Bolinas chateau / country house description

The property is totally private. It is on 14 acres which includes woods and pastures with horses. There is ample room to explore right on the grounds. The home is well used, comfortable and ideal for families with children. There are two bedrooms with Queen beds and a back bedroom with bunk beds, a single twin bed and a crib. Every room connects to the outside.

Due to the special nature and privacy of the property and surrounding hills the place has also been used for weddings, retreats, and other special occasions.

We have built a playhouse in the woods where children can play creatively and independently---inspired by the recent book The Last Child in the Woods. This book documents the need for intimate connection to nature and to independent fantasy play for children. The playhouse is surrounded by trails leading to an open meadow of five acres. There is also a suspension bridge!

There is a coop with chickens, ducks and Doc, the rabbit. Young kids can access the coop to collect eggs with parental supervision. Most children spend hours in the chicken coop. There are views of surrounding hills and the Bolinas Lagoon and access to nearby trails in open space and parkland. One mile from the town of Bolinas which has two miles of beachfront and locally caught fish in season, abundant organic produce and Niman meats. The property is also just one mile from the Audubon Canyon Ranch where one can watch seals and all kinds of bird life on Bolinas Lagoon; and 10 miles from Point Reyes Park HQ with its extensive trails, beaches and wildlife.

Our family is very fond of this area. We visit several times a year and have rented several houses in Bolinas itself as well as around Point Reyes and Bodega Bay. This house tops all of them by far for you get far more than a roof when you come here. The reviews before mine describe it very well already - the sheer beauty of the grounds, the sense of serenity, the feeling of returning to what really matters, seeing the kids roam around, run up and down the beautiful rolling meadows, and disappear in the woods, the feeding of chicken and horses, the wonderful dogs - unplugged. Add to this the wonderful hosts and there you have it - a very very special place.

We just celebrated our wedding on the Mornell Estate in Bolinas. The day went off without a hitch! It was exactly what we had envisioned. The setting has so much natural beauty and the property and home have a very peaceful energy. Linda is fantastic! She worked with us from the very beginning, planning every last detail with us, from the lighting to the placement of the bails of hay. A warning to couples who are considering this property for their wedding: it takes an incredible amount of work for the vendors (caterer, property owner, etc.) to pull off a successful wedding celebration. The property isn't normally set up as a typical wedding venue, so Linda spent many many hours prepping. You should also be aware that everything must be brought in: rentals, porta potties, decorations, caterer + kitchen, sound system and microphones, etc. If you who want something rustic, simple, and completely DIY - it's an amazing spot!

We spent two nights here over mother's day weekend with our boys, 9 and 3. The hosts Linda and Stockton were friendly and welcoming. Their hospitality was above expectations. They made themselves available if you needed anything, yet kept their distance so we could enjoy the property. The property was pure beauty in every sense. Words and pictures can only describe so much. One can't help but to feel relaxed, calm and peaceful. The kids enjoyed the animals on site, spent many hours in the chicken coop, played in the Sweet Pea Cottage, and just roamed the meadows. It reminded me of the good old days where kids played outside until the crack of dawn. The history behind the cottage was a fascinating read. I wanted to read more entries and imagined how I might have contributed to the making of the cottage had I discovered it during a previous life. I spent many hours just thinking. This place inspires creativity and imagination. The sound of the rooster in the morning was faint and you wake up feeling blessed to begin a new day. Anyone staying here will not regret it.

Words cannot do this place justice - it must be experienced to be believed. My husband and I and our two young children stayed here with my parents over a long weekend. My children reveled in playing with the friendly golden retrievers, bunnies and chickens. Collecting eggs every morning was a magical experience for them, and they made for a delicious breakfast. We all delighted in feeding the beautiful horses in the pasture. The house itself is beautiful, with hardwood floors, tasteful furnishings, and supremely comfortable bedding. It is not so immaculate as to be unwelcome to children, however. In fact, there are plenty of toys in the children's room to keep them occupied, if they were ever inclined to come inside (which they weren't). The owners, who live on a hill above the property, were friendly, warm, and gracious hosts. They encouraged us to explore the property, with winding forest trails, warm rolling meadows, perfectly-positioned places to sit and relax throughout. Bright, beautiful flowers and lavender are everywhere. A tree swing right out front brought me right back to my own childhood. The cottage in the woods, the suspension bridge - I think we enjoyed them almost as much as my children did! It's hard to describe our experience at this place, other than that we had a magical time and hope to return as soon as we can!

