Did we enjoy our honeymoon? I guess so! We bought the house!
Located in the rural village of St.Roman de Malegarde, our charming stone walled French maison is the quintessential Provencal experience. This thoughtfully restored 18th century home provides a comfortable base from which to explore the spectacular Cotes du Rhone countryside. Enjoy daily markets and dozens of local wineries, as you meander between picturesque villages and vine-covered hillsides. Close by, you can explore the ancient town of Vaison la Romaine, its many Roman ruins, or visit some famous wine villages such as: Chateauneuf du Papes, Gigondas, Seguret, Cairanne or Rasteau.
Upon arriving in our village, as you make your way up the Grand Rue, please notice the spring fed communal fountain on your right and the town lavoir on your left. White shutters on natural river-rock walls and fragrant blooming lavender will greet you. The rustic open-beamed ceiling and traditional tile floor will make you feel at home. The second story and terrace offer pleasant views. A fully equipped kitchen, dining room, and living room comprise the downstairs. Two bedrooms and the bath make up the second level.
Imagine coming home from the local markets, your shopping basket overflowing with fresh produce, meats, seafood, cheese, olives, and just-baked baguettes. Dine in our large dining room (seats eight) or al fresco outside, on the terrace, or put your groceries away and visit one of many local restaurants. After dinner, the rounded fireplace invites you to relax.

La Petite Maison est un petit peu de ciel. We were there in September 2011 and it was like a scene out of an old French movie. It just felt as if we had slipped back into a simpler and completely unhurried period in time. The weather was incredible and there were days when we would make a quick market-day trip (small Ste. Cécile and larger Vaison la Romaine were our favorites), come back and just enjoy the day “at home.” A bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape, crusty bread, olives, cheese, salumi and the best candy ever all made for the quintessential French picnic on the cute little back patio. These were true moments of perfection. It was harvest time in the vineyards and that made it even more like a picture postcard. If you love wine touring, this is the place for you. Right on the Côte du Rhône and nothing but vineyards as far as you can see. The great thing about St. Roman de Malegarde is that it is off the beaten path, away from the busier parts of the Côte du Rhône but just minutes away from all the great wineries, bistros, markets (you just have to see the flea market in Nyons!), and vistas of Provence. We were there for two weeks and had to tear ourselves away when it was time to go. The house has rustic charm but all the amenities needed to be comfortable. Lots of room to spread out in (if you have ever stayed in a European hotel room you know what I am talking about). If you go, there are some things you have to add to your itinerary: Visit Mt. Ventoux, the highest point in Provence and filled with colorful, ecstatically happy and exhausted bicyclists. On a clear day you can see the Alps and the Pyrenees. Any city on market day. Lunch at Chez Claudette’s, a one-minute walk from the house (make a reservation or miss out). Kayaking on the Sorge – a gentle glide down a lovely river and right next to the cute, cute, cute village of L’Isle Sur la Sorge. The Roman ruins at Orange and the medieval city of Avignon. Actually, this list could go on for a very long time. Such a wonderful place! We will definitely go back.

This house really feels like your own home during the stay. No matter what you feel like doing, there is a cozy spot in the house for it -- cooking, reading, sunning, writing postcards, you name it! The backyard terrace is perfect for al fresco dining. The village is peaceful and quiet and the location is convenient for touring the many charming medieval towns and plentiful vineyards. When can we return??!
Recommended for:Romantic getaway, sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children.
