THE PERFECT PLACE FOR US!

Guest: Menda (Newton, NC)
Date of Stay: 04/01/12 Review Submitted: 04/16/12

We must have looked at over 100 listings for a special destination for our "birthday" vacation. We picked Little House on the Blanco and were extremely happy, comfortable and entertained during our week's stay. The location is just great, run into town within a couple minutes time or plan a day trip - there is just so much to do within easy distance from this location. We found great restaurants too - our favorites were Leaning Pear in Wimberley, Salt Lick in Driftwood, Silver K in Johnson City, and we can't leave out the great breakfast taco's at the local Shamrock (a tip from the Maui Wowi Coffee House which was also very good). My husband ventured out on several cycling trips from the house. We had our two dogs and the house was also great for them. We saved time everyday to relax and read down by the river, it was just beautiful and near perfect! We have recommended to friends and family and plan to return when we can. Our thanks to the owners, they were great -

My husband and I stayed in the little house for a weekend in march. The property is a great location. It is right on the river and very close to town. The house had everything we needed and a nice patio to eat dinner on. We had a fabulous time sitting by and hanging out in the river. Our dog also lived the river location! I would definitely recommend staying here. Thanks for letting us stay in your house and have a great weekend away!

Great Stay

Date of Stay: 03/02/12 Review Submitted: 05/04/12

My wife and I rented the Little House on the Blanco for a birthday getaway. One of the plusses for us is the pet friendly atmosphere. Our dog absolutely loves to run around in nature and as good a time, if not better, than we did! Unfortunately the hot tub was out of commission but the owner was very apologetic and compensated us accordingly. The property is absolutely beautiful and the spot on the river is second to none. The bank is nice and flat with a good bit of shade. Unfortunately we didn't get in the water since it was pretty chilly but, in the summer, this is the spot to be. All in all, the pictures give a good representation of the house. The only thing they don't show is the proximity to the larger home on the property. While the Little House has good privacy, the other home was closer then anticipated. The House was very clean, comfortable and had almost everything we needed for the weekend. I had to make a run to Ace hardware, which is only 5 minutes away, to get a grill surface for the fire pit and a lighter to make a fire. If you're looking for a quiet, comfortable, intimate weekend on the Blanco river in Wimberley; and don't want to stray too far from town; I HIGHLY recommend you stay here. We liked it so much we recommended it to our family for summer vacation.

We used the property for a large weekend gathering and absolutely loved it. We maxed out the capacity but everyone was comfortable and enjoyed the time together. The property ~ both the land and the home ~ is truly beautiful, and the owner did a great job of taking care of us and our needs. The home was clean and had everything we needed for a great experience. The firepit and hot tub were terrific perks as well. We'll definitely come back!

Last minute trip

We had a fabulous time on the Blanco River.....had a stressful week, so booked very last minute on a Friday morning for a weekend stay.....our two boys loved exploring the woods, and enjoying the river we fished w/out much luck, but it was fun trying.....(it was pretty cold, but that did not stop them from rolling up their jeans & walking across the flat rocks).....we roasted marshmallows and hotdogs in the fire pit right by the cottage.....and the hot tub was a definite highlight too, so pretty looking up at all the stars......loved the inside furniture & art.....remember paper plates and cups (no dishwasher) and a flashlight too if end up on the river when the sun goes down.....

We loved the "Little House" at Shade Ranch. Great location and excellent scenery. Wildlife lovers this place is for you. Deer everywhere! Hot tub was great on a cold night. Minutes drive to Gruene and only an hour from Fredericksburg. Only downfall was our weekend went by too fast. Highly recommend.

This place is just as pictured. My husband and I enjoyed exploring the property, the cheery decor of the little house and relaxing in the hot tub. We went to Wimberly for trade days and this was the perfect place... close to town but felt miles away. We discovered the best route to town was to take a left out of the property. Will take you to River Road, and will pass by Leanin Pear Restaurant, highly recommend a meal there.

