Authentic Siasconset Cottage

Guest: Renee (Chicago)
Date of Stay: 07/16/11 Review Submitted: 08/03/11

This cozy Siasconset cottage was the perfect hideaway for our family. Tucked away on a shell path and surrounded by flowering hedges, this beach cottage is most notable for its privacy in a community where most houses are tucked closely against each other. The cottage gives renters an authentic beach rental experience. The entrance into the house from a generous outdoor deck takes you into a wonderful kitchen which leads to a small living room/ dining room with a ceiling height that happily could accommodate my very tall husband. The decor of the cottage is casual and comfortable, but mainly this cottage is loaded with old Siasconset character. A piano in the semi-private bedroom off of the living room was an unexpected pleasure. The outdoor shower is also one of the great features of this house. It is totally hidden behind a hedge and was a great way to wash off the beach sand at the end of the day. It was a pleasure dealing with Barbara, the owner, who was available to answer any questions. There was also a rescue kitty who dropped by daily for a meal on the deck which was fun for all of us. I would recommend this cottage to couples or families with one or two children who want to experience Nantucket the way it used to be.

Owner response:Thank you for your kind review of the Sconset cottage. We hope that you will return again next summer and stay two weeks with your delightful family.

A Magical Siasconset Cottage

Guest: AJ (Toms River NJ)
Date of Stay: 06/11/11 Review Submitted: 08/02/11

A step back in time with all the comforts of home this magical Siasconset cottage was a wonderful retreat, adding to our perfect Nantucket vacation. The linens were fresh and there were towels a plenty. I cherished our evenings on the deck surrounded with roses and a glass of wine. A short walk to the beach...we even avoided the crowds in Nantucket central. Bike rides to the lovely area restaurants and the charming market. A true pleasure and a week of escape from the hustle and bustle back home.

Owner response:We are always pleased to hear how our cottage is appreciated. Thank you for your helpful review.

We really tried to like this cottage.

Guest: Vacationer (Southeast)
Date of Stay: 06/30/11 Review Submitted: 07/23/11

The cottage does have an authentic 20s feeling with charming decorations, however, our expectations were that the property would be better maintained. Large cracks between the poorly hung screens made it easy for all sorts of insects to invade the house. We spent our evenings fighting flying bugs and our days removing them from sheets, towels and clothing. Unlike the listing description, there is no queen bed in the house, only a regular size one in the main bedroom, twins in the second and a twin on the porch. Although we understood there would be a footed tub with a shower, we expected plumbing that would allow an adequate mixture of cold and hot water without getting frozen or scalded with each bath. The jerry-rigged bathroom sink leaked constantly. A landscaper showed up one day with a bobcat and worked in the yard all day, leaving chairs overturned and a heavy hose lying across the deck. The location is great; we loved walking to the village and to the lighthouse each day. We really tried to like this cottage, but after a few days, we were exhausted from dealing with all the maintenance issues. We left early. We have rented through VRBO several times each year for many years and have never had this kind of experience. I don't know who wrote the previous reviews, but they must love tent camping. This could be a truly lovely place with some maintenance work.

Siasconset retreat

Guest: James W. (Aquinnah, Ma.)
Date of Stay: 08/14/10 Review Submitted: 05/07/11

My wife and I have visited this lovely cottage every summer for the last five years. It provides a real taste of the old Sconset, a totally charming private retreat but a short walk to beaches, excellent dining and the lovely village. It is easy to forget that Nantucket town is only 15 minutes away. The spacious deck is ideal for enteretaining and barbeques, the house is light and airy. Both this cottage and the village of Sconset are a charming and delightful destination. I am kooking forward to my next stay this summer.

Owner response:We look forward to having you stay at the cottage again. It is lovely here in the fall when the moors start to turn colors. Thank you for continuing to re-book with us for the last 5 years.
