Street and the food was consistently delicious! In Old Town there is SO much history there, you could prob spend an entire day just learning about the Christ Church, Gadsbry Tavern, the Carlyle estate, etc.. We had SUCH a wonderful experience, I've already booked us to stay next year! Without a shadow of a doubt I highly recommend staying at the the Cottage! THANK YOU : )

Wonderful!

Our first impression of "Jack's Getaway" was...."Wow...this is so beautiful!" Jack has done such a wonderful job of presenting his cottage, in the best way imaginable! We couldn't have been more pleased with the accomodations, the location and our host. Jack made sure that we had everything that we might need & then some! He even baked delicious goodies for us, several times....how wonderful is that?! Jack made us feel welcome & played a part in our "Grand Adventure"...we took home some wonderful memories!(Our son ran into friends from his high school band/Rowing Crew-Sebastian River High School/Florida-as we came out of the White House!....talk about a small world!) We highly recommend "Jack's Getaway"...you will love it & want to return!.....thank you, Jack!

Owner response:We 'try' our BEST to make sure EVERYONE is treated as if they are our first guest. Our promise is...as long as we ENJOY doing what we do, we will do it with passion. When the passion stops, we will no longer be in the business. Nice people, like this family, makes our job a little easier. As long as you let us know what you need, we will try to accommodate you. Thanks for the nice review, and...we look forward to having you and your family stay at the Cottage again.

I arrived to a fully decorated Christmas wonderland. I found it to be cheap and cheerful, exactly what most people need in terms of proportion. The location was also very good, near to Del Ray and King Street, what a lovely place in America. The owner was very hospitable and helpful, yet nor overbearing.

Awesome! The cottage is awesome, the neighborhood is awesome, Jack is awesome and of course Nyla is awesome. We stayed 12 nights at the cottage while visiting Washington DC and Alexandria and we loved it! We are planning on returning for another visit and would not think of staying anywhere else than the cottage. Cute, clean, great location, beautiful yard, only to mention a few things! If you choose to stay at the cottage you won't be disappointed. Jack is the best. He takes great pride in his rental and is so very helpful. The cottage has everything you need and things that you didn't even think you needed!

Feel at home while on vacation

Guest: Marcia (Ashland, OR)
Date of Stay: 09/18/10 Review Submitted: 10/02/10

My husband and I recently (Sept., 2010) stayed at the cottage for a week of sightseeing and relaxing. It fit our expectations perfectly. Jack was as accommodating as everyone else has said, going above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. Having our own kitchen, patio, back yard and laundry really made us feel at home. The walk to the Metro in the morning was easy, but a couple of times we took the Dash Bus back, after a long hot day of walking in D.C. If you don't have a car, I'd recommend that you visit the Transit Shop near the King St. Metro on your first day to figure out the bus/metro system and possibly purchase a Smart Card or weekly pass. We would definitely recommend this vacation spot and would stay there again. Jack is a real gem of a host!

This was our first time to use VRBO and were a little unsure of how it would all work out. Now, we are sold! Jack was such a gracious host and the accommodations felt like home. We had 5 people in the cottage and while it was a little tight at times--having 5 people sharing a any space can be tight and just goes with the territory on vacations, at least for us anyway--it was great. The backyard gardens are just beautiful and the neighborhood is very quiet in the evenings. The short walk (about 7/10 of a mile each way) is a nice warm up for the manymiles you will walk if you are visiting DC. We would definitely stay at the Cottage again! Thank You, Jack!

A Great Place to make your stay special

Guest: Cathy D. (San Antonio, TX)
Date of Stay: 08/01/10 Review Submitted: 08/09/10

We found that all our expectations were met for a great stay near Old Town Alexandria and Washington DC. Not only is Jack a wonderful host, but his dog, Nyla was a nice bonus as well. The apartment features a superb kitchen with access to the garden, which for me, took the rental over the top. Sitting out there reading the paper or my book with a cup of tea couldn't have been more pleasant. We enjoyed the easy walks to the Metro and Old Town. One of the things one often doesn't often consider is the overall locale when making a review. This neighborhood setting is one of the nicest in which we have stayed. Don't hesitate to consider this when you need a place in the Washington DC metro area. I offer this without any reservations.

