The Green Cottage is a private vacation home nestled beneath live oaks and magnolias in downtown Ocean Springs. The cottage is within easy walking distance of restaurants, shops, grocery, and harbors and is about 100 yards from the Inner Harbor Park, which has public tennis courts, a boardwalk for bird watching and fishing, and a gazebo for picnicking. From here you can launch your canoe or kayak for paddling around the harbor or out to nearby Deer Island. World famous Shearwater Pottery is just beyond the harbor, a pleasant walk from the cottage down a live-oak-lined street and across the little Outer Harbor bridge, a distance of about a quarter mile. The internationally renown Walter Anderson Museum of Art is six blocks away, and the new Frank Geary-designed George Ohr Museum is just across the bay bridge in Biloxi.

The fishing is great. You can bring your own boat (there's room in the driveway) and launch it from the free public boat ramp at the outer edge of the harbor (less than a mile away) or arrange for a fishing charter or a private guide to take you out to nearby Horn and Ship islands, part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore wilderness area, The National Seashore museum, picnic areas, and Park Service boat launch are about two miles away. The Biloxi Bay Bridge with its pedestrian walkway and bicycle path is about a mile away, a perfect place for sunsets. There two golf courses in Ocean Springs, the closest about two miles away (Gulf Hills Golf Club) and another, about five miles away (St. Andrew's Golf Club). There are others in nearby Biloxi and Gautier.

The cottage has a very private screened porch looking out at live oaks, sago palms, and camellias. The porch furniture includes a rocker, an old-fashioned glider, chaises, and dining table and chairs. This is a great place to enjoy the morning bird symphony. The house is newly remodeled and has porcelain tile throughout with Oriental and Mexican rugs. The kitchen is well furnished for people who like to cook and entertain. A bi-weekly farmers market in nearby Biloxi provides fresh vegetables year-round, and the Ocean Springs Saturday market offers organic produce, local food specialties, and live music.

Ocean Springs is the oldest French settlement on the Gulf Coast, founded in 1699 by the LeMoyne brothers, the younger of whom later went on down the coast to found New Orleans. It’s a town of live oaks, magnolias, small shops, and art galleries and contrasts sharply with the condos and casinos to the west. Visitors come for bird-watching, fishing, uncrowded family beaches, and to visit the Walter Anderson Museum of Art and Shearwater Pottery. Biloxi casinos are two miles away. Beaches, restaurants, grocery, shops, and museums are less than a mile away, so this is a great town for bicycling and walking. New Orleans is about 90 miles away, an easy day trip; Keesler Air Force Base, 12 miles; and Mobile and Dauphin Island, 50 miles.

The house is handicapped-accessible through the screened porch (one step of about four inches in each doorway). The bathroom won’t accommodate a wheelchair, but a walker is fine. The two bedrooms and the bathroom open onto the same small hall, so the bathroom is just a few steps from the bedrooms.

Although I don't normally take pets, I make exceptions. Please check with me in advance if you have a small dog (under 20 lbs).

I ACCEPT PAYPAL or personal checks. Please note maximum occupancy of six and restrictions regarding smoking. Thanks for looking!

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1995

I'm a New Orleans native living in Atlanta, and I spend as much time as possible in Ocean Springs. I enjoy meeting my vacation renters, who come from all over the world.

Why the Owner Chose Ocean Springs

There's something magical about Ocean Springs. I bought the house within 48 hours of my first visit to the town.

The Unique Benefits of this Cottage

I enjoy the beautiful, green surroundings, the quiet, the friendly neighbors, proximity to the Gulf and to the little harbors and the wildlife there, the art and pottery community, and morning coffee on on the front porch. My favorite walks are across Biloxi bridge or along East Beach at sunset.

My husband and I stayed for a weekend at this house. It was within walking distance to downtown Ocean Springs. The house was comforable, clean and as described. The front porch is great and we enjoyed relaxing. We would recommend this property to anyone staying in Ocean Springs. Ocean Springs is a lovely, quaint small town. We loved attending the annual art festival. The owner was very helpful and returned our deposit check very quickly. We had a great time.