My husband and I stayed for one night and really enjoyed the house. You're basically staying on a small ranch, on the river, minutes from Wimberley, which is what we were looking for. Since it was a Thursday night, we were the only guests on the property, but the deer kept us company and came within feet from our car! We'll be back the next time we're in the Hill Country. My husband and I stayed at the little cabin with our two dogs. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The property is well maintained and the cabin was nice and clean and the decor was cozy. Our dogs loved running around the property and we all enjoyed the private swimming hole. We're hoping to come again when the weather is warm to take full advantage of it. We were able to see deer almost every day and the town of Wimberly had some wonderful restaurants and shops. We will definitely stay here again.

What a peaceful weekend we had. Very cozy place yet close to town if you want to dine out, shop or mingle. Otherwise just hang out on the porch or in the hot tub and watch mother nature parade by. Our Goldens loved with swimming hole. What a beautiful place to just " be" . Hubby and I are looking forward to our next stay at the Little House on the Blanco. My knitting group wants to plan a trip for about 8 ladies and we will book the Casa Grande; we peeked inside and it looks wonderful for a larger group. I will always keep Shade Ranch in mind for getaways!

My husband, son and I recently spent a long weekend at the Little House on Shade Ranch. I can only describe our time there as magical. We played in the Blanco river, made wonderful meals in the kitchen and grilled out on the patio, took long walks around the wooded property and saw all kinds of wildlife. We were able to spend the day together as a family and then tuck our son in and stay up late under the stars with a bottle of wine in the hot tub. We are already planning a larger family reunion next year and will bring the whole extended family out to experience Shade Ranch and we can't wait!

Two Wheels, Two Days, and Too Good To Be True

Date of Stay: 10/10/11 Review Submitted: 10/19/11

We came to Wimberly as part of a 5 day bicycle tour of hill country in Texas. When we saw Shade Ranch on line the photos looked amazing. I am always skeptical of such great shots! but all was a represented. On arriving we were greeted by deer, wonderful peace and beautiful surrounds. The long driveway winding through the cedars gave us a preview of what was to be a wonderful two night stay. The river was an easy walk down a beautifully maintained path. After cooking out on the grill provided we went down to watch night come to the Blanco. Lots of wild life rewarded us for our effort. We saw deer in abundance, little lizards(salamandars??), king fishers, cranes and plenty of fish. Our two days of biking from the little house was self guided and beautiful as well. The Ranch had local maps from which we could plan our bike rides. The first day we rode into town for lunch then to the Blue Hole for a look see then out a less traveled ranch road to just check out the area. Back at the Little House we watched the moon come up while soaking tired muscles in the hot tub. A comfy bedroom with a ceiling fan, well stocked kitchen, games, books and mothernature made the time pass much too quickly. Everything was clean and well maintained. The second day of riding we ventured futher to Fishers store and back. We never saw a spot more beautiful or peaceful than our home at Shade Ranch. We highly recommend this get away for family fun or small group gatherings. Wimberly has a lot of places to eat, fun shopping and friendly folks.

My husband and I enjoyed are stay at Shade Ranch. We needed a long weekend away and it fit the bill. Even in the middle of this drought, the water level was great in the Blanco river. It was cold and refreshing. I like the fact that it is minutes for the grocery store and down town, just right up River Rd. but while at the house is seemed that we were out in the country. Deer roamed freely around the ranch. Even though other guest were staying in the big house, we had privacy. It's are new location to stay at while in Wimberley!

Date of Stay: 09/22/11 Review Submitted: 11/28/11

Every year my sisters, our daughters and a few close friends take a Girls Weekend trip. This year we stayed at Shade Ranch. We actually rented both of the houses. My daughter, my best friend and I stayed at the Cottage. We all had a great time and plan to return next year .. and stay longer if we can. The cottage is just that .. a cottage but very comfortable with all you need. The property is great; we even took walks up the drive way to stretch our legs. The river is fantastic. We went in the middle of the drought and still it was fantastic! If you want a nice, secluded spot to get away and enjoy the river this is it. ... and don't forget to pop up to Wimberly. It was fun to wander around .. check out the shops and grab a bite to eat. Will be returning again next summer.