What a great place to stay with such wonderful hosts! My husband and I stayed at The Cottage 7/11/10-7/18/10. I'm so glad I booked early. The previous reviews were right, The Cottage has everything to be a home away from home. Located in a beautiful, quiet residential neighborhood, it is very clean with a full kitchen stocked with staples, full sized washer/dryer stocked with supplies, lovely backyard/garden, patio w/grill, Directv, good internet access, 20 min normal speed walk to King Street Station. If I have family or friends traveling to the area, I will insist they stay at The Cottage. Jack and Nyla are amazing hosts. So very helpful, kind and available without being at all intrusive. The Cottage is multi-level, like homes typical of the area, so being able to navigate stairs is a must. Nearby recommended eats: King Street Blues (1/2 block from King St) and Pines of Torrance (on King Street). Nearby recommended shops: The Christmas Attic, Today's Cargo, Irish Walk, The Book Bank, Potomac Bead Co. Nearby recommended attractions (other than American history/civic/military related): Medieval Madness, AMC movie theaters close to Eisenhower Metro. Jack and Nyla, thank you so much for sharing your cottage with us. We both look forward to visiting you and the area again! AS & KS, Roy, UT

The cottage was a perfect stay for us on our trip to Washington D.C. The property is located in a quiet neighborhood with access to everything in the area. It was a 15 minute pleasant walk to the King St. metro station. The property is in excellent condition with all the amenities. We were able to enjoy the peaceful backyard after a busy day in the city. We even explored the town of Alexandria. Jack is a perfect host and we would certainly stay here again.

Fantastic Stay at the Cottage!

Guest: Tarassa S. (St. Louis, MO)
Date of Stay: 06/19/10 Review Submitted: 06/27/10

We chose to stay at the cottage for a week-long vacation to DC in June 2010. The cottage was exceptional! Some highpoints: - The cottage has a flat screen TV on both floors with DVD players and Direct TV, so the kids could watch their shows in the evening while in bed and we could watch TV upstairs in our bed. - The Aerobed we used for the kids worked great and was a breeze to set up each night. - The kitchen was fully appointed and worked well for us each morning for breakfast. Jack also lets you use the grill, and we had a cook-out one night. - Jack's landscaping is beautiful - flowers and fountains. The fenced-in back yard was great for our boys to play in. - The location was fantastic- right near old town Alexandria and the Masonic Temple. To get to DC, we drove to the Huntington Metro station (which has a big parking garage) and metro'ed in from there. The unit also has great access to 495. - Having two levels worked great for us - the kids could play on the lower level and we could be upstairs! - Jack has a designated free parking spot for guests, a rare treat in the DC area! - The neighborhood is quiet and residential - and the homes are fantastic to look at! Lots of different architecture and landscaping in the neighborhood. It is a great place to stroll around on a cool evening! - Last, but not least, the owner Jack was fantastic! We enjoyed talking to him about all of his gardens and the improvements he is making to the house. We also enjoyed meeting his sweet dog Nyla! They made us feel very welcome! I have traveled to DC many times and stayed in a wide variety of hotels. This cottage beats all of them by far - I HIGHLY recommend staying here, and we will the next time we take a family vacation to DC!

My husband and I stayed June 2010 for our Washington DC vacation and absolutely loved it! It was fairly close to the Metro, a great location, very safe. We walked home from the Metro at 10:30p one night and were very comfortable with our surroundings. Jack was very helpful and friendly! The BBQ grill, patio and full kitchen were fantastic amenities after a long day of sightseeing. The place was clean and the landscaping is georgeous. I highly recommend the cottage to anyone visiting the area!!

As a Crhistmas present to my husband, we spent 3 nights at the cottage so we could tour Washington, DC. We couldn't have asked for a more comfortable location. Near the Metro, near the supermarket. During the reservation process, Jack was quick and informative. During our stay, Jack was equally accommodating. And to have the special addition of Nyla to throw a ball to and pet made us feel right at home!

