My husband and I were part of a group staying there for a wedding the weekend of 8-6-11 and this property was amazing!!! Lots to do, we enjoyed the area (though we were very occupied with wedding details). Very rural and somewhat secluded but a small drive to Lynchburg. We are most definitely staying here in the future!!!!

Spectacular is right!

Fairview was heavenly! We stayed over July 4th weekend and thoroughly enjoyed everything about this property. If you are interested in peace and quiet, away from the hussle & bussle of life -- this is the place to rent. Being surrounded by farm land with the Blue Ridge Mountains out the back porch was simply serene. We had fun cooking in the gourmet kitchen, taking a dip in the hot tub, reading in the provided robes on the rocking chairs, sitting in the sauna, watching the Arabian horses, peacocks, and cows, along with... hiking at nearby Crabtree Falls, boating at Mill Creek Lake, and visiting Saunders Farmers Market. This would be a great place for family gatherings, as there are five furnished bedrooms and plenty of elbow room in/around the mansion. Oh - and our pooch had a great time too! Hope you fall in love with Fairview, as we did !

A gracious bucolic interlude

Four of us, including my 90 year old mother, returned to Fairview recently for a four-night stay. Having stayed at Fairview approximately 10 years earlier, when it was in other hands, we already had pleasant associations with the place. We couldn't have hoped for more, our fond memories were not disappointed and we found many improvements and enhancements had been made to the establishment in the meantime. Fairview's setting couldn't be lovelier and its gardens, peaceful repose, and resident menagerie encourage lollygagging. The viewshed and Fairview's two welcoming porches are an invitation to watching cows, flreflies, sunsets, and, most dramatically, lightening storms along the Blue Ridge. With five generous bedrooms (one on ground level) and four bathrooms, the main house can very comfortably hold a group of up to ten. The spacious public rooms lend themselves to entertaining and the kitchen is extremely well-equipped. The historic nature of the residence and its sensitive renovation, stewardship and furnishing contribute to an almost "other worldly" experience. This is a spot of great beauty and tranquility and, equally, within striking distance of many interesting things to do and see, such as wineries in Afton, the charms of Nellysford, Charlottesville's many sites, and greater Amherst and Nelson counties many places of interest. We found Fairview to be very well appointed and maintained, with many guest needs anticipated and supplied for. Guests requiring cable TV, access to the web, and stable cellular service be forewarned: a highly connected lifestyle is not easily achieved at Fairview, although our group adjusted and became adept at finding sweet spots for cell phone service. Fairview truly wraps visitors in its mood and comforts, surrounding one with history, nature, vistas and tranquility. I hope to return.

Happy, happy bicyclists!

Our 10 person bicycling crew lodged at Fairview for 2 nights while cycling the Blue Ridge Parkway. Aside from the spectacular mountain vistas, the morning fog arising from the valley, and the horses, cattle, and peacocks, the house itself was magnificent. Lot's of good beds, and a fully stocked kitchen. Power cyclists can ride the 20 miles up (note: UP!) to the parkway, or sag up if you want an easier alternative. Highly recommended!

A Beautiful Visit

Our stay at this property was most memorable for my husband and I, along with our daughter and her husband. We used it as a base for daily trips to Monticello (highly recommended) and other historical sites, as well as all of the wonderful hiking and mountain activities. We ate at restaurants recommended by Jennifer and we all enjoyed them. The house is large and comfortable, and I had photo cards made of the wonderful sights and scenes that we enjoyed on the property. The peacocks, especially Big Daddy, provided a lot of free entertainment. My daughter even went back to DC with a new kitten. Thanks Jennifer!

Storybook Christmas

Guest: Evelyn (Conway, SC)
Date of Stay: 12/24/10 Review Submitted: 01/04/11

Fairview was perfect for our family Christmas vacation. Eight adults shared this lovely house for six nights. The property is accurately described on VRBO; the pictures don’t do it justice. The house is elegant yet comfortable. The property is quiet and pastoral. We enjoyed the beautiful vistas from every window; Fairview is the perfect name for this house. Arriving after dark on Christmas Eve we were thrilled to find Fairview beautifully decorated for Christmas. The house appeared to be glowing with warmth from the lovely light fixtures and the gas log fireplaces. It was truly a “storybook” Christmas for us complete with snow on Christmas Day. From inside the warm house we watched the white Arabian horses romp in the field and the peacocks, chickens, and ducks, strut across the yard. We especially enjoyed the dining room table which seats 8 to 10. We lingered long at the table after every meal and gathered around it for card games, conversation, and lots of laughter. We slept soundly and well in the comfortable beds which are appointed with high quality linens. The owner was so kind and patient with me as I asked numerous questions before our stay. She responded promptly and thoroughly to all my emails. My daughter-in-law wants us to spend every Christmas at Fairview. She will get no argument from me!

Amazing Girls Weekend in the Mountains!!

Guest: Brandy (Fredericksburg va)
Date of Stay: 11/06/10 Review Submitted: 11/10/10

We had an amazing time at fairview this weekend! When we arrived and toured the house we could not help but keep huge smiles on our faces. After seeing the downstairs bedroom we thought that we would all have to fight over it but each room we went into was just as charming and wonderful as the one before it. The house was beautifully decorated and the views were breath taking! As a child I visited Nelson county often and I had no problem at all finding my way around. We ate at the devils backbone brewing co. and were very happy with it. The horseback riding was unforgettable and of course the massage was wonderful. We loved the house so much that it was very sad when it was time to leave. I researched a lot of diffrent places in va and nc before deciding on fairview for our weekend away and I was not dissapointed. I am already trying to think of another reason to come back :) thanks again for all your help!!

A very enjoyable stay in the country!

Our son attends college nearby, and we decided that we did not want to stay in a generic hotel when visiting him for "Family Weekend" recently. I found The Fairview at Amherst on vrbo.com, and we had the pleasure of staying there for a long weekend. The property and the home are fantastic. The view in every direction is of beautiful mountains, with horses and peacocks in the foreground. The house itself, built in 1867, is terrific. We are a large family, and it housed us with ease. The owners have decorated it wonderfully, and are equipping it with modern amenities as well (gas fireplaces, Viking oven/range). We entertained 17 people on Saturday night, and it accommodated all of quite well. The property is almost midway between Lynchburg and Charlottesville, which was just right. We had a quick drive north for apple picking, or south for college functions. It is about 10 minutes off the main highway, so it is not difficult to reach. If you are tired of boring, one-size-fits-all hotels, you will enjoy yourself at The Fairview. Jennifer was quick to be of any assistance we needed, and the home is fantastic.

We have rented many cabins and cottages in this area and this one was definitely our favorite. The house and furnishings are absolutely gorgeous, with spectacular views from every window. We also loved the horses, cows, and peacocks all around. We would recommend this rental to everyone and we will definitely be back!

Our weekend at this property was magical. Its a beuatiful house and the intention of the owner, Jennifer can be felt all over the house. The house is beautiful and very personal. Its ideal to get away from the city and have all the comfort of being out of town with the beauty of nature and the house. I recoomend this proerty very highly. Than you Jennifer.

This property is everthing it's said to be and much, much more. The pictures hardly do it justice with it's one of a kind views. The owener was very helpful and professional and made sure the home was clean and well prepared for our stay. We had a very enjoyable stay and I would recommend the property to friends, family, and anyone looking for a quiet stay in the blue ridge mountain area. What an absolute treasure.
