Location: Ocean Springs, Mississippi, USA (20 minutes Gulfport-Biloxi Airport; 1-1/2 hrs New Orleans)
Accommodations: Private Vacation Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4-6)
The Green Cottage is a private vacation home nestled beneath live oaks and magnolias in downtown Ocean Springs. The town is the oldest French settlement on the Gulf Coast, founded in 1699 by the LeMoyne brothers, the younger of whom later went on down the coast to found New Orleans. It’s a town of live oaks, magnolias, small shops, and art galleries and contrasts sharply with the condos and casinos to the west. Visitors come for bird-watching, fishing, uncrowded family beaches, and to visit the internationally renowned Walter Anderson Museum of Art and Shearwater Pottery. Biloxi casinos are two miles away. Beaches, restaurants, grocery, shops, and museums are less than a mile away, so this is a great town for bicycling and walking. New Orleans is about 95 miles away, an easy day trip; Keesler Air Force Base, 12 miles; and Mobile and Dauphin Island, 50 miles.
The cottage is about 100 yards from the Inner Harbor Park, which has public tennis courts, a boardwalk for bird watching and fishing, and a gazebo for picnicking. From here you can launch your canoe or kayak for paddling around the harbor or out to nearby Deer Island. World famous Shearwater Pottery is just beyond the harbor, a pleasant walk from the cottage down a live-oak-lined street and across the little Outer Harbor bridge, a distance of about a quarter mile. The fishing is great. You can bring your own boat (there's room in the driveway) and launch it from the free public boat ramp at the outer edge of the harbor or arrange for a fishing charter or a private guide to take you out to nearby Horn and Ship islands, part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore. The Seashore wilderness area, museum, picnic areas, and boat launch are about two miles away. The Biloxi Bay Bridge with its pedestrian walkway/bicycle path is about a mile away, a perfect place for sunsets.
The house is newly remodeled and has porcelain tile throughout with Oriental and Mexican rugs. It has a very private screened porch looking out at ancient live oaks, sago palms, and camellias and has a rocker, old-fashioned glider, chaise, and dining table and chairs. This is a great place to enjoy the morning bird symphony. The kitchen is well furnished for people who like to cook and entertain.
The house is handicapped-accessible through the screened porch (one step of about four inches in each doorway). The bathroom won’t accommodate a wheelchair, but a walker is fine. There are hand-holds at the commode but no special facilities in the tub. For a more detailed description and photos, please see my website.
I accept PayPal. Please note maximum occupancy of six and restrictions regarding smoking.
