Location: Matinicus Island, Mid-Coast & Islands, Maine, USA (1 Hour Boat Ride or 15 Minute Flight from Rockland, Maine)
Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)
Matinicus Island is the most remote Maine island that has a year round community (29 brave souls overwintered 2007-2008). It is located about 20 miles from Rockland at the mouth of Penobscot Bay. It is two miles long and never more than one mile wide. It is a wonderful spot for birds migrating up and down the eastern seaboard and for people trying to get away from it all. It is accessible by either boat or plane from Rockland, Maine. The boat takes a little over one hour. The plane takes about 15 minutes from Owls Head Airport. A small store is opening this summer but you should bring all your own food. During the summer months you can purchase homemade breads and sweets from Eva. Lobsters are available from the fishermen. Another islander creates a variety of delicious chowders as well as cooked lobster dinners delivered to your doorstep. You can order food from Shaw's Supermarket in Rockland that will be delivered by plane for a fee.
We are located on the quiet western side of the island facing the setting sun. Our post and beam farmhouse was built circa 1830 by Benjamin Burgess (uncle of Abbie Burgess of Matinicus Rock Lighthouse fame) with 620 square feet downstairs. There is a living room with a queen sized sofa bed, king sized bed in the master bedroom, a bathroom and fully furnished kitchen downstairs and an unfinished attic with a double bed upstairs. The living room and kitchen have exposed hand hewn beams. Seven of the windows are nine panes over six and might be the original ones. While Benjamin and Lavinia and their ten children lived in the house in 1840, we limit the number of visitors to four.
It is very secluded, located at the end of the road surrounded by land protected by the Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Bald eagles and ospreys fly over from time to time and an occasional seal swims by. We have our own cobble beach just across the lawn and down a short path through the beach roses. While there is some sand at low tide, the beach is made up mostly of smooth pebbles and rocks of infinite variety and colors. You can hike along our rocky shoreline all the way to West Point and its spectacular views of the Camden Hills 20 miles north across Penobscot Bay.
If you prefer sandy beaches, there are two within a 15 minute walk of the house. South Sandy Beach is considered one of the best beaches on any of the coastal islands. It has gorgeous views of Criehaven Island and is never crowded. It is a great place to find sand dollars.
Life doesn't get better than relaxing on the deck as the sun drops towards the ocean. If you want an out-of-the-way, quiet, spectacular place to enjoy the ocean, this is it! SUMMER 2010 IS ALMOST FULL. $1000 SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY BEFORE LABOR DAY. SEPTEMBER IS OPEN AND A GORGEOUS TIME ON THE ISLAND.