My husband and I along with our two daughters thoroughly enjoyed our getaway at the little house. The fishing wasn't all that great but it was still fun. We were able to sit and relax in the river and have some family time since one of our daughters lives in Houston. Since I'm an early riser, mornings were awesome to sit on the covered patio and read my book while the others slept. The wild life was a plus too, we saw deer, turkeys, squirrels, and a skunk. The house was the right size for the four of us, it was well equipt with kitchen utensils. The bed was sooo comfortable, we had such a good nights sleep. We are considering making it a yearly trip. I would for sure recommend this property to my friends & family.

We stayed at the Little House on the Blanco ( Shade Ranch) this past July. Even though Texas has been experiencing a drought the river was perfect. We had plenty of water for swimming and floating. The girls loved looking at the fish through the clear water. We saw deer everyday and other wildlife. The Little House was very clean and we had no problems. A perfect place for a family getaway. The stars are bright deep in the heart of Texas.

2nd summer we have come, and we will be back. We bring our 2 cockers and let them play in the river till they are worn out. Also enjoy taking them around the acreage. If we go to town, we can leave the dogs on the screen porch without worrying about them. The river has both a shallow area and a deeper pool, so there was plenty of water even though the river level was reported as low. Highly recommend it. If you go to Wimberly, try Linda's Fine foods (eat there or take out). Great food for the price.

Perfect weekend getaway

Date of Stay: 05/27/11 Review Submitted: 05/30/11

Our family stayed at the Little Cottage for Memorial Day weekend. What a wonderful place! The cottage has everything one could need. The riverfront is ideal for families. The water is shallow enough for small children, and at its deepest is just the right depth for floating or swimming (3-4 ft.) The water is crystal clear. We caught a few bass without much effort. The magnificent cypress trees along the riverbank provide afternoon shade on the river. We spent our day floating and playing in the river, and spent our evening grilling on the porch. Great gas grill, and wonderful breeze on the porch. We also enjoyed using the hot tub. The porch is also a great place for your morning coffee. We saw multiple deer venture up close to the cottage. The cottage has everything you might need. Just bring your river floats, river towels, and water shoes. The owners were staying in the larger house on the property (Casa Grande) while we were there. They couldn't have been nicer, or more helpful. While in Wimberley, we had dinner one evening at Ino'z (burgers, chicken fried steak, that sort of thing). Sits on the river with a nice outdoor patio. For breakfast, we went to the Wimberley Cafe. Obviously, this is the spot for breakfast in Wimberley. Go early to avoid a wait. Our second morning in Wimberley, we tried Mima's Cafe for breakfast. Good breakfast tacos. The little cottage is highly recommended if you are looking for a peaceful spot in the beautiful Texas hill country, with a pristine, cool river to enjoy! Thank you Norvell family for a wonderful weekend!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It just so happened to be Market Days, so we shopped in Wimberly, then came back to the beautiful water to cool off. We spent every afternoon out on the rocks in the water relaxing and fishing... The wildlife was nice to watch, and i took many pictures. One evening the deer were right by the hot tub ! Had breakfast each morning on the porch and watched the deer . I had a few questions once we arrived, and I called the owner. He was very nice and helpful, and we really appreciated that he took the time to call us back. Our dogs had the most fun, and it was so nice that they were welcome . Would recommend this place and hope to go back again.

This is a great location for a quiet getaway. The house was very comfortable and clean. The river was just as advertised if not better. I brought my beagle and she had a great time walking the river in the shallow area. Wimberly is a nice little town to visit but from this location you can get to Austin or San Antonio for a night out. Evey trip out was a scenic one with something to see arround every corner. It was just My wife and I with our Beagle but I could see having family retreats here with a large group as very fun. Do not miss this one!

We had alot of fun on our trip to Gruene which was about a 45 minute trip down the road. In greuse we went to the Gruene hall and Grist Mill. Two great spots.

