Location: Peaks Island, Portland & Casco Bay, Maine, USA (20 minute ferry ride from Portland)
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 1 Bath (Sleeps 6)
Keywords: Vacation House
Recently renovated cottage retains its classic charm: wide pine board floors, butcher block counter tops, nautical and rustic decorative touches throughout. Enjoy quiet mornings at the breakfast bar in the fully equipped kitchen. The living room, with its open floor plan and cathedral ceiling, is perfect for classic board games in the evenings. The bedrooms combine modern, comfortable mattresses with rustic quilts and antique bed frames. The back deck, enclosed in lattice, offers outdoor privacy. Fall asleep to the distant sounds of foghorns. In the words of Rachel Field, "Once you have slept on an island, you will never be quite the same."
Ideal location at the end of a street, surrounded by trees with wooded lots on three sides, the cottage feels secluded in the woods, yet is five minutes walk to the ferry wharf, grocery store, restaurants and beaches. Enjoy the leisurely pace of Peaks Island life with all of the attractions of Portland only 20 minutes away by ferry: the best of both worlds.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
I teach tennis for a living, a game I learned on Peaks Island. I look forward to my weeks on Peaks Island all year. I always sleep better to the rhythm of foghorns and bell buoys, sounding out in the channel. Family time at Shoot the Moon cottage is a highlight of my year, every year.
Why the Owner Chose Peaks Island
I grew up summers on Peaks: swimming in Casco Bay, hunting sea glass on the backshore, building forts in the woods. I wanted my kids to know this beautiful, quiet place that remains largely unspoiled and full of warm, genuine people. And my parents live there year round too!
The Unique Benefits of this House
We love to walk to the beach, the store and ferry for quick jaunts to Portland. We eat our favorite Maine foods--lobster, red hot dogs, wild blueberry muffins and whoopie pies--at our breakfast bar in the kitchen. And in the evenings, we play bocce ball on the back lawn, watch movies from our video collection, and play board games. It's a place full of simple, family pleasures.

Just spent two weeks at Shoot the Moon and we are ready to plan our next trip! The house is set off from the street giving it a more private feel with a generous backyard for the kids to throw a baseball around...The house is comfy and, particularly on rainy days, the cathedral ceilings in the living room create a comfortable open space so hanging indoors for a bit is relaxing. We spent many evenings on the back deck while the kids were sleeping on the second floor out of earshot from conversation. Shoot the Moon's location is perfect--just a short walk into own for ice cream, morning papers & coffee....or to jump on the ferry to head into Portland for the day or to grab dinner. Great value for the Peaks experience....we highly recommend Shoot the Moon.

We spent a week here with our two small children in Summer 2010, and can't wait to return in 2011. The cottage is filled with light and has a spacious yard, as well as a comfortable, open living room and kitchen area. Not only is it just a short walk into town (to library, restaurants, bike rental shop, general store, and ferry), but there is also a small playground just across the street, which is really ideal for families with preschoolers or toddlers. We loved hearing the fog horns at night, and appreciated being tucked on a quiet side street, but still incredibly close to everything. Our children had a fantastic time playing in the tide pools at a lovely sandy beach recommended by the owners. This is a relaxing place to escape from our hectic, busy lives! A wonderful cottage on a very special island!
Recommended for:Families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, tourists without a car.

We spent a fabulous week here in August of 2009. The house is comfortable, clean, and more than ample room for adults and kids. The property is perfectly situated to give you a sense of having your own private space, but is close to EVERYTHING! Owners are great to work with, too! We will definitely rent again in the future, just a question of how much time we can squeeze out of our busy schedules to get there again!!

This was the perfect place to spend our honeymoon. Beautiful house, quiet and secluded but really close to everything you want. Fabulous kitchen, nice light, clean and comfortable. Peaks is a lovely little island, close to Portland, pretty stone and sand beaches, buy lobster fresh out of the water or whatever else you need at the little market, several decent restaurants - a fantastic getaway. The owners are very helpful in planning your trip and accomodating to your needs. And the price is right! We'll be back for sure.

You couldn't ask for a better house on Peaks Island. House is well maintained, beautiful, clean. You can walk to ferry, market, coffee shop, and beach, yet house is on a quiet cul de sac. We will probably stay here again. We used to go to Cape Cod but now prefer Peaks.
