Location: Tybee Island, Coastal, Georgia, USA (15 miles from Savannah's historic district)

Accommodations:  House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)

Keywords:  House

This vacation rental includes the entire first floor of our Tybee Island home. We refer to ourselves as a "Family B&B" because we share the same residence, but our guests have 1000 square feet of private space, plus a large private deck and screened porch. The guest space includes the fully-equipped kitchen, so while we're happy to spend as much or as little time with you as you desire, you're on your own for meals. There are good grocery stores nearby, and fresh fish, shrimp, and crabs are available daily.

Tybee is a unique island community with a small-town feel and resort amenities. Our home is 3 blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, and the entire 5 miles of sandy beach is publicly accessible. We provide beach bikes with baskets and beverage holders, boogie boards, and beach chairs for our guests.

Tybee Moons is an affordable beach getaway with laid-back natural recreation that you can share with friends or family. There are hiking, biking, and nature trails around the island, or you can kayak through tidal creeks and get acquainted with bottle-nosed dolphins. We're an easy stroll from Jaycee Park, which features a 1/2-mile paved walking trail, live-oak-shaded lagoon, Bocce and shuffleboard courts, and a modern playground. There's also an off-leash dog park nearby, so you and your pets can exercise together. There's plenty to do within biking distance, and historic Savannah is only twenty minutes away by car. If you'd rather kick back at home, there's a there's a shady glade with a koi pond and waterfall to help you relax. This area includes a fire pit for weenie or oyster roasts.

The ocean water is warm nearly year-round, and spring and fall are ideal times to visit, since there are fewer visitors and better opportunities to get to know the local folks. After a day or two at Tybee Moons, you'll feel like a local yourself, but be forewarned--the more time you spend here, the harder it is to leave.

Winter Visitors

This is our second winter to stay at Tybee Moons for two months. It was great to arrive in time to see the Polar Plunge this year. We find Tybee Moons very comfortable and well-equipped for cooking. We appreciate that owner Paul Wolff is interested in saving energy and the environment. There are solar panels, like we have on our house, for electricity and hot water. There is a compost pile for kitchen garbage and even lettuce to pick in the garden. There is also a very friendly cat, Ariel. We enjoy our visits with Paul. It is located in a very easy location to walk to the North Beach. It is also a very quiet street with no through traffic.

Awesome Place to Stay

Tybee Moons is a great place to stay on Tybee Island if you have kids. We stayed with our 4 year old and a 1 year old and we were comfortable letting them sit and play on the ground. There were even plug covers on the plugs. The owner, Paul, was awesome and very helpful. Due to a very late arrival by one of our friends at the airport, we headed down to Savannah in the middle of the night. Since we arrived much earlier then expected, Paul even let us check in around 8am. We are definitely planning on staying here again!

If your goal is to find a clean, affordable place to stay, room to spread out, kitchen and laundry facilities, and a short walk to the beach, lighthouse, and American Legion (a big plus for us) this is the place for you. If you are looking for a hotel room and maid service this is not for you. I found exactly what we needed here. And they are PET FRIENDLY which means there have been cats and dogs here. Keep in mind...no cleaning fee and no pet deposits. We enjoyed taking the bikes to the beach. Yes they are older with some rust...but they work and we had a great time. We were there for a wedding at the American Legion and decorated the wedding cakes in the spacious kitchen. There were meals cooked on the grill, coffee consumed on the deck, and a fun for all around the fire pit after the wedding with the owner and his wife. Really nice people! And the topping on this cake was that they were gracious and let us hang out until late in the afternoon on our check out date. Our flight wasn't until 6:30 and we were hitching a ride with another couple. Thank you Paul and Annie. So glad we stayed with you. Have fun with the tile installation. It will make things only better. And give Sandy a hug for us :)

Best deal on Tybee

Tybee Moons has been our "home away from home" every summer for several years now. We look forward to going back to the same place, learning new things about Tybee and feeling like locals for a little while. The hosts are fabulous, the location perfect- you can walk or bike to the beach - they even provide bikes! We love the room we get, two bedrooms and a kitchen and our son fondly refers to it as "the house with the fish pillows."

