Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 1.5 Baths (Sleeps 4-6)
Keywords: Home, straw bale
Beautiful custom designed straw bale house with an eye towards "green and sustainable living". Custom wood work throughout. Antique reclaimed doors and original art work give this charming home a wonderful sense of character. The now rare but traditional "bee's waxed mud floors" add to the artistic and quaint charm of Apple Hill Farm. An incredibly gorgeous setting with valley and mountain views will refresh the spirit and soul of all guests large or small, young or old. Stroll the private orchard or take a walk to the charming village of Arroyo Seco with shops, boutiques and eateries. Relax in the hot tub while watching our famous sunsets.
The open floor plan showing two lofts connected by a wooden bridge walkway adds intrigue and charm and two additional sleeping areas. For added convenience the lofts share an upstairs half bath. Located half way between Taos and the ski valley, winter guests will enjoy the convenience of the straight drive up to Taos Ski Valley or the easy access route down the mountain and into Taos for dinner or shopping.
See our other property, Casita des Montes, VRBO # 279174, right next door to the straw house. Rent both for family gatherings or celebrations with friends and we will offer you a special rate.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2004
I have been visiting the Taos area since the early '70's. My daughter owns Casita des Montes, right next door, so I visit often with her and my two grandsons. I am a retired Clinical Social Worker and enjoy reading, knitting and cooking up something new for family and friends.
Why the Owner Chose Arroyo Seco
Building an energy efficient and "green" house on my daughter's property was a wonderful addition to the two other homes here. It was important to me that the home take little natural resources from an area that has challenges to it's water supply and that has abundant sunshine. The home's heat in the winter comes mainly from the sun, and it stays cool in summer due to the thickness of the straw bale walls.
The Unique Benefits of this House
I visit my home at Apple Hill Farm several times a year. The sunsets here are amazing and I never tire of anticipating each one. I have several close friends in the area and enjoy having them share dinners with me at the straw house. My favorite shops are Wabi Sabi, Common Thread, Twirl Toy Store and Southwest Weaving. Dinner out at Orlando's is always a treat.

What a lovely place! The first thing I said when we arrived, was that the pictures on VRBO do NOT do it justice! A wonderfully crafted straw bale house, filled with light and comfort. If you're looking to stay a little outside the usual Taos Plaza square, this is a great place to be! The views around Arroyo Seco are magnificent, you're closer to the Ski Valley... and staying in a Straw Bale home with all of the modern comforts just can't be beat. We just got home and already I wish we were back there! Everything you'd want or need, and all of the stress just melts away. We got there just at dark, and Linda's directions were exact, the lights were on, welcoming us...and we couldn't have been in a better place. Thanks so much, Linda! Also, there are a few restaurants close by(Sabroso's was so good we went there 2 nights in a row), a shop for essentials, the Taos Cow for great Ice Cream & espresso and you're only 8 miles from Taos to shop, sight see etc. And 9 miles from the Ski Valley.

This is a wonderful, unique, homey, comfortable home. If you were to cook at home, the kitchen was well equiped. The hot tub is private; did not look that way in the photo. This property is between the town of Taos and the ski area, and approximately a 1/2 mile from the small town of Arroyo Seco-short, pleasant walk. Nice gift shops, coffee shop and delicious breakfast burritos at Abe's Market-recommend picking up a burrito on the way to the mountain and while waiting for the burrito, pick up a coffee at the nearby coffee/ice cream restraurant. If you are a reader-this is the place for you! Books on a variety of topics and weel known authors. There are many good restrauants. We enjoyed Antonio's in town. Orlando's is also very good, casual dining. We hope to be able to stay at this property again when we visit Taos. Linda was wonderful and made sure we were comfortable and greeted us shortly after our arrival.

This property exceeded all my expectations. The beautiful pictures really can not do the house justice. My wife and I stayed here for a week and didn't want to leave. The views from any window are gorgeous, the mountains spectacular and the night skies full of stars. The area around the house was wonderfully quiet except for the occasional bird or coyote. The caretaker was very helpful, she made us feel at home and made sure we were comfortable. The house and yard is well cared for. I would recommend this rental to anyone wishing to getaway on an extra special retreat. We will stay again whenever we can.

Our time at this beautiful home was great. Everything we needed was there, including a large selection of movies, books and eclectic music. I loved all the special touches, the art and pottery and rugs and pillows. It was very quiet and peaceful there. Truly a wonderful retreat. We would love to return soon.