This was just what we needed to escape the city life of Houston. Everything slows down and you can take short drives to through the country, or just go to Wimberly and enjoy the simple things. Walking around the shops was a perfect day. We also went to the river each day and just sat around and fished and read. Be sure and take a camera and catch the deer that are all over. We saw many does and bucks eating each night and morning. At one point we watched a group of twenty or so eating and playing around. We will be back.

My wife and I wanted to get away for a few days and this was a great place to do it. We did short trips into Wimberley and met some incredibly friendly people and visited a couple of local wineries, but by far the best was the quiet solitude. We awoke each morning to deer grazing just a few feet away from us. I don't think I've ever seen stars so bright at night! All of this with creature comforts as well. We were able to bring our dog along who had a wonderful time in the Blanco River! (It was a little cold in November for us to join in.) We thank you for the wonderful time!

My husband and I recently spent a wonderful, relaxing weekend at the Little House. The weather was perfection, and we were even able to build a roaring fire in the fireplace, which made things seem extra cozy. The river was clear and low, and we both waded in it for what seemed like hours. The property is lovely and inhabited by lots of deer and rock squirrels. Even though we were minutes from town, we felt like we were a million miles away. Perfection.

The house was perfect for a weekend getaway - we went for my daughter's 11th birthday. When we arrived, the house was adequately stocked with linens, pillows, towels, pots/pans, and all sorts of kitchen supplies. I was also very surprised by the all the bathroom suppliles - first aid items, shampoo, soaps, ect. The house also came equiped with a dvd player which we used at night - and had a small library of videos, not so much kid type - but we had brought our own movie. We stopped at the local grocery store and picked up groceries for the weekend - went back the next day to pick up some steaks for grilling (gas grill provided) and some river shoes I forgot to pack. The river was great! My kids really enjoyed it. Overall, the house was clean and well maintained. We would stay there again.

My husband and I rented this house for our 13th wedding anniversary. Each year we rent a house somewhere in Texas. We would both agree this was the most wonderful time we have had. It is so secluded and peaceful we could have stayed forever. The house has everything so all we had to bring was our clothes and food. We spend a lot of time in the hot tub and hiking. We watched the deer every morning and evening. The house is very clean and wll maintained. The owner and property management was great. One of the biggest reasons we chose this house was that they allow small pets. Our dashound is 10 years old and we were able to take her with us. She enjoyed the long walks we took daily. We will definely be renting this house again.

We absolutely loved your place. It was the perfect get away. Thank you for letting us stay even though we had 6 people. I also wanted to thank you for giving it to us at the 2 person rate because of the last minute reservation time. With 4 children things really start to add up. We were so thankful. The river was awesome. Our 12 year old son had the best time skipping rocks. I think he could go pro! Our girls had fun, too. We could not even get them to leave for lunch. The river was just perfect for our 2 year old. That rock ledge was just right for him. The river was beautiful, and so peaceful. As for your little house, we loved everything about it- the decorations, the furniture, the porch.....my daughter loved the alcove room for reading and relaxing. The coffee table was great for playing games with our kids. We were able to see the big house when the cleaning lady came. It looks great. We would love to rent both houses for a big family reunion. Thank you for a peaceful, relaxing, reconnecting family time. You really have a great place.

Relaxing River Retreat

Guest: D and sister (Lake Conroe, Texas)
Date of Stay: 07/13/09 Review Submitted: 07/21/09

My sister and I spent 5 days at the Little House. I liked so many things about my stay! The cabin was quaint and comfortable, with a screened front porch and a covered rear patio with a nearby hot tub and 2 cooking grills. The river was spring-fed cool and flowing, even in this heat and drought when OTHER places on the river are more rock than water. It was shallow enough to wade in many places, yet deep enough in some places to swim or enjoy with flotation devices. Although we could see an occasional car in the distance, most of the road was obscured from view by foliage, The water is clear. The river floor is rock or light-colored silt. There were no bothersome reeds growing in the river. Since there is one (and only one) other house on the property, we felt comfortable privacy but not isolated seclusion. At sunset and sunrise, we saw deer, rabbits, and squirrels. The cabin was well-stocked, including a microwave, paper towels, coffee, and dishes. Outside, there was always a pleasant cedar scent filling the air. While there, I could enjoy satellite TV or keep up with email using the available Internet. We brought some groceries and bought others at the nearby grocery store. Since my sister knew local people, we ate in nearby restaurants at night, but had breakfast and lunch in the cabin. The Little House is ideal for a couple or two friends looking to get away or commune with nature without "roughing it."

