Ulu Niu is a rare find: a beachfront three bedroom vacation property at an affordable rate. Lovingly hand constructed by the owner 20 years ago, this hideaway is set in a lush coconut grove that provides privacy and shade from the tropical sun. Yet just beyond the verdant plantings lies a white-sand beach on Waialea Bay: “perfect sand, gorgeous water, interesting shapes to photograph, a treasure trove of interesting shells and coral,” wrote one guest. This is one of the few natural sand beaches on the Big Island. Swim, dive, snorkel and sunbathe on the beach right in front of the house—the perfect spot for children and adults alike.

Mature plantings, carefully situated, plus two-level design create a haven of comfort for enjoying beach living while capturing the best of the coastal breezes. Beautifully crafted with oak floors, redwood paneling and koa shelving, Ulu Niu is lovingly decorated with artwork by renowned local artists, all related to the owners. Casement windows with venetian blinds between the glass layers attest to the thoughtful design of this tropical home, carefully maintained by the original owner/builders.

The second floor contains the main living area with high beam ceiling, spacious open dining room and kitchen plus comfortable seating for reading or watching television. Just outside is the covered lanai, which offers open-air dining with cooling breezes, ocean views and Hawaii’s famed sunsets. The two bedrooms on this level include an oceanview bedroom and a full bath.

A large dorm-style bedroom on the ground floor, with a separate entrance, contains multiple beds for teens or younger children with a nanny. Also provided are a bathroom and shower plus a laundry room. The carport keeps your vehicles out of the sun for comfortable driving.

  • Cool, private getaway with the beach mere steps away. A chefs kitchen, with a large dining table was spacious and inviting. Every thing was solidly built in what seems like a custom wood home. Amazing windows to allow the breezes through. Open family great room connects to kitchen with the deck providing another outdoor gathering place. The lawn was a nice cool oasis and attracted the local birds. We had a family of 5 here with room to spare. Beach chairs a plenty. The area is a great starting point for visits to both Kona (and all that the Kona coast has to offer) and Waimea. Hawi, Waipio, and the Hamakua coast are easy day trips. This was our first extended stay on the Big Island, so we had lots to see, but next time we will plan our excursions around more kick back days at the house! Hope to return soon. No matter what our plans were for the day, they always began with an early morning snorkel! (and Papayas). Much mahalo to the owners for opening their house to us.

  • Ten of our family rented Ulu Niu and Ehu Kai (just next door) for a week and loved every minute of our time in these houses as well as the incredible beach in our backyard. Renting both houses afforded us all plenty of privacy as well as lots of time together and made us closer as a family. Great snorkeling, fantastic BBQ's and wonderful dinners on the lanai's. These are charming houses, easy to live in.

  • The location was excellent, about 100 ft. from the beach. The nights were glorious listening to the surf. House is well equipped and very pleasant. lovely beach to walk on and as my grandson said, "explore the jungle".

  • We had a wonderful stay at Ulu Niu. The high ceiling give it a spacious feel (and it was plenty of room for the four adults and three kids.) Beautiful woodwork too. A little peak of the ocean through the trees, and a brief walk to the sweet beach.

  • I stayed at Ulu Niu with my grandfather, mom, and my aunt and her husband after my high school graduation. Walking out to the beach each morning for a snorkel and swim was a delight. My 80 year old grandpa snorkeled with a boogie board for support and he enjoyed feeding grapes to the sand crabs. This was a truly memorable family vacation that I will never forget!
