Moonridge Cottage was even more than I had hoped for. My boyfriend and I wanted to do something special to celebrate our Christmas, and thought an out-of-the-way (but convenient) cabin in the woods would be perfect. And it was. I was delighted with the special care that Bobby took to make the cabin cozy and festive. Upon our arrival, the wood stove was burning, the tree decorated, and wine waiting on the table. Fresh bread was served to complete the homey atmosphere. Bobby could not have been more accomodating with our early arrival and late departure. Our stay was wonderful, and will return in the spring to enjoy the next phase of mother nature.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

We rented Moonridge for our kids' spring break (they are 11 and 8). The cottage was adorable and Bobby took good care of us. It snowed when we arrived, which was fantastic, and Bobby had someone plowing the drive the next morning. There was no stress, no worries. We loved the area - we went to Harpers Ferry 3 times, as well as Shepherdstown (which we loved), Charles Town (which was OK), and Antietum. The area has incredible history and there is tons to do. The cottage is warm and cozy, which was nice, since it was chilly. I loved having wifi too. Thanks, Bobby.Recommended for: Romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

This past weekend, my husband, 3 year old daughter, two dogs and I went to Moonridge for a weekend away from our busy work lives and the bustle of the city. From the moment we arrived we knew we were in for a treat. The cabin is PERFECTLY decorated..not too much not too little rustic decor. Bobbi's paintings are just fantastic and being in an artist studio was great. The wood burning stove kept us toasty and gave a snuggly vibe. Our 10 year old and 8 year old dogs loved being there and exploring the Civil War battlefields. My little girl was in her glory with all the toys, (doll house, rocking horse, lincoln logs...and much more) She also loved finding all the pigs which fondly decorate her bedroom. Our master bedroom was delicately decorated and was lovely. To sum it up for you, our daughter said "Mommy can we stay at the Red House for ever and ever?" A question that ran through our minds as well!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

We were looking for a quiet mountain retreat for Thanksgiving weekend and Moonridge was just the place. The kitchen had everything we needed and Bobby even provided a roasting pan for our turkey. The property description is completely accurate and Moonridge is just secluded enough to make you feel like you are really out in the woods and close enough to Charles Town and other local sights to allow for sight-seeing with ease. The hugh porch seems more like a tree house and the views down the valley below are impressive. The roustic cabin is clean and well-maintained and everything is there for you to enjoy a home cooked meal and a bottle wine while setting near the wood-burning stove on a cool night. Would recommend without hesitation to my friends and relatives.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.

Moonridge beckons so we flee the city eager for rest We set out from Baltimore, ready for our quest Up the steep driveway we come, car slip sliding on leaves Orange and yellow Fall colors a tapestry weaved The wood is dry, the fire warms up the night We pour strong drinks, feet up by the dwindling light A herd of deer stopped by as if for us they were wishing For a calm and fruitful morn of Shenandoah fishing The river shared a few bass with its guests But fear not locals we didn’t land the biggest or best Until later that eve when we rode into town To catch Taphouse Burgers and beers to chase down A hike in the woods was just what was needed We didn’t get far, but we tarried, not speeded The leaves we gathered, for reasons unclear And some ended up on sticks, like a spear Our weekend was magical, relaxing and dandy We didn’t think once about Hurricane Sandy.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

Moonridge is a charming cabin located in a beautiful woodsy setting. Bobby is the perfect host. We felt so pampered with the delicious homemade bread and a bottle of wine to greet us. My daughter and I were spending a couple of days together and Moonridge was a quiet retreat for us. The inside of the cabin has a whimsical yet cozy feeling with lots of books to look at and some very nice original artwork. In addition to the wonderful cabin there are so many activities from hiking or rafting on the Shenandoah to the historic Harpers Ferry and nearby civil war battlefields. Also a number of nice restaurants within easy distance. I would highly recommend Moonridge Cottage and would definitely come back.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, families with teenagers, families with young children, sightseeing.

