Our log cabin is conveniently located near Coram Montana on a well maintained county road just 8 miles from West Glacier, the west entrance to Glacier National Park. It sits on 5 park-like acres overlooking a 27 acre pond/wetland that is home to many birds and animals. The setting is peaceful, teeming with wildlife and yet located near many wondrous and fun attractions. Click our website link below for maps and details about the area, including our favorite day trips.

Spring begins at the pond, with the emergence of the painted turtles. They have been hibernating and come out to sun themselves on the floating logs. Many birds visit and live at the pond. The most prevalent are grebes who build floating nests to hatch and raise their young. Ducks, loons and Canada geese are also residents. Blue herons are frequent summer visitors. Our last fall visitors before freeze-up were a family of 6 white swans. While the pond is a wonderful place for wildlife, it is not a place to swim or fish. The pond has an abundance of lily pads and fish as food for birds (too small for people). Enjoy our pond by watching the wildlife.

We have enjoyed many hours restoring this 1970's structure and now hope you will enjoy our resulting efforts. The furnishings are an eclectic mixture on new and old, comfortable and interesting, with handmade quilts on each beds. When you are tired of hiking or skiing you will find puzzles, a read-it-or-trade-it library and over 100 movies to entertain yourself. If cooking is your "thing" the kitchen is fully equipped. Our favorite cabin spot for reading or dining is the porch. With patience and quiet the deer or elk they may come to visit; they are always around but are shy. Click our website link below for many interior photos and a floor plan.

Winters are amazing and the road is plowed to the cabin. We often cross country ski around the pond or in the forest nearby. The road in Glacier Park is plowed to Lake McDonald Lodge and you can ski or snowshoe from there up the road past the Dancing Cascades. There are also private groomed trails near West Glacier. Downhill enthusiasts can make the 30 minute drive to Whitefish Resort (formerly Big Mountain), a nationally known destination ski area.

Our Stay at Glacier Retreat

We loved this cabin in Glacier (Coram). Easy to find, beautiful and spacious. Mostly we enjoyed the privacy we found there. Lots of birds, squirrels, deer, beautiful flowers, and comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed. We would gladly stay here again if we make it back up to Montana. So glad we found it. VRBO has not disappointed us in the many years we have been using it. The owner checked on us the day we got there to make sure we were comfortable. All the info we needed was there in the cabin with phone numbers in case of an emergency. The Glacier Grill was less than a mile from the cabin and we ate there 4 times. Very good food. We highly recommend this to our friends/family. The listing photos accurately reflected the cabin - we were very pleased when we got there. Our stay was without problems - we didn't want to leave. Thank you so much.

Great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings!

We spent a week at this wonderfully equipped cabin. Anything you need for cooking, entertaining little people or adults is all there. Kathy and John have left a great list of activities to do for every interest and ability level. We loved the easy access to Glacier National Park and the quiet setting of the cabin when it was time to unwind at the end of the day. This cabin can comfortably fit a large group with spaces for everyone to be together as well as spots for people to break off from the action if needed. We will be staying again!

A quiet hideaway in an exquisit setting

My wife and I lived in Montana for many years before moving to Mississippi. We have been back to Glacier National Park every year since we moved. Finding the Stengers' retreat was simply the best. From the moment you drive in the gate, the place makes you feel at home. Instantly, we saw birds, deer, and a turtle digging a hole to lay eggs which was interesting because we had never seen that before. Inside the house, everything one needs is available and easy to find. On this last trip, we brought our 80+ year old friend who also was entranced. From lunch on the porch watching the swallows, to cooking and having a glass of wine, the retreat makes you feel elegantly at home. Add to the retreat its nearness to Glacier and it cannot be topped. We arrived this summer after our plans to hike into Sperry Chalet were blocked, literally by snow, hiked into Avalanche Lake, and were on the road to Logan Pass the day the road opened to the public. Add to that a helicopter tour via Minuteman Aviation, the last helicopter touring site on the left before entering the park, and you have the experience of a lifetime. The listing description was accurate. The photos are good; the property was clean and super well-maintained. Kathy called and worried about whether the placemats were on the table when we arrived, and was extraordinarily helpful. We have encouraged our son, daughter-in-law and grandson to come and stay there with us. For us the park is the major attraction! We like to cook and have a glass of wine but did journey to Whitefish to see a play this summer. This is an easy drive and the setting for the play was wonderful. We have no reservations about recommending the Stenger Retreat to others and do it regularly.

Great Location to Glacier National Park

Guest: KC native (Kansas City, Missouri)
Date of Stay: 06/25/11 Review Submitted: 07/04/11

We stayed at this cabin the end of June 2011 and found everything we needed and then some. The solitude was wonderful and it was convenient to entrance at West Glacier. It was HANDS DOWN the best bed we've slept in while vacationing. The little things like a hand-held shower were appreciated. When we arrived the bird feeders were full and we watched the birds (and squirrels) as they emptied them more each day. The hummingibirds were fun to watch while relaxing on the porch. Kathy and John were great to work with from directions to hiking to dining. Their website provided a lot of valuable info in itinerary planning. As hosts they haven't missed a thing and the cabin was tastefully decorated and stocked. West Glacier Pizza had excellent breakfasts as well as pizza. Do not get taken by the Rawhide Steakhouse.

This property is fantastic! You are so close to the park, yet you are away from the crowds. The house is beautifully decorated, has all the right amenities and is a perfect place to relax after hiking in the park. The pond is a special addition...lots of birds and wildlife to view from the deck. Kathy is a a gracious host and has some wonderful suggestions for hikes. All in all, a perfect place to stay when visiting Glacier(which is breathtakingly beautiful).

It was a convienent location for visiting Glacier National Park. We enjoyed barbecueing and eating on the deck. My family and I really enjoyed the house and its close proximity to Glacier National Park. The house had a great feel about it and the birds around the property were amazing. Hummingbirds were buzzing back and forth all day. Painted turtles too. The owners did a nice job of making sure we had everything we needed. Very nice place.

Rest and Relaxation

Guest: Dixie (Highland, Utah)
Date of Stay: 07/11/10 Review Submitted: 07/19/10

We just spent a week at Glacier National Park and couldn't have asked for better accommodations. There were three couples and we enjoyed having our own personal space, yet area to hang out together. We ate on the porch and watched and listened to the wildlife. It was so hard for us to leave the peace and come back to "real life". The cabin was clean and well stocked with everything we needed. We spent a couple of evenings at the local "fun center" as we unwinded from long days in the park. Kathy was quick and helpful in responding to questions we had before our visit and during our visit. She is a great long distance host. We hope to return soon.

With the crowds in Glacier Nat'l Park, it was a real joy to be able to go home to such a wonderful place. It made the trip. We would come back after a busy day, & have a great meal in a quiet and beautiful setting. Or we could just relax on that marvelous deck and watch the many critters. The bed was the best I have ever slept in, all of the amenities are first class, and everyone had their own space. The only down side is that it isn't located closer to Eugene! I would highly recommend this as the home base for any trip to Glacier Nat'l Park. Thanks for sharing your wonderful cabin!

Everything about the Stenger's cabin was perfect. Close to Glacier National Park, yet private and relaxing. It's a place to enjoy on its own. We plan on returning.