We traveled to Alexandria with our 7 year old son to do some sightseeing in Washington DC. The Cottage is a wonderful alternative to a hotel room, especially when traveling with a small child. Jack was a great host, and everything was clean & well-stocked as promised. It was nice to get up & make coffee & breakfast in the am, without having to run out the door, and enjoy the lovely patio & yard. Old Town was an added bonus, we enjoyed some wonderful meals there! A bit small, but a great value in a lovely setting.

What an Amazing Trip

Date of Stay: 03/15/10 Review Submitted: 04/02/10

Coming all the way from AZ, we knew DC (and Alexandria) would be a whole different world and boy were we right !!!! Let me start with Jack's Cottage, which was absolutely perfect :) We stayed a week at the cottage and anything that we could have needed was provided there. The cottage is super nice with an really modern and updated kitchen (however we still couldnt resist eating out everyday). The Metro is only about a 15 minute walk which we found to be great because we got a chance to see all the beautiful homes in Jack's area. It took us less then a day to figure out the Metro. Instead of paying $7.80 a day, I would recommend you buy the week pass - its cheaper in the end ....At night we would call a cab to go to downtown King St and it was about $10 (with tip). Alexandria as well as Washington DC were absolutely amazing. The people, the culture, the architecture, the never ending-always having something to do and the food :) I would absolutely recommend Alex/DC to anybody who may be thinking about going. Specifically, I would recommend the Cottage for anybody who is looking for a quaint, private, clean, convenient, safe, and affordable place to stay while in the Alexandria/DC area !!! Final Thoughts BRING GOOD SNEAKERS because you'll be doing TONS of walking Dont let the Metro scare you. Once you get the hang of it--its great!! Security, Patrol, and Police are absolutely everywhere...We felt very safe while in the District (and on the Metro) Jack- Thanks for the great place to stay. The Cottage was beautiful and we really did have a great time staying for the week. Four Thumbs Up !!!!!!!

Charming Cottage and Charming Host

Guest: K_and_R (South Carolina, USA)
Date of Stay: 03/08/10 Review Submitted: 05/22/10

We stayed at Jack's charming cottage in the early spring of 2010. One of the main reasons we selected the location was for the garden. We were looking for a private outdoor location to have our handfasting. Upon arrival on Monday, We let Jack know we intended to make use of his garden for our ceremony with our witness and officiant on Wednesday. The gardener was already scheduled to be there Wednesday afternoon; but Jack went out of his way without any prompting on our part to have the garden sorted out on Tuesday afternoon in time for our Wednesday morning ceremony. After the ceremony, we found a bottle of bubbly in the foyer with a note wishing us well. We're looking forward to going back for one (or more) of our milestone anniversaries. Jack's a great host, very good at anticipating every little thing but never intrusive. It was a great place to get handfasted and to honeymoon.

The cottage is a gem! Jack has considered everything to make this home cozy, warm and inviting. My Mom and I stayed here for a week and loved the fact that the bed can be two twins. The bathroom is comfortable and the kitchen is wonderful! What a treat to stay in such a wonderful neighborhood with a phenominal host. Jack did everything to make our stay so comfortable and wonderful - the metro is not far away and it's great to have a car in DC to get into the countryside. We highly recommend Jack to be your wonderful host when you visit DC. It was also nice to have such a peaceful cottage to return to after a day of sightseeing - often full of people - and here you have the peace of the cottage to return to. The backyard is perfect and we enjoyed having a washer/dryer available.

I would rate this experience as a definate positive! Jack has gone out of his way to provde guests with a delightful stay at his cottage. I was a bit apprehensive since we were a family of four. It was snug, but the positives certainly outwieghed the negatives of space. The full kitchen, the full size laundry, and an oasis for a backyard make this a retreat of choice!

