The Oven apartment is the third apartment in The Bakery. The other two are The Baker's Quarters (VRBO #172604) and The Artist Loft (#). Most of buildings along the main streets, such as Fleet, consists of two to three stories in which the first floor was where retail or other business occurred. The upper floors were where the proprietor lived. This is exactly the same arrangement you have at The Bakery after nearly 100 years except that art replaces baked goods as the product. Guests at The Bakery within a day begin to get the feel of the street, how it opens up and how it closes down. With the focus on art, surprised by the vibrant art community in Fells Point and other adjacent neighborhoods, guests at The Bakery have a reason to explore a list of art venues, known to the locals, that otherwise might not be explored. This is The Fells Point Experience.

But this is just the beginning. The Bakery has a set of three of the most unusual apartments in all of Fells Point. There is The Baker's Quarters (VRBO #172604) with its Vertical Kitchen @TM, The Artist Loft () and now The Oven apartment, named such because the focal point of the approximately 900 sq. ft. apartment is the brick face of the old huge oven which is all that remains of the bakery. The edgy and stage design interiors along with all original art, white burber carpet and unusual lighting provide a sensual experience. The twenty one feet of wardrobe cabinets go largely unnoticed. The use of a glass counter in the kitchen (believed to be the first in America) enhances the other black granite counters. The Bakery is a mini version of The O Street Mansion in Washington DC, the details of which are given to guests for their information and hopefully future exploration.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1979

retired executive, have lived in the Wash. DC-Baltimore area for fifty two years. renovated individual properties as a side line. Born and raised in Sioux City Iowa. Graduated from Univ. of Iowa- Iowa City 1957 Followed two older sisters who came to Wash DC. in 1941 and 1943 for the war effort. Graduated from Georgetown Law Center in 1962 and started his own communications law practice representing AM and FM stations or applicants. Expanded practice to include telephone, paging and cellular companies. Began investing in Baltimore real estate in 1979. He liked the contrast between Washington and Baltimore. Baltimore has a large industrial and manufacturing base, a large port, a highly skilled work force, ethnic neighborhoods (Italian, Greek, Polish, etc.), has managed to save most of its important historic neighborhoods and its downtown commercial and residential buildings are not limited in height.

Why the Owner Chose Baltimore

Chose a unique property (The Bakery) in Fells Point thirty years ago when it was a sleepy but funky place steep in history. Close to the Inner Harbor yet distant enough to keep its own identity, Fells Point is very comfortable in its surroundings mostly small brick townhouses with cobblestone streets with a smattering of very large old ware houses (which now have been turned into condos and hotels) hugging its own harbor and industrial plants such as the old can factory, The Tack Factory, and the Broom Factory.

The Unique Benefits of this Apartment

Eastern Ave., one block away, is a vibrant hispanic segment, with small cafes, featuring the best rated torteless according to a guest from Bar Harbor Maine, pastries (not as sweet as American's, and duck pin bowling - using three balls that fit in your hand, slender pins and scoring 100 is considered very good.

I stayed in the Oven Apartment for 4 months while on a temporary work assignment in Baltimore. It was perfect! It is walking distance from all the bars, restaurants, and shopping that make Fells Point such a fun place to live. I always felt safe, and the neighbors are very friendly. The owner was very helpful with providing me suggestions on things to see and do in the neighborhood. He even helped me unload all of my belongings form my car when I arrived! Definitely recommend for a trip or short stay to Baltimore!

A friend and I stayed in the oven apartment in Fell's point for one month while we were doing an elective in Johns Hopkins Hospital. I would recommend this accomodatino wholeheartedly. The location was perfect for Johns Hopkins - the walk to the hospital was safe and pleasant - takes about 10 minutes - and the area was ideal for shopping, restaurants and as a base to discover baltimore. The owner was a very gracious host and was there if we ever needed anything and helped us explore the surrounding area. Thank you :)

Stayed in the Oven for eight months- Loved it

I stayed in the Oven Apartment for over eght months while on a temporary work assignment. It was perfect for me and convenient to everything. My wife and 2 sons (1 year old and 4 year old) came out for a couple of weeks during the summer and had a blast walking to the museums, aquarium, harbor, shot tower, etc. It was very convenient and walking distance to most of the sights, which allowed us to avoid renting another car. In general, easy to work with owner, convenient to attractions and restaurants and plenty of space.

Owner response:Corporate client had no problem finding parking on the street. He returned most weekends to his family in the West Coast. Once we learned of this we would confer with him about weekend (Fri.-Sun. night) rentals and with his permission book these requests to reduce his cost, an important consideration in these uncertain economic times.

We had a wonderful time walking through Fell's Point. The apartment is comfortable and quiet. A perfect place for our stay.

Owner response:Nice midwestern couple here for the son and daughter-in-law first baby. Liked the uniqueness of the apartment plus how quite it was inside.
