We traveled to Portland for a family reunion along with our son's 30th birthday party and the house was perfect for what we needed in a vacation home. In a quintessential Portland location to get the feel and vibe of the city, lots of elbow room for everyone to have their own space, and the owner could not have been more accommodating with any requests we had. The furniture is relaxed and casual which was perfect for our get together (the last thing one wants is to worry about precious, fine surroundings on vacation). Our only suggestion might be the addition of mattress pads to the beds allowing a more comfortable nights sleep. Great price for the location and the square footage...have a great trip!

After many uncertain moments regarding the validity of this rental we ended up staying in the overpriced, well located, sizeable Hawthorne House in Portland. Photos are unrepresentative; the house is large, old and many things are funky (water leaking onto the floor when taking a shower, downstairs bedroom door does not close unless you close the hook on the inside, the pots and pans cabinet is an old cabinet with very questionable dirty shelving, the upstairs toilet runs slightly most of the time causing water noise in the basement, the basement and downstairs beds are of very poor quality, we had to add foam and padding to improve sleeping experience) It appears that furniture was bought at garage sales, beds, couches are poor quality and bedding is minimal (no sheets for the futon, no extra sheets in case of an accident). There are not enough towels (I expect at least two per person). Communication with the owner is very poor: No paypal account, so you have to send a check, full payment 30 days before coming, plus cleaning fee. Email contact was poor, several times I did not get a response and had to call to get an answer from the owner, phone was disconnected twice, making me wonder if the owner was running with my money. Not the way to do business with strangers and instill a sense of security. We were required to do laundry, dishes and wipe the stove before leaving. There were no instructions for closing the house when we left. I found out the owner lives next door, but he did not come out to say this; he watches over what happens, which is fine. The back yard smells and holds cat litter, the barbeque is a funky adaptation of a broken gas barbeque now only using briquets. Do I need to go on? We made it work, but if we had rented $100.- rooms in a hotel for all of us, we would have spend the same, would not have had any cleaning to do, and certainly would have had enough towels and sheets, plus could have paid with credit card and racked up a lot of miles. I would not recommend this property, mostly because of the owner's deception and excuses over his inadequate way of doing business.

Hawthorne House is comfortable and spacious with the period charm you'd expect in a 1906 home. Restaurants and boutiques are all within walking distance as is the historic Bagdad Theater. We especially enjoyed the Salmon Eggs Benedict at the Hawthorne Cafe. The neighborhood was very family friendly and quiet. Lots of bicyclists require careful driving. Overall, a great visit.

My daughter got married in Portland over the summer and I needed a place to accommodate family members traveling from the East coast and California. Since we don't often have the chance to be together, I really wanted a place to stay where we could gather, have meals and generally hang out between wedding events. The Hawthorne House was the perfect place for the week leading up to the wedding. It has plenty of living space for a group of 10. We thoroughly enjoyed the front porch, back yard and interior spaces. The kitchen was fully functional and completely met our needs for food preparation. The location is ideal for exploring Hawthorne and beyond. When members of my family remember my daughter's wedding, the wonderful stay at Hawthorne House will be a great part of the memories. Thank you so much.

My husband and I traveled up and down the West Coast this summer beginning in June, with a family wedding (my lovely grand-daughter's) in Portland Oregon. We had family coming in from all over the country, and decided to make it something of a reunion time as well. I offered to provide a large home through VRBO, so several of us could stay together, and enjoy the area, and each other. My grand-daughter suggested we find something in the artsy, and vibrant Hawthorne district. I found the Heart of Hawthorne Home listed here, and cannot say enough about how wonderful our stay there was. In fact, after stops in Southern Oregon and several in Northern California, including San Francisco, Portland stands out as the highlight of a wonderful summer. I believe that the warmth, style, comfort and location of this home was largely responsible for the success of this unforgettable trip. Let me say right away that this home was beautiful--somehow spacious, and roomy, while also feeling intimate and cozy. It was immaculately clean and beautifully furnished. My family commented several times that they felt so at home, almost immediately. I should mention that we had 4 generations of family staying here--Grandparents, adult children, teenagers, and one great grand baby--14 months old. My husband and I like to go to bed early-while the younger adults spent many late evenings visiting on the front porch, people watching, and enjoying each other. The house was large enough for us to be sleeping comfortably while others were up late enjoying each other. We also were never awakened by the baby, who stayed on the lower level. There are rooms on each level-=Two quaint, lovely rooms on the upper floor, a room on the middle floor, and a tasteful, finished room and play area in the clean, basement. The kitchen was huge and had everything we needed to prepare wonderful meals. The owner was friendly and most helpful. He directed us towards incredible parks, as well as boutiques, music, wonderful restaurants, cafes, and coffee, and bagel shop-all in walking distance. On the nearby colorful Hawthorne Blvd there was a large, local Natural Food Grocery store. We enjoyed the Portland Waterfront, only minutes away, Mt Tabor Park and Laurelhurst park. The owner suggested we go there at sunset. We were so glad we took his suggestion!! I cannot recommend this home highly enough--it's beauty, comfort, spaciousness, and location cannot be topped. Thank you!!