My wife and I along with our two small children stayed at "The Cottage" from July 18th to July 25th. We were new to the VRBO website and were unsure of what to expect. It, by far, exceeded our expectations. "The Cottage" was tidy and meticulously clean. As advertised it contained a full size kitchen for preparing all of our meals, a patio for our evening cookouts, and a detached laundry room that was left unlocked whenver we wanted to do a load of laundry or two. The owner of "The Cottage", Jack, went above and beyond on any request that was asked and truly mae our stay at "The Cottage" a delight.

This was our first family visit to the Washington DC area. We were grateful for the relaxing private back yard that we came home to each evening to unwind. Jack was helpful in many ways from having maps and brochures in our cottage to help us navigate the area, to sending items back to us that we had forgotten upon leaving. The cottage was cozy, immaculate, and conveniently located. We wish we had brought our bicycles as it would have been easy to keep them in the back yard. We enjoyed the backyard immensely and had fun watching the baby robins make their first flight from the nest. We visited with some of the neighbors and found all of them to be very friendly and welcoming. We have rented properties from VRBO in the past and once again were very satisifed with our decision.

My wife and I were very impressed with the cottage. This place is very clean and neat. The kitchen has everything you will need to prepare meals. The landscaping is beautiful. The weber BBQ grill out on the patio is in excellent condition. I cannot say enough about our host, Jack. He is an excellent host. Get ready to be spoiled at the cottage! The King and Braddock Street metro stations are about 3/4 miles from the cottage, so prepare to walk a bit. We felt very safe walking to the metro station in this upscale neighborhood. We rented a car to get around town. Parking in front of the cottage was never a problem for our entire stay. We highly recommend this property as it is an excellent value for vacation or a short get-a-way.

The title says it all. This is a convenient spot in Alexandria--parking right out front of the home every time. I was traveling with two little ones, so we used the gorgeous yard like an extra room. We grilled out and took meals on the patio several times. My toddler loved exploring the grounds as well. Upscale and safe neighborhood. We had a great time in the area, making it to the National Zoo, USS Barry, National Cathedral, National Arboretum, National Botanic Garden, Mt. Vernon . . . all very kid-friendly outings. Vacations in DC can be cheap since so many attractions are free! The park around the corner from the house was fabulous--had toddler and elementary play areas and a sand pit with toys. What truly makes this different from so many other rental properties is the owner. He is service-oriented and friendly, and was interested in making our stay wonderful. Because he is right next door, we were able to call on him with questions. Unlike other properties where you are dealing with an absentee owner or a rental company, here you have a personal touch. The description is accurate--the cottage is tidy and updated, and every amenity imaginable can be found. And let's face it, the price cannot be beat. I would recommend this place to anyone. . . unless you are booking the same week as my return ;)

Old Town Alexandria is a charming and pleasant place to stay with many amenities. DC is easily reached from the two Metro rail stations. Jack's Cottage is a joy to come home to in the evening after many hours of sight seeing. It is in a quiet neighbourhood, is beautifully fitted out and most comfortable. Jack was wonderful, most personable and always available for advice and help. The Cottage receives a very strong reccommendation from us. Thank you once again Jack

Jack sure made our first trip to DC memorable. We loved the BBQ especially in the heat and it was great being able to make use of the patio area and not heat up the kitchen. The location is close enough to walk to the Metro at King Street which made it convenient so you didn't need to have a car. Look forward to returning again in the future, but not in the HUMID months! Thanks again, Jack & Nyla.

We have just returned home to Michigan and the cottage is everything Jack says it is and more. The neighborhood is beautiful and friendly. The house is great and elegant. Everything looks new. Our family of 4 would get up each morning, have breakfast at the cottage then head to the subway which took us to a short walk to the Capital. Usually we would be delayed because someone walking their dog would stop and talk to us about the area. There are so many friendly people in Old Town Alexandria. The walk to the subway is set in a very neat, clean, safe, up-scale neighborhood. Travel time to and back from the Washington Monument is about 20 minutes total. I could not imagine a nicer way to see Washington DC and areas around it. Jack is such an accommodating and gracious host. He is always helpful like a concierge but more like a friend. We wanted to stay an extra day but the cottage was spoken for. Jack was able to get us a hotel room nearby for the extra night. I had called for hours and everyone told us there was nothing available in the DC area. We stayed at a very elegant local up-scale hotel for one night. The price was three times what Jack charged us per night and the accomidations were equal at best with no kitchen. I can't say enough about the wonderful time we had at Jack's cottage. We are already talking to Jack about returning in the fall of 2010. This time we will stay longer and relax at home more. Thank you so very much Jack. We now tell our friends that we have a friend in the DC area.

