Your vacation home is one of the "twin cottages on Broadway" in the historic village of Bayside. This tiny summer community provides one of the world's safest places for children and friendliest places for grown-ups. Three parks, one with playground equipment and a basketball court, overlook the bay. A lifeguard supervises swimming from the wharf, while grownups and smaller children sit and swim on the pebble beach. The Northport Yacht Club sponsors sailing lessons and if you want to bring a boat you will probably be able to rent an unused mooring through our wharf master. The wharf is a minute's walk away. If you're willing to walk a little further, like 3-5 minutes, you'll find the beautiful, forgiving and very reasonably priced 9-hole Northport Golf Club. The pro is a great teacher and there are some clinics for kids available as well as private lessons. On the way back from the golf course, pick up a book from the Bayside Library -- no need to register and no fines to pay!
Akia Cottage is one of the campground's original cottages, but special in being a rare design, with unusually large bedrooms upstairs. Each of the large bedrooms has a full-size bed, the little bedroom has a twin bed. There are ceiling fans in the two large bedrooms as well as in the living room.
The wrap-around front porch is a great place to sit and watch Bayside go by in the morning with your coffee, and in the evening the back porch provides glimpses of light on the Bay and privacy for your evening relaxation.
The cottage has been recently renovated, freshly painted and very clean, with completely new bathrooms and a new downstairs den area that stays cool when the weather is hot and has heat for cold evenings! The kitchen is simple but large with fully functional appliances and ample eating and cooking implements. A tiny television is available, useful mostly for DVD viewing, since the TV signal is minimal. Local telephone service is free. If you have a laptop, there is free wireless internet service available in several places in nearby Belfast.
Our great neighbors are one of the most outstanding features of our cottage and the village is a favorite spot for families with children, many of whom return here every year, so there's always someone to make friends and play with.
The closest "destination walk" takes you 3/4 mile down the road to the Bayside Store, with the coast's greatest submarine sandwiches and cheapest gas (you have to pay cash or check for the gas, though!). Longer hiking the other way takes you along the Penobscot Bay to the relatively warm waters of Kelly's Cove (at high tide only) and then in a 6-mile loop up Mount Percival and back to Bayside. Nearby Camden Hills provides more serious hiking and Knight's Pond has warm water swimming and boating. Nearby on Route 1 there is a place to rent kayaks and canoes.
Our Cottage, like most of Bayside's homes, has no private yard space, so your well-behaved dog must be walked regularly on a leash and cleaned up after. If your dog is crate-trained, a large crate is available in the den should you need to leave your dog home alone while you sight-see.