If you are looking for a "unit" identical to the other fifty or so just like it, then you will not like Tybee Moons. However, if island charm, "beachy" accommodations with a real sense of place, and genuine hospitality are more your style, look no further. The apartment is not new. It is clean and decorated with taste and humor. It has a homey and fun quality that you will not find elsewhere. Don't miss it!

If it sounds to good to be true... it is.

The photos are beautiful on the website and reviews I found were nothing less than glowing, but the reality was much different. This property is unkempt, in disarray, and generally unsatisfactory. It is not the type of establishment I think Tybee Island would like to be represented by. We expected a nice, clean, safe, and peaceful place to stay… what we arrived to was a nightmare including algae and mildew covered porches complete with cobwebs, the included beach chairs and bikes were rusted out junk laying around everywhere (unsightly!), cigarette butts laying around that were obviously weathered by several months, the carpet inside was a shaggy matted mess, the beds were old squeaky mattresses covered with tattered and worn linens that looked like they were from the 60’s. There were no dead bolts… were we going to find the owner (who resided just upstairs) standing over our bed in the middle of the night??? The certified wildlife preserve... a 10X12 joke complete with PVC chairs... and it is not covered unless you are standing under the overhang of the house in the bushes. The shrubbery and flowers mentioned in the directions ("please be careful not to run over them") were non existent, unless you count the dead leaves and twigs laying around. There are probably many more things I could mention, but the review would become too lengthy. Coming from a group that do not expect the best of accommodations and luxury, please BEWARE. We attempted to get our deposit back unsuccessfully... we decided it was worth losing it to go find a safe, comfortable, clean place to stay. We ended up at the Beachside Colony in the Summer Winds property... VERY nice! Thankful to the kind desk clerk and her manager who took pity on us and gave us a really good discount so that we could stay there. They looked at the website pictures and the pictures we took while there and were in total agreement that this property is not what they represent it to be. Spend the money to stay somewhere else... I promise you will be much happier.

Owner response:In our 11 years operating Tybee Moons as a vacation rental, this is the first complaint we've received. Our web site clearly states we're pet-friendly, but one of the guests was allergic to dogs and demanded a refund. This review was fabricated because I justifiably refused. Many of our guests return year after year, and we stand by our reputation as a clean, comfortable, and enjoyable vacation getaway. 1. The porch and deck are clean and comfortable. The "cobwebs" were Golden Orb Weaver webs, which are spun every night in late spring. I clear them out of all access areas daily, but leave some—many guests like the natural geometric artworks 2. The property is well-maintained, though we often have works in progress on our side of the carport. At this time we were in the middle of varnishing four Adirondack chairs to go around the fire pit, and I was working on two bikes. Our projects never interfere with guests' enjoyment of the property. 3. The beach bikes do have some rust—it's the beach, and everything weathers quickly. We can't afford to replace the bikes every other year, but they're serviced regularly, and are a valuable amenity compared to $10/day rentals. Our bikes are stored in a rack at the back of the carport to keep them organized and accessible. 4. The beach chairs and umbrellas are all in good condition. 5. There are no cigarette butts on the property. 6. The carpet is worn, but clean, and this fall we're installing porcelain tile through the rental. 7. The beds and linens are clean and comfortable. 8. I never thought of installing deadbolts—we don't lock our doors, but the rental is separate and secure from our living area. 9. The Certified Wildlife Habitat is ¼-acre of live oak and magnolia canopy trees with water and food sources, natural vegetation, and bird and butterfly-friendly flowers and shrubs. Apparently she is referring to the 18x30-foot fenced area for dogs in the back yard. We have comfortable chairs and a cedar swing by the pond so our guests can enjoy the waterfall and open sky. We mulch the area instead of landscaping with non-native grasses or plants.
