A Grayton Tradition - The Historic "Washaway" - on the beach in Downtown Grayton
Four bedroom, 3 bath, sleeps 12 - 3 queens, 2 sets of twin bunks, queen sleeper sofa. Built in the late 1800's by Capt. Miller and later Coast Guard Headquarters for a Cavalry unit during WWII, this home has survived a major hurricane in the 1930's (but was almost washed away!), as well as standing strong during Hurricane Eloise in the late 1970's and Opal in the fall of 1992. It is a Grayton treasure and centrally located in Old Grayton, ½ block west of the famous Red Bar Restaurant. Other wonderful shopping and good restaurants within 1/2 mile - 2 miles, some with great, live music. Local rentals on kayaks, bicycles, yolo boards, beach chairs and umbrellas.
Come step back in time and relax on wide wrap-around porches with refreshing gulf breezes and breath-taking views of the Gulf of Mexico and Western Lake. Great gathering place for family and friends. Located on the beach sand just one house off the beach. Step back in time with the unique turn of the century floor plan that adds to the timeless appeal of Grayton's oldest home.

Map & Owner's Profile
Historic 1890's Beach House, on the Beach in Downtown Grayton
Year Purchased: 1964
Why the Owner Chose Grayton Beach
Best family beach on the coast because of the lake that winds down to the Gulf (shallow water in the lake for young children to safely splash and play all day), and all of the quaint cottages that still remain. No high rise condos here, just privately owned beach houses and cottages. Many of the same families from the mid 1900's still live or vacation at Grayton.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Watching the sunrise over the gulf and sand dunes when Grayton is at its quietest; enjoying the serene view of the beach and enjoying a soft gulf breeze on the porch, even when it is calm & still on the streets of Grayton; jogging, cycling or walking the 30-A trail; having a cookout on the deck at sunset; walking yards away to a dune and watching for shooting stars late at night; enjoying all of the sounds of a busy night at Grayton when the Red Bar Restaurant is packed out; relaxing with family and friends and doing nothing at all and making memories that the tide cannot wash away. There is definitely a sense of comfort and peace staying at The Washaway - a Grayton Tradition. It is like stepping back in time...as simple as you want it to be, a change from the norm, a time to be refreshed...a rare opportunity to let go of the anchors that weight us down, and catch a wave to greater freedom. We welcome you to vacation at our beach house and hope you find your own unique benefits while here!
Famous and very crowded at night, especially Thurs - Sundays. Live jazz band on some nights. Super good and inexpensive breakfast and lunch. Amazing dinners. Grilled grouper is incredible. Panne
GREAT lake for kayaking. Rent kayaks from Yellow Fin at the Grayton Beach Store. They will deliver to the lake and you can kayak in the lake or take the lake down to the gulf and kayak in the gulf i
Miles of paved trail. It is fun to walk/jog or cycle from Grayton to WaterColor Resort/Seaside 2-2/1/2 miles east and tool around their brick-paved streets and trails through the woods by the wetland
Owner's Map of Grayton Beach
The Washaway - A Grayton Tradition is a third generation beach house. Our grandparents, Kate and Buster Florence bought it in the mid 1960's and took it from its state of abandonment and dilapidation to be a standing landmark in Grayton today.