This is a terrific space - it's meticulously clean, beautifully decorated and the kitchen has every thing you could want. A huge bonus is the georgeous back yard with patio. The neighborhood is beautiful and the location couldn't be better for sighseeing - just minutes from Washington DC and a short drive to many other area attractions.

My husband and I were very satisfied with our stay at this property. Jack is a great host and goes out of his way to accommodate his guests. We never had a problem with parking and found the walk to the metro just right. Truly a home away from home. FYI-there is a free trolley that runs along King Street where many local shops and restaurants are. Jack- thanks for a great stay. We hope to be back again.

Dear Jack, Donna and I want to thank you for all the kindness and hospitality you showed us on our recent trip to Washington DC. Your cottage is a wonderful place to say and the best value we've found in temporary accommodations in the DC area...ever. We have traveled the US extensively throughout our careers and prefer vacation rentals to hotel accommodations. We've never experienced as warm, comfortable and well appointed space as your cottage. We actually looked forward to returning each night and preparing meals in the gourmet kitchen. The Alexandria location was convenient for travel up to DC and Maryland and down to Fairfax and Springfield for business meetings. BTW, Old town Alexandria is a great place for shopping and entertainment as well. We encourage visitors spend some time on King and Washington Streets to really get a feel for Alexandria. Be sure to visit the cool art shops at the Torpedo factory! Thank you for everything! The cottage is so nice, we hope that it will be available for our next trip to the DC area. Sincerely, Dale Dimmick Dimmick Photography The Portrait Artists

We have unconventional wisdom for Washington DC: Take your car! We had safe parking in front of Jack's and found relatively easy parking in Old Town, the National Arboretum, Georgetown, and the heart of DC (at sundown - the best time to see the monuments!) We also took our bikes which we stored in Jack's locked back yard, out of the rain. Great place for biking -- Mount Vernon Bike Trail, Old Town Alexandria --and we also biked to the Metro stop. You lock your bikes there or you may take them on the Metro during non rush hours. We liked Jack, the cottage, the neighborhood and the neighbors. Another thing we would recommend is the segway tour, 70 bucks a person for a three hour tour, but the coolest way to get an overview of DC (We are senior citizens and had never segwayed before!}. Both Jack's cottage and the segway tour are hot items so you best book ahead.

My husband and I have stayed at VRBO properties for years and Jack's Place ranks at the top. Cozy, clean, and comfortable. Stylish with a touch of whimsy. We were only able to stay 3 days but would have liked to stay longer. Will stay again on any return trips. Highly recommend! Five stars!! Jack goes above and beyond to make you feel at home away from home.

We really enjoyed our stay at the cottage. My family and I stayed for 2 weeks. It became our little home away from home. It is in a great location. Jack was very sweet and hospitable and always tended to our needs. I would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone visiting the area.

Wonderful place to stay, neat and clean, a safe convenient neighborhood, and best of all, a friendly owner who will be your personal concierge, helping with all your needs. The bedroom area is small, but very comfortable and the kitchen and bathroom are great.

What a gem of a cottage! Nestled in an up-scale neighborhood, a short distance from the metro, you will find a great place to come home to. Whether you are traveling on business or a whirl-wind vacation, one thing for sure, you will be treated like royalty. The gardens are beautifully landscaped providing you with a peaceful escape from the hussle and bussle of your day. The gourmet kitchen has been newly updated and is fully equiped. The beds are very comfortable as well. Jack goes out of his way to make you feel at home. He is very accomodating and redefines the term "Southern hospitality". This is a charming cottage and we look forward to our next vacation here.
