This open air, one bedroom apartment is on the second floor of a period two family home in the heart of Newport's Yachting Village. Our guests will enjoy our newly renovated kitchen with a counter and stools as the transition to the living room, which has a sliding glass door out to the small deck with 2 chairs. The deck faces south, so the sun warms and brightens the living room and kitchen area.

The location is one key to the appreciation our guests have for the apartment. Walk to the foot of our street and you are on Historic Thames Street. Cross Thames Street to walk down to the docks of Newport Harbor.
Head to the left on Thames for shops and restaurants (Seafood, Thai, Tapas, Italian, French and many others unique to Newport), the International Yacht Restoration School and King Park, a wonderful picnic spot especially good for catching sunsets.
Turn right on Thames and within a 5 minute walk you are at Bowen's and Bannister's Wharves, the center of Newport's shopping and dining district. Another 5 minute walk brings you into historic Washington Square, with the movie theater, historic homes and more restaurants and shops.

* Walk east to Bellevue Avenue, Cliff Walk and Easton's Beach.

* Catch a sunset sail on one of several fine yacht cruises

* Walk just a few blocks to tour the Gilded Age Mansions

* Go next door to see The Samuel Whitehorn Museum

With miles of bountiful beaches and trails, centuries-old homes, historic landmarks, bustling waterfronts, year-round festivals and events, and hundreds of diverse shops and eateries, Newport has been called the gem of the New England coastline.

Newport was one of the largest cities and busiest seaports in all of Colonial America. Known as the cultural heart of the city, the Old Quarter includes 18th and 19th century buildings, a collection of Colonial homes and museums. Step from the Colonial era to the famed “summer cottages” of America’s Gilded Age, perched along famed Bellevue Avenue. More than a dozen of these palatial homes, many with extraordinary gardens and grounds, have been painstakingly preserved and many are open year round.

***********America's Cup Newport 2012 World Series************

There will be several sites to pick up the launch to get over to Ft. Adams and the America's Cup Village. A couple are just a few minutes walk away. Also, consider renting bicycles or scooters for the day and catch the races from various coastal vantage points.

Current plans call for holding the racing inside Narragansett Bay, with the start/finish line just across the bay at Fort Wetherill State Park on Jamestown with excellent spectator views from the America's Cup Village at Fort Adams, as well as numerous other points on the waterfront. The regatta will give the public an opportunity to watch the world’s top sailors compete in the state-of-the-art AC45 wing-sailed catamarans, which will be the first time the high-tech boats will be raced on the east coast of the U.S.

Why the Owner Chose Newport

When we first moved in, Thames Street was boatyards and ship chandleries. Now it is shops and restaurants, marinas and nightclubs and though we are in the middle of it all, being on a side street allows us to enjoy a quiet not afforded on Thames Street. We can walk to virtually every restaurant in town, some a minute away, others 12. The launch to the Festivals, Goat Island and Jamestown is a four minute walk. Newport and all it has to offer is literally right on our doorstep.

Owner's Map of Newport

We have lived in this house for 32 years, a two family house on a side street off Lower Thames Street. I am a book restorer and my wife, Kristyn, is a professional gardener and Manager in a 105 year old landscape company that caters to Newport's summer residents. I am a sailor with 30,000 offshore miles and Newport is a perfect place for us to indulge in all our interests.

Labor Day Weekend 2011

Guest: MJ (Worcester, MA)
Date of Stay: 09/02/11 Review Submitted: 09/11/11

My husband and I (young 30's) stayed at this Newport VRBO rental apartment for Labor Day Weekend 9/2011. We had an amazing time in Newport and a wonderful experience at the aparment. The aparment is located right in the heart of Newport...set back off the popular Thames Street (major waterfront street with boutiques, restaurants, bars, entertainment, etc). Everything was within walking distance from the apartment. One of the major highlights was that it included a parking pass so we could park our car right on the street outside of the apartment for the duration of the weekend and walk to everything we needed. The apt itself was extemely clean and well appointed. A beautiful kitchen area and open living room....with a small balcony overlooking gardens (perfect for a cup of coffee in the morning). The owners were on sight and very friendly and helpful. This was our first VRBO experience and definitly won't be our last. Wonderful apartment in a fantastic location....and for a price you can't beat. It was a great retreat to return to every night after a busy day of attending weddings and sightseeing. We recommend the Cliff Walk and dinner at the Black Pearl. We highly recommend this rental to others (including our own friends and family) and will probably be back ourselves!