A cute and cozy cottage in a very peaceful wooded setting. We found the location to be very conveniently situated for the activities we wanted to do during the week (tubing, horseback riding, historical park at Harper's Ferry, visiting wineries....) The photos associated with the listing give an accurate idea of the cottage and its amenities. Was glad towels are provided. Bobby lives close by so checked in on us frequently to ensure that we had everything that we needed and were comfortable. Would recommend this property particularly to couples looking for a romantic weekend getaway or couples with up to 2 kids; it would be a stretch to sleep 6.Recommended for: Adventure seekers.

Bobby's cabin is absolutely charming. It is obvious she cares about the space and wants to share that with others. There is so much care and attention to detail in the entire space. That being said, we felt so welcome when we arrived. The view from the back deck is stunning, the entire layout of the cabin is very well thought out... we hope to come back with friends to share the relaxing experience we had there. Finally, she let us come to the cabin last minute, which was very kind of her. It's a dog friendly cabin, too, so those who want to be with their buddies for a weekend away, it's just perfect. Thank you, Bobby!Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Our family had a very nice time in Moonridge Cabin. Bobby is a great hostess who made us feel right at home. There are lots of cupboards with games, toys and movies for small kids to explore. The screened-in porch was awesome. We took several long walks up the road and around the mountain, enjoying the fresh air and flowers growing along the road. Also enjoyed one of the swimming holes, though the current was a bit strong for little ones (bring a life jacket or plan on holding hands the whole time). Just a note that the town of Harpers Ferry and the national park are at least a 20 minute drive from the cabin, as are the big stores. Also, hiking and swimming are driving distance away (you can't hike in and out of the cabin). All in all a great and relaxing place to stay.Recommended for: Age 55+, romantic getaway, families with young children.

About the owner: Hi; Bobby here. We're Northern Virginia transplants to Wild and Wonderful West Virginia! About 15 years ago we purchased a weekend cabin near Harpers Ferry in the mountains (Shannondale) with a 50 mile view of the Shenandoah Valley below. We fell in love with this beautiful area and wonderful local people, and it didn't take long to switch from weekenders to permanent residents! I quickly discovered an abandoned 'shack' a short hike through the woods below our cabin - no doors or windows, holes in the roof, misc. critters living inside, including a few non-living. I purchased this adjoining property and embarked on a 3 month restoration project to turn it into my art studio. New roof, new heating, new plumbing, new windows, skylights - new everything! Shangri-la-de-da!! Thus, 'Moonridge' was created! All of our friends and family who stayed at Moonridge have absolutely LOVED IT, so we decided to share our delightful little hide-away with all of you! Come, relax, and enjoy! Let me pamper you a bit!
Why the Owner Chose Harpers Ferry:
We love the natural beauty of this area, the wildlife, the cultural heritage, the history, the quaint little towns, plus we're only an hour from Fairfax, Va., so even though we feel really remote, there is easy access to the big city. It's really the best of all worlds!
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
We think you will enjoy - as we do - making the half hour trek up to the Appalachian Trail, whether just for an hour or two or an all day hike into historic Harpers Ferry. We highly recommend the 'Maryland Heights' hike to the top of the mountain where you will have an incredible view of the town of Harpers Ferry and the two rivers - Shenandoah and Potomac - merging. This is a half day round trip hike atop the mountain that the Amtrak train tunnels through, on its way to DC and beyond. (see my webshots site given in the 'other amenities' section of this listing for photos from the top!)
For the less hearty, a short hike to 'Jefferson Rock' right in the midst of historic Harpers Ferry will allow you to share the view that Thomas Jefferson said was 'worth a trip across the ocean' to see! Or ~ spend a day at the Charles Town races and slots and be sure to visit the incredible 'Terrace Restaurant' where you will have the perfect terraced view of the horse races, including a monitor at your table for closer observation and a buffet that you will long remember!