Little House on the Blanco at Shade Ranch is the perfect place for an escape from the city. Smelling the cedar trees, watching the deer grazing, enjoying nature in peace and quite...all the while sitting on a covered porch with a refrigerator just inside. It's the perfect nature retreat for non-campers who like a really comfy place to sleep. The house is nicely furnished and very homey with loads of amenities like a gas grill, Direct TV, hot tub, and internet access. And then there is the river. Wow! The pictures do not do it justice if you like to swim. Being close to town is great too. Quaint shops and nice restaurants. Wimberley also has an incredibly nice Brookshire Brothers grocery where you can stock up and cook your own creations in the fully equipped kitchen. We can't wait to come back!

A Long, Memorable Weekend

We wanted to celebrate my 50th birthday in a quiet, relaxing setting...this was really important since we live and work in LOUD, BUSY Houston! Shade River was the perfect retreat. We met our two kids who go to college nearby which made the location ideal. We spent our days in peace and quiet along the river's edge and on the porch of Little House. There were plenty of deer, squirrels, quail and other local birds. The evenings were breezy and cool - perfect for the hot tub! The bonus was being able to take our two dogs - they loved the river!! The owners are super friendly, very accommodating, and a pleasure to work with. We highly recommend Shade River and look forward to our next visit.

Romantic Getaway

My husband and I take turns planning our Valentine's Day anniversary. This year was my turn and what a treat this cabin was. It was our first time in the Wimberly area and we were close to everything. The Blanco river was just a short walk away and Wimberly was just down the road. The cottage gave us a very homey and roomy feeling and had everything we needed inculding a hot tub. There were deer on the property that we saw in the mornings. We had a great time and will definitely be back.

Romantic Weekend Celebration

Guest: Bami and Brian (Austin TX)
Date of Stay: 01/30/09 Review Submitted: 02/02/09

My husband found this little cabin and we went for the weekend to celebrate his birthday and our anniversary. It was perfect for our needs b/c we wanted to get away for the city/world and relax. We took groceries with us and didn't leave the property from check-in to check-out! The hot tub was fabulous during the cold nights and cool mornings and the spacious cabin makes you feel as if you are visiting someone's home instead of "renting" a place. Hospitality is an understatement b/c if you forget anything it seemed to be placed in a cabinet for you (paper towels, lotion, cleaning supplies, coffee, salt.... you name it-- they had it on hand). The shower is a step-up shower and not so roomy but Everything Else was very comfortable and inviting. We visited in the middle of a very bad dry season and the river was still stunning (not a lot of fish) but Beautiful! We enjoyed grabbing chairs and reading by the waters edge listening to tranquility of the water. There is another house next door that looks quite a bit bigger so if you wanted to share with a large group of friends or your extended family I can see all having a great time. The little town of Wimberly is a stones throw away if you want things like restaurants to zip line activities (they seem to have it all). This is not a 5 star resort set-up but if you are looking to get lost in nature this is an amazing spot to run to. Thank You for the experience ~ bami

This little house is adorable, with every amenity we could want and a super location. We enjoyed hiking around the property and exploring the waterfront. Our children, ages 7 and 4, loved it. We definitely plan to go back when we can swim too. It was so pretty and relaxing, and the house was so comfortable. It has a hottub which was really fun to use as well. The proximity to town made enjoying the shopping and restaurants easy. But most of the time we just wanted to stay and relax because the house is so comfortable and the setting very pretty. I would highly recommend this place.