Great rental property!

I just got back from a week stay at this great apartment. The apartment had everything you could need and the owner leaves books of restaurant menus, information and maps that were helpful. The apartment is very clean and in a prime location near all the shops, restaurants, and a short 5 minute walk to the mansions. The owner is easy to work with and helpful if you need anything. I hope to come back and stay next year.

An exceptional week!

Guest: 4sailing (Boise, ID, USA)
Date of Stay: 06/10/11 Review Submitted: 07/06/11

Our week started off a day later than planned because of flight mishaps, but our hosts were so gracious. They made us feel right at home and got us settled in quickly. It was wonderful to be so close to everything. We could walk to everything within a few minutes and thoroughly enjoyed all the things to see. We WILL come back to Newport and I have no doubt we will stay here again!

Lovely accomodations

Guest: Patti C. (Oxford, PA)
Date of Stay: 10/08/10 Review Submitted: 10/12/10

My husband and I just stayed here for a long weekend and the apartment is lovely and absolutely immaculate. It is within walking distance to many great shops, restuarants, bars and wharfs. The owners were very welcoming and even shared some complimentary passes to the Oktoberfest going on that weekend. Their catalogs that they have created with maps and recommended things to see were extremely helpful since this was a surprise getaway for me so I did not get to research the area as I normally would before a trip. The drive along Ocean Drive was breath taking and so we did that often since we were traveling in a convertible but it would be awesome to do by bike or moped as well. I recommend this home to any couple looking to spend a romantic getaway in Newport.

Great Stay at a fraction of the cost

Guest: Trace (Long Island, New York)
Date of Stay: 08/14/10 Review Submitted: 08/17/10

My husband and I stayed here for a weekend with our 5 1/2 month old son. The apartment is absolutely gorgeous! It is very well maintained and stocked with more than what we needed including a pack n play which looked like it was never used until we arrived. The owners even printed their own Newport guide, which had a list of things to do, restaurants and history on the town. The attraction brochures were great too - we didn't even have to go to the Visitor's center. They had everything you could possibly think of and probably more. We didn't get a chance to meet Kristyn since she was out of town, but her neighbor Helen was very nice and gracious. We parked the car and walked everywhere. Wish we had an the opportunity to stay longer - had a lot more exploring that we didn't get a chance to do. All in all, a great stay.

Convenient, Comfortable, Clean and Great Location

Guest: Sportsmgmt (Boston)
Date of Stay: 07/11/10 Review Submitted: 08/11/10

I stayed with my twins boys during this past July, 2010 for 4 days. We had a great time in the unit which was better than represented in both the write up and the pictures. Jim and Kristyn are very nice and accomodating people who provide a lot of insight into the area for both activities and restaurants. The unit is spacious with lots of great amenities and it's very nice to have the rear deck outside space to relax after a long day. You can't beat the location, it's right in the middle of Thames Street and you can walk everywhere within minutes. I am coming back next week for a few days and plan on speaking with the owners about next year. If you are looking for a great place at a great price with a great location, look no further because you've already found it!

A really special "Find" in Newport

Guest: Sailbuddies (Scarborough, Maine, USA)
Date of Stay: 06/01/10 Review Submitted: 06/06/10

My husband and I stayed three nights at this lovely apartment. It's right in the middle of the action in Newport, but because it's up a one-way side street (Dennison St.) off of Thames Street, it's also very quiet. Jim was there to greet us and direct us to a parking space. Jim and Kristyn are wonderful hosts and know everything about where to go and how to get there. You don't have to drive anywhere because everything is right at the end of the street. The apartment is really nice -- we were only the second guests to use the new kitchen and it has everything. Plus, a comfortable bed, a really neat balcony, and great living room with a big tv. Our hosts left us breakfast in the 'fridge and lots of Starbucks coffee. You can't beat the price or the accommodations! We'll definitely be back and recommend our family and friends.