My husband and I lived Portland when we met. We now live in Virginia We decided to combine a 20th high school reunion trip with a vacation in Portland and Oregon. We chose the Heart of Hawthorne house because of it's location and size and we could not have been happier with it. It was spacious, unique and beautiful. Very clean, tastefully furnished, and full of cozy nooks to explore, or curl up in with a good book, or a journal--The house has a wonderfully inviting porch that we spent a great deal of time people watching and relaxing on. Our teenagers thought the area was extremely "hip" and loved being able to walk up to the bustling and artful Hawthorne Blvd to for a frozen yogurt, shopping and people watching. At the owners suggestion we rented bikes and explored the waterfront, downtown, and various parks. Hawthorne Blvd, also has many wonderful bistro's, restaurants, taverns and cafe. There's even a really cool movie theater, called the Bagdad. The movies are inexpensive, and you can eat pizza, or dinner, and have drinks along with your show. Our kids loved riding over and exploring the many historic bridges--especially, the Hawthorne Bridge. We also loved the wonderful (and new to us) waterfront esplanade and "loop." Great for running, walking or biking. We did do some entertaining, and found it very very easy. We had friends from the reunion over for dinner. There is a large and lovely dining room and a well equipped kitchen. I felt like I was cooking in my own kitchen. Finally, the owner was so personable and friendly. He seemed to really want our trip to be special. I would definitely recommend this home to a family of any size. We hope to be able to stay again. Thanks so much!

Very comfortable, clean, and rather enormous house. Very close to everything. It made our stay even more enjoyable, plus the owner is an absolute pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended,

I rented this house for four friends coming to town for my birthday party. The owner was very patient and flexible while we figured out exactly how many nights each person would be staying. The daily rate was unbelievably reasonable for four people. The location is great. The home is gorgeous. The rooms are huge and there is a large common space. Check-out time is usually 11, but the owner told me that if no one was renting the house right away, my friends could stay longer, and sure enough, they were able to stay in the house until the afternoon of their flight. Overall, my friends were really pleased with their stay. My only regret is that I was so busy planning my party that I didn't get to hang out with them in the house or in the beautiful backyard. I would definitely recommend this rental to anyone coming into town and I will keep it in mind the next time I have more out-of-town guests than I can accommodate in my one-bedroom apartment.

This was our second visit to Portland, and our first visit to this home. We loved the location, we were able to walk and ride our bikes that we brought from home, to every place that we wanted to go..so convenient. We really felt at home in 'Hawthorne House', as it's large, had everything we needed and really felt like our home away from home while we were there. Loved also that it was so clean, as this hasn't always been our experience with other rentals. We'll definitely be back!

We visited The Hawthorne House in December of 2010 for a large family get together. We loved the home as it still has it's craftsman wood finishes and beautiful touches throughout. We had 10 people total with children and the home accommodated us very well. There are two full bathrooms listed in the description but there is also another room with a bath that the kids used while they were playing. The home was well equipped with kitchen supplies but we were only given 8 rolls of toilet paper. the main floor bedroom worked very well as we did not have to go up any stairs to use the kitchen or bathroom. We prefer king size beds but there were four queen beds which worked fine. The neighborhood was very quiet at night and also seemed very safe. We could walk to many wonderful places including near by parks and restaurants. We were also very close to the city and enjoyed Portland very much! It is a vibrant city where many people were walking and riding bikes. This was very refreshing to see people out of their homes. We had to be very careful driving with so many people on bicycles. There were also lots of families walking about the area and we found the city to be generally very friendly. The weather was very rainy as should be expected for that time of year but we did get some sun breaks. We would highly recommend visiting Portland and if you do, The Hathorne House is a wonderful place to stay.

We had a group of nine coming up for the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival...a mix of couples and singles. Lots of different interests and modes of travel...bikes, cars and those that love walking. This was a perfect house for all of us. It was so easy to get everywhere we wanted to go. The neighborhood was charming and had great restaurants...The Hawthorne Street Cafe, with the best marion berry coffee cake, was a brief walk down the street. The house was great for our group. Charming on the outside and fun to explore all the rooms inside. It was so big we all felt like we had our own space and privacy but it also had a great living room that we all could relax in and share stories from our adventures from each day. The backyard was private and would have been perfect for outside dining, though we choose to eat our meals out. The owner was great and responsive to our calls. I sent an extra check to pay for our extra person and when we left he sent back our deposit and the extra check, too. What a nice gesture. I would recommend this property for a family or large group and would definitely stay there again!

Although we enjoyed our stay in Portland and at this house in the Hawthorne area, I am greatly disappointed by the owners' misleading information in regards to having the damage deposit returned. While in Portland, the owner was accomodating to our needs, dropping off some supplies that were not at the house and allowing us to check in early etc. Upon our return home, however, I received a cheque that was supposed to be my damage deposit returned to me. The cheque was not written for the same amount that I had sent, it was short money. When I questioned this, the owner told me that the Credit Union charges $8.00 per cheque that comes from another country. (The cheque I wrote was in U.S. funds, therefore it was able to be deposited directly into an American account.) While I am not denying the possibility that there were bank charges, the amount of money that is returned to the renter is totally up to the owner, not the bank. If the owners want to recover bank costs, that information needs to be provided to the renter beforehand. It is the owners' responsibilty to follow through on what has been stated (full refund of damage deposit if no damage occurs). When I followed up with another email requesting my additional money (stating that it was his responsibility and not the bank's) I received no response. At the end of our stay, we felt we would return to this rental even though we had a few issues with the equipment at the house, but not now. I am dissappointed as I have done many vacations using VRBO and have not had this kind of thing occur previously. Unless the owner changes his practice of charging additional costs not previously mentioned, I would not recommend this property.
