Location: Mahahual, Quintana Roo, Yucatan, Mayan Riviera, Mexico (Four and a Half Hours South of Cancun by Car)
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6)
Keywords: House
Casa Uvero is a comfortable, three-bedroom home, located 10 kilometers south of the town of Mahahual. It is completely tiled with spacious, arched balconies and porches, and the rooftop terrace offers panoramic Caribbean views from your hammocks. It is 200 feet from the beach.
The main living space is on the second floor bringing partial ocean views and continuous tropical breezes. Each bedroom has its own full bathroom and separate entrance, making it perfect for three couples to share. All rooms have air-conditioning (when the generator is on) ceiling fans, and screen doors and windows. Wireless internet is included.
The main living space includes a living room, kitchen, small library corner, large covered porch, master bedroom, and access to the rooftop terrace. The kitchen is fully equipped with service for eight. Includes a full-size refrigerator with freezer, stove and oven. The kitchen includes plenty of utensils, knives and pans for most cooking projects. Two French presses and a coffee grinder are available to make coffee. The island counter seats six. The dining table on the outdoor patio also seats six. Two more spacious bedrooms are on the lower level, sharing a wide, covered patio.
The house is in a small walled community and the Homeowner’s Association provides security. Two bicycles are available at the house that can be used for biking along the beach road.
The house is “off-the-grid” meaning it is not connected to electric lines or a public water system. Electricity comes from solar panels and a generator. The air conditioning is only available when the generator is on which will be about three hours a day. We ask that all guests conserve electricity, and the system cannot support any heat-producing appliances (coffee-maker, hair dryer, microwave). The water source is rainwater in the underground cistern, and water-use should be mindful of conservation. Bottled water on a stand is available for drinking.
Diving, Fishing & Snorkeling:
The offshore reef system is part the Mesoamerican reef that runs from Mexico to Honduras, the second largest reef system in the world. This makes for spectacular scuba diving, snorkeling and fishing. Casa Uvero is a perfect house for divers, located just 6 km from the local dive shop. We enjoy diving with Dreamtime Diving. A special diving excursion is to book a trip to Chinchorro banks.
The Town:
Mahahual (sometimes called Majahual) is the closest town and provides basic grocery shopping, restaurants, diving and other excursions. It was a sleepy little fishing village until the cruise ships discovered it in 2000. The cruise ship activity brought a level of prosperity to the community, restaurants, and shops. In August 2007, Hurricane Dean, a category five hurricane, hit the town head-on and devastated the community, destroying the cruise ship dock and the town’s economy. The people have been working very hard since then to rebuild their homes, businesses, and community. A new malecon was built for walking along the beach in downtown where there are a number of beachside restaurants specializing in fresh fish and margaritas. The locals are preparing to welcome the cruise ships and their customers to their businesses again in the fall of 2008.

Had a great time!!

Stayed here a few years back and had a relaxing time. Really enjoyed the use of kayaks and the caretakers who lived a few minutes down the street. Also got a chance to check out Cenote Azul and Lago Bacalar which was pretty cool. A quick drive into town (and along the way) gives plenty of food and drink options as well as a pretty descent night life. So if you're sick of the resort scene like me then this is a great option! The only thing I might do differently is fly into Chetumal rather than Cancun.... it's a long drive although very duable.