We were in Bolinas for a wedding, and after reading the reviews and chatting with the property owner, we chose this property. The property description is right on! The house is clean, and has tons of open space, and most importantly, is incredibly relaxing. The back patio is huge, and very comfortable with a couch and a table for eating. There is a hammock, and an amazing swing that is tied to a huge oak tree. The sweet pea cottage is cute and fun. It had us wishing we had brought our kids, as this is a place for both kids and adults. The main message is, that this is a place to relax. We got some fresh eggs from the chicken coop, there were also horses, dogs, as well as, 10 golden retriever puppies. We cant wait to come back!!

Beautiful property with plenty of space for kids to run around, the gorgeous cottage in the woods, swings, hot tub, chickens, ducks & rabbits to pet - and tons of beautiful places nearby for hiking or tide pooling. Within driving distance - Point Reyes National Seashore, Mt Tamalpais, Stinson and Bolinas beaches, Audubon Canyon Ranch to view nesting egrets, Duxbury Reef for tide pooling - all within an hour of San Francisco!! The owners were extremely welcoming and very kind with our children. I hope we can stay there again!

This property is beyond description! It's beauty defies words. We chose it for our small, casual but classy wedding. The owner, Linda, put so much work into making the gardens pristine, with solar lights embedded amongst the flowers, the pastures freshly mowed, the home cozy and comfortable for our family, and the kitchen well stocked for cooking. Linda was so kind and patient with my "bride-to-be" questions, details, and requests! For the wedding weekend, we pretended this sacred spot was ours! Such a dream! Linda gave us all the privacy we wanted. Our guests were mesmerized by the setting as we were married under a sturdy, gorgeous oak tree with the Bolinas Lagoon as the backdrop. Emblazoned in our hearts and souls forever!

We have stayed in many vacation rentals finding it the best option for traveling and exploring with kiddos. This property has surpased all others. When you look out you see only beauty. When you explore you feel magic and mystery and open green, fresh air. My little one was entranced with the chickens and rabbits, horses, swings, climbing trees and playhouse. She skipped across the green lawn to explore her mother earth filed with wonder and joy. She woke with eager anticipation of collecting fresh eggs. My husband and I relaxed by the wood fire in the more than comfortable living area. We cooked tasty food in the kitchen stocked with excellent pans and whatever you might need. The hosts went out of their way to help us with an unexpected dilemma - not to mention truely wanting us to be welcomed, comfortable, and participate in the opportunities this unique location provides. I encourage anyone - family, couple or group to land here for a nourishing natural rest. There are beautiful beaches and hikes nearby. Point Reyes in your "backyard". It's worth it.

I can not express how amazing and special this rental is . . . from the rolling hills of the meadow to the glorious flowers in the yard, from the hot tub under a starlit night to the hammock overlooking the Bolinas lagoon, from feeding the horses to collecting fresh eggs. We feel so fortunate to not only have stayed in such a beautiful place but also to have had such generous hosts. They went out of the way to make sure that we had everything we needed while also giving us space for privacy. We spent much of our time outdoors enjoying the bucolic bliss of the property, but the house itself offered dramatic views of stunning trees in the foreground and the everchanging lagoon in the background. The Sweetpea cottage was an amazing bonus space for the kids. The house had everything we needed, and we can’t wait to come back!

                  Year Purchased: 1970

About the owner: I have lived on this property for over 40 years and it is a nurturing and spiritual place for me--compeletly private and still. For people who value those two things it is ideal. We also have built a playhouse in the woods where children can play independently and creatively and there are all kinds of animals on the place. I do not keep up with the callendar--house is rented about half the time--so the best way to enquire about availability is to email me--I am very prompt.

                  Why the Owner Chose Bolinas:
When we saw the property we did not hesitate--it was the ideal place to raise a family....as well as have tranquility as an important aspect of our daily lives.

The Unique Benefits at this Chateau / Country House:
Watching the lagoon for its varied wildlife, gardening, horseback riding, animal care, and sitting in the meadow enjoying a drink at the end of the day.
