Later, head next door to Johnny’s Place for a delicious margarita and watch the volleyball and soccer players while the sun sets. Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2007
My name is Karen and I live in Pacifica, California with my husband, three sons, dog, cat and snake. I love running along the beach near my house, skiing in the Sierras and of course, travelling. I work in high tech as a project/program manager and my husband, Paul, is an executive chef.
Why the Owner Chose Monterrico
After taking an amazing three week vacation to Guatemala in 2006, we decided to buy a second home there for vacation and future retirement. We explored different locations, but within minutes of setting foot in Monterrico, we knew that we wanted a house there. We were enamoured by the friendly people, small town atmosphere, beautiful beach and warm weather. Since purchasing the house, we have made lots of improvements, based on our needs and recommendations from guests. Our entire family enjoys spending time at "our beach house" and we usually visit twice per year.
The Unique Benefits of this House
The best way to describe unique benefits is to give you a picture of my typical day. I wake up to the waves and sun shining in my window. I sip my coffee at the veranda alongside the beach while watching the pelicans dive for fish in the ocean. My husband and I then take a walk through town, saying "buenas" to the locals and passing pigs, chickens, cows, horses, etc. on the way. I spend the afternoon relaxing at the house - swimming in the pool, looking for shells on the beach and reading in a hammock. At 5pm, I go to Johnny's for the best margarita in Guatemala and watch the beach soccer and volleyball games. Dinner is at our house on the outdoor patio, the meal made with fresh produce and seafood bought that day. After dinner, I go to the pool hall for billiards and music or to Johnny's for cocktails and dancing. Back at the house, I take a late night dip in the pool and look at the starry sky and palm trees. The end of a perfect day!

We traveled to Guatemala city from the British Virgin Islands to visit family and needed a vacation within the vacation and this house looked perfect. I called Karen on VERY short notice the day after New Years and bombarded her with questions. Karen was pleasant and very helpful. The house was very clean and exceeded our expectations. More then enough space to accommodate us 5 adults and a 12month old baby. Nice private secure lot for a baby to romp in. The grounds keeper came in early every morning to clean and refill the pool when needed. BEAUTIFUL beachfront views. Conveniently located next to one of the best restaurants & lounges around. 200 yards down the beach from the Leatherback Turtle Hatchery, where you get to adopt and set a baby turtle free. GREAT VALUE!! Great House to bring the family or small group of friends. Wish we would have come here for our honeymoon...

Karen is very helpful the information on monterrico is useful in many ways. I really enjoyed the town as a whole because it has the typical guatemala feel with a few of the comforts of home. The house was very nice, spacious, great for a family gathering. The yard and deck are lovely and full of shade. Fermin was helpful however if you're looking for privacy you won't have it. He cuts through the yard constantly and will look into the house regularly. We even had someone come all the way into the house looking for Fermin. Also be aware that he will help you get anything you need but many times it is cheaper to find by other means. It is important to note that even though it says linens provided there were only four towels and no extra sheets or pillows. Thankfully it was just the two of us for most of the stay had we had a bigger party we would have been short. Though it was not my typical experience with rental properties the location and atmosphere are lovely and completely worth the stay.
Owner response:We have hired a rental management company to tend to the pool and grounds, provide cleaning services and ensure that guests' needs are met. This will resolve the issues that our guest experienced.

Karen is incredibly great and helpful hostess. We got a ton of info about the country and the place before we came, and Monterrico appeared to be exactly what she said it would be - beautiful, down to Earth and friendly. We had a wonderful time there! Specifically we enjoyed the company of Fermin - the property manager - and his family - very nice people. The house is truly beautiful tropical bungalow and actually it's much more spacious that we thought from the pictures! And the yard is amazing, I had no idea the coconut palms were giving that much shade! We loved the hammocks and the view of the ocean, which is so close one can hear waves. We'd come again in a heartbeat! Thanks, Karen!

Our stay here was so enjoyable. The house is very attractive and comfortable. The location, right on the beach, is perfect. The pool is refreshing. A great place to lay in a hammock and enjoy a bit of paradise.