Quiet and Peaceful

Guest: CoCo (New Orleans, LA.)
Date of Stay: 05/27/11 Review Submitted: 06/01/11

We just returned from our Memorial Day weekend stay at Rosemarie's cottage. We took my elderly parents, who needed a place with no stairs etc. They got around very well here, the home is spacious and comfortable. There are 3 different living spaces in the house, one for TV watching, another living area for visiting, and a screened in porch for taking in nature with a view of 2 gorgeous oak trees. The surroundings are quiet and peaceful, yet it is near the beach, harbor and downtown Ocean Springs, We highly recommend a visit to this home. Thanks Rosemarie!

Wonderful stay

Guest: Gulf Coast Visitor (Chester, CA)
Date of Stay: 05/07/11 Review Submitted: 05/22/11

Our week in May at the Green Cottage was delightful. We stayed with our daughter and family which included a two year old and a four year old. Ocean Springs is a terrific town with museums great restaurants and convenient access to Biloxi. The owner is great to work with and the cottage is exactly as described. The location is very convenient to shopping, several very nice parks with playgrounds, the harbor and of course well maintained access to the gulf beach with a small water park, playground and two fishing piers. The cottage is nicely furnished with a well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds and a marvelous screened porch from which to watch birds which frequent the centuries old oak tree in the front yard. We also used the screened porch as an activity center for the boys. In addition there were two of the cutest little armadillos rooting in the front yard when we arrived an we had the pleasure of a nocturnal visit from a small fox. The turtle who appears for a snack at the back door charmed us all.

Lovely Getaway

Guest: greets (Chicago, IL)
Date of Stay: 03/01/11 Review Submitted: 04/28/11

We stayed at this cottage for a month this spring. It's a great location in an idyllic coastal town. The cottage is clean and comfortable with a screened porch where you can watch everyone go by but where your own privacy is protected by the lovely trees and plantings that surround the property. This place has everything you need for a great vacation. Owner is thoughtful and accommodating. . Turtles come by for a handout as do the hummingbirds. We would recommend to friends and family and we will be going back.

The Best Thanksgiving!

Guest: Elle (North Mississippi)
Date of Stay: 11/24/10 Review Submitted: 03/07/11

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving in Ocean Springs! In fact, my daughter recently asked if we could run away to the house Ocean Springs every holiday! We ate at The Shed in Van Cleve the first night-those folks really know BBQ! Thanksgiving Day we walked to the wonderful Broomes Grocery for a few last minute Thanksgiving needs, then spent the day at the beach and walking the Biloxi Bridge. We prepared the most amazing dinner-shrimp scampi from local shrimp caught by a neighbor ($3 lb and delicious!) and crab cakes from local crab meat-the kitchen had everything we needed-it was perfect! Friday we visited art galleries, had a wonderful lunch at a local restaurant and caught a movie (it was raining). The trip was wonderful and the house was just perfect for our family, myself, my husband, our kids (18 and 9) and my mother! We played board games on the wonderful front porch-which is also where we ate our Thanksgiving dinner! Can't wait to visit again.

One of the loveliest places...

Guest: Kat and Thomas (Denver, CO)
Date of Stay: 01/27/11 Review Submitted: 03/03/11

The cottage was warm and inviting - funky decor, comfy beds and a brilliant kitchen. The huge backyard was perfect for stretching, sunbathing and evening cocktails. From the inside it felt like living in a secret garden, surrounded by happy oak trees and flowering shrubs. We loved the sunset walk to East beach and watching the egrets fly in over the harbor. We can’t say enough about this place! It was an inspiring getaway. Oh, and the screened-in porch was such a delight! Thank you. We hope to return.

Cozy Private Little Cottage

Guest: P & MA (Greenville, NC)
Date of Stay: 09/15/10 Review Submitted: 02/24/11

This place, and the owner, are wonderful. The kitchen is very well equipped and laundry is available on site. The single bathroom is clean and cute, with lots of fluffy towels. Both bedrooms have comfortable double beds and there's a futon in the den as well. The house is secluded from the street by bushy shrubs that leave you feeling as if you're in your own private world. The comfortable screened in porch runs across the front of the house and feels like an outdoor living room. Curious turtles come by to visit and live there too! Downtown Ocean Springs is less than a mile away and there's lots of great places to explore there.

Owner response:Pete and Mary Ann were the only nice thing to come out of the BP disaster. They were in Ocean Springs to work on surveillance of the extent of the spill and rented my house. They were super folks, lovely guests, and I hope they decide to move to the coast permanently when the oil mess is finally cleaned up. They'd be great neighbors.
