Reef House on Tancook Island is so named for its location on the Long Reef secluded on the pristine Southern shore of Nova Scotia's Big Tancook Island. The cottage and it's surroundings offer guests a rare opportunity of both modern convenience and splendid isolation. Reef House is a restored fisherman's cottage. In centuries past there were hundreds of homes dotting this coastline. Now, Reef House is the only home remaining in this area of the island. It is the location that makes this such a magical place. Wildlife abounds. You can observe dozens of bird species including eagle, osprey, and ring-neck pheasant; seal and whale are often seen from the beach. There are miles of trails through the forest along the coast that are ideal for day hikes.
Tancook is a barrier island and has an unusually mild climate due to the sweep of the Gulf Stream along the southern coast of Nova Scotia. Summers are warm and comfortable and winters mild.
The ocean view from the house is spectacular and the walk to the beach is only a few hundred feet. The rhythmic sound of waves washing the beach will quickly calm you. The sound of the sea is everywhere. Nestled into a protected glen and surrounded by meadows and woodlands is the cottage. There is a living room, dining room, fully equipped kitchen, and full bath on the first floor. Two bedrooms are on the second floor. You need only open your eyes to watch the ocean sunrise from you bed through the picture window. It is truly among the most beautiful places on Earth to watch the new day begin. There is telephone service and Internet is available, though both are sinful intrusions.
It's the best of everything. You can relax on an island hideaway in a charming secluded cottage and also experience the culture and craft of nearby Chester with the regularly scheduled ferry that runs throughout the day, seven days a week. It's an easy ferry connection to the mainland and the ferry ride itself is a wonderful tour of the archipelago of Mahone Bay.
Re-open a connection with the land and the sea. The salt air, whistle of the wind in the spruce and the smell of wild blossoms will rejuvenate your spirit and sooth your soul.
Guests are invited to share the cottage for periods of two weeks or more. Note the monthly rates are discounted.
Those with a desire to stay at Reef House are asked to forward a brief summary of the number of guests, length of stay and most importantly, their desires and expectations of the visit to the island and Reef House. Reef House is not a hotel; there are no nightly or weekend guests accepted.
Reef House is unique. Guests invited to stay at the house are those having a 'like mind' and seeking a special kind of experience in a natural environment. Reef House is not the Hamptons and one shouldn't expect to find a Starbucks on the island. More requests are passed over than accepted.
