Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2000
Hi; Sam and Bobby here. We're Northern Virginia transplants to Wild and Wonderful West Virginia! Ten years ago we purchased a weekend cabin near Harpers Ferry in the mountains (Shannondale) with a 50 mile view of the Shenandoah Valley below. We fell in love with this beautiful area and wonderful local people, and it didn't take long to switch from weekenders to permanent residents! I quickly discovered an abandoned "shack" a short hike through the woods below our cabin - no doors or windows, holes in the roof, misc. critters living inside, including a few non-living. I purchased this adjoining property and embarked on a 3 month restoration project to turn it into my art studio. New roof, new heating, new plumbing, new windows, skylights - new everything! Shangri-la-de-da!! Thus, "Moonridge" was created! All of our friends and family who stayed at Moonridge have absolutely LOVED IT, so we decided to share our delightful little hide-away with all of you! Come, relax, and enjoy! Let us pamper you a bit!
Why the Owner Chose Harpers Ferry
We love the natural beauty of this area, the wildlife, the cultural heritage, the history, the quaint little towns, plus we're only an hour from Fairfax, Va., so even though we feel really remote, there is easy access to the big city. It's really the best of all worlds!
The Unique Benefits of this Cabin
We think you will enjoy - as we do - making the half hour trek up to the Appalachian Trail, whether just for an hour or two or an all day hike into historic Harpers Ferry. We highly recommend the "Maryland Heights" hike to the top of the mountain where you will have an incredible view of the town of Harpers Ferry and the two rivers - Shenandoah and Potomac - merging. This is a half day round trip hike atop the mountain that the Amtrak train tunnels through, on its way to DC and beyond. (see my webshots site given in the "other amenities" section of this listing for photos from the top!)
For the less hearty, a short hike to "Jefferson Rock" right in the midst of historic Harpers Ferry will allow you to share the view that Thomas Jefferson said was "worth a trip across the ocean" to see! Or ~ spend a day at the Charles Town races and slots and be sure to visit the incredible "Terrace Restaurant" where you will have the perfect terraced view of the horse races, including a monitor at your table for closer observation and a buffet that you will long remember!

Moonridge Cottage was even more than I had hoped for. My boyfriend and I wanted to do something special to celebrate our Christmas, and thought an out-of-the-way (but convenient) cabin in the woods would be perfect. And it was. I was delighted with the special care that Bobby took to make the cabin cozy and festive. Upon our arrival, the wood stove was burning, the tree decorated, and wine waiting on the table. Fresh bread was served to complete the homey atmosphere. Bobby could not have been more accomodating with our early arrival and late departure. Our stay was wonderful, and will return in the spring to enjoy the next phase of mother nature.

We had the privilege of staying in both of Bobbi's cabins, The Inn and Long Last and Moonridge Cottage. First of all, she is both wonderful and helpful. Any minor problems are addressed quickly. Both cabins are delightful and comfortable. We particularly liked the kitchen at The Inn, since we cooked pretty elaborate dinners and the kitchen was so well appointed. The beds were really comfortable in both cabins and we slept really well. We enjoyed the screened in porch at Moonridge. If you have children, do rent The Inn. A treasure hunt for kids. The location made is easy to access the Appalachian trail and we hiked every day--spectacular. Thank you Bobbi!!

The house and property are beautiful. The inside of the house is decorated very cozy and we were greated by classical music, twinkling lights and very good whole wheatbread with wine.It was nice also to be able to take the family dog! My only negative comment was that the property was steep and the entrance was a little difficult for my 84 year-old aunt to navigate with a cane and hip replacement. However dont let that stop you from enjoying this wonderful place- I would definitely stay there again!

We had a great week staying at Moonridge. This is a nice little cabin which is well furnished. This is a great spot to use as a hub for the surrounding activities. We stayed super-busy throughout the week as we traveled to D.C. via the MARC train from Harpers Ferry {HF is about 20 minutes from Moonridge), hiked the long side of Maryland Heights, hiked an 11 mile stretch of the AT from Gathland to Harpers Ferry, canoed, kayaked and swam in the Shenandoah River, and various other adventures during our length of stay. I and my 2 sons especially enjoyed the sreened porch. We slept nightly on the porch (such great weather for that) and the other family members slept in the house. We also enjoyed the library, what a collection! Bobby was very helpful and a joy to do business with. Thank you Sam and Bobby for the good experience! Our family was well pleased.

It's always amazing to stay; so close to DC [not much over an hour] -- right up the hill from the Shenendoah River, and too too gorgeous. Great walks, too -- on the roads or up on the Appalachian Trail! Less than 1/2 mile away by foot! And when the weather closes in, what a warm, cozy, and beautiful place to be by the fire. We'll be back again and again.

Please don't stay at this cabin - I want to keep it all to myself! Moonridge was everything I imagined, plus more - for my autumn retreat in the woods. The cabin is adorable and rustic with all the amenities. The owners are lovely and accommodating - but not intrusive. Sigh - I would go back right now. (That said - it is a cabin - and if you are going to freak out about a bug or a draft then stay at a hotel - it's not a good match for you.) Thanks again for a perfect week - I can't wait to come back!

Oct. 17, 2010 Dear Sam and Bobby, What a lovely stay we had here in your mountain cabin - from the second we stepped out of the car we knew we were in for a treat. We got so excited when we walked through the door - the details throughout the cabin added such a great touch in creating a true mountain cabin setting for us! We were with our dear friends, and we all had fun picking out our favorite corners of the cabin. i love the swing on the porch and the blue jean curtains in the room with the twin beds; Rosie loved the red lights and liked the general feel of the cabin. Mike loved the wood burning stove; William loved the porch. We just thought the place was so much fun; we loved our stay, and being here with dear friends made it all that more special. The setting right in the woods was spectacular. Bobby, your art work all around was lovely; we especially liked the portrait of the little child peeking through the window! This is a place worth coming back to! Thank you, Mike, Marlene, William and Rosie

I havnt had time for a vacation in the last two years so this was a great place to get away to. Once we found our way into this very quiet and secluded home. The living area was very comfortable but I liked the open air porch from coffee in the morning to a glass of wine at night it was my place to sit and relax after a busy day of sightseeing .Thank you for all the things you did for us.

Moonridge Cottage is everything advertised and so much more. Bobby and Sam are the perfect hosts, and everything is so quiet and peaceful. There is so much history in Harper's Ferry and the surrounding area, and after a long day of sightseeing it was bliss to go "home" to Moonridge. Bobby and Sam were always available with recommendations, and even accurate hand drawn maps, but never intrusive. We will remember the deer we saw frolicking in the yard, the unmatched view from the mountains, and Bobby's homemade doughtnuts. Thank you so much for a awesome vacation!!
