This past June I booked Wood and Water for a week-long family reunion: a total of seven adults and four young kids staying under one roof. We enjoyed everything about the place. The sunsets were spectacular. The water frontage was great (we brought boats and also used the paddleboat and canoe). The property is very well maintained and up to date. All-around excellent and accurately described in the VRBO listing. When we had a problem (couldn't find enough life jackets for the kids) the owners responded swiftly to my phone call and got us what we needed. Proximity to wineries and the beautiful villages and hills of the Finger Lakes made it a great vacation, especially for the oenophiles among us. A couple of things to be aware of. The neighbor's elderly labrador retriever likes to come over and use the lawn. Also, there was an inexplicable pile of finely broken glass at the NW corner of the house. These factors made us unwilling to let the kids wander around in bare feet. Also, as some have noted, the walls and floors are a single layer of pine, sometimes with knotholes. This means that sound carries very well through the house. Not a problem, but something to be aware of. We carefully followed cleaning instructions and replaced a couple of minor kitchen articles that we broke (2-3 glasses and a spatula) and the owners swiftly returned our security deposit without any subtractions. Everyone liked Wood and Water, and we hope to stay here again. :) As I said before, the wineries were great to visit. Wiemer (other side of the lake) makes some of the finest white wines in the US (especially the dry riesling and chardonnay - wow). Geneva is a pretty town, especially around Hobart & William Smith College. Sonnenberg Gardens and Watkins Glen are within striking distance. And the lake is great, especially for rowing.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, girls getaway, sightseeing.

My family and I needed a place to stay near Geneva, NY during the multi-day events celebrating a family wedding. We also brought our kids with us, and while travel with children isn't typically a barrier, multiple days in a single hotel room is what we wanted to avoid--in addition to the hotel prices. We found Wood & Water and thought it would easily fit our needs. Turns out it exceeded our expectations. To begin, we traveled from Michigan by car, driving through the night, and arriving early Friday morning. The house was easy to find in the dark and The Harringtons were very accommodating to our middle-of-the-night arrival time (it helped that we arrived in the middle of the week during a slow season). The house is beautiful, with a magnificent view on the Sunset side of Seneca lake. When we weren't driving around, getting to receptions and rehearsals, we sat in the living room and watched the clouds roll in. The house had everything we needed: full kitchen, washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board. They had a TV (with Dish) and DVD player so we could watch movies at night. Had it been warmer, the canoe and paddle board and lakeside deck would've been awesome. But it was October, so instead, we walked down the hill and enjoyed hot coffee and cider while the waves crashed against shore. It was just like being at home... except not at home, in New York. We would highly recommend again.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway.

Very nice home with plenty of amenities in a beautiful setting. However, did find the steep descent to the beach and dock area rather difficult to negotiate. The owners, Kevin and Lisa were most pleasant and helpful before, and during our stay.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, adventure seekers, sightseeing, romantic getaway.

We had a great stay at Wood & Water and were happy with all aspects of our rental. The location was convenient to Geneva and HWS; the setting on the lake was wonderful. The house is simple, clean and comfortable. The owner was great to work with and responded quickly to any questions I had. I would highly recommend this rental to a friend or relative - in fact, we hope to return next year!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing.

NEW RENOVATION/INSULATION: Please note that we are currently insulating the ceilings upstairs to provide a better sound barrier and privacy. Please note that both bathrooms have been renovated; the downstairs with a natural marble shower, and upstairs with natural marble shower walls and traditional tub.Did you find this review helpful? The ladies in my family take an annual trip to Seneca Lake for the "Deck the Halls" Wine Tour. We have been renting homes for the last few years (opposed to hotels) and this past November (2011) was our first time renting Wood & Water. We arrived Friday night, in the dark... I would suggest looking up the address and printing back-up directions online, as GPS loses the route close to the lake. The house was ready for our arrival with the heat going and all rooms equipped with fresh linen. The interior of the house was unique and beautiful featuring all exposed wood. Each room was spacious and the openness of the common area was very nice, there are also several bathrooms, which is a luxury with a group of 9 women! When we woke up the next morning we realized how much missed arriving in the dark! We looked out the windows to a gorgeous view, directly overlooking the lake. A group of us went to explore the dock and then ventured out for a jog - the neighborhood is very pretty and serene. The only feature of the house that I would be aware of, is that sound carries and the ceilings are open, meaning you can hear what is going on in all rooms, primarily upstairs. This did not bother us at all, but is something to be aware of. Lisa was a joy to work with and was very responsive to all our questions and requests. We will hopefully be back next year to enjoy the home again on our next annual Wine Trip!Recommended for: Girls getaway.

We walked into a lakehouse that was just what we were looking for. The description and photos were accurate. Secluded and private but close to ammenities. Very clean house and big enough for our children, grandchildren, and friends. The property was awesome with the house deck, beach, dock, outside furniture, firepit on the beach, and fun boats. We got the master bedroom and we loved that we didnt have to share our bathroom (jacuzzi tub). The grandchildren and their parents had the spacious upstairs bedrooms and two other bathrooms. If there was one negative comment; from the lack of floor sound insulation, downstairs we could hear and feel people walking around upstairs. And the upstairs bedrooms had the same problem with lack of wall insulation. Other positives were the shopping, wineries, restaurants, waterparks, etc. were close. We had an outstanding dinner at Geneva-on-the-Lake. Visited many wineries, shopped in Geneva and the Waterloo Outlet Mall. The grandchildren enjoyed a day at Roseland Water Park. We all were sad to have this vacation come to an end and hope we can enjoy this wonderful lakehouse again. A big thank you to Lisa and Kevin for this wonderful opportunity.Recommended for: Families with young children, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway.

Why the Owner Chose Geneva:
We purchased this home from a family who built it together by hand, and we hope to maintain the wonderfully warm and inviting feel. The view of the lake from this home is so inspirational, the waters clean, refreshing and replenishing. Besides relaxing and taking in the beautiful surroundings, there are various water sports to be enjoyed --boating, sailing, canoeing--there are over 37 wonderful wineries peppered around the lake, local dairy farms for cheese and ice cream tasting, local parks and beaches, biking and hiking paths, restaurants, spas, water parks, even Waterloo Outlet Mall is close for rainy days.
We hope to retire in this lake home someday. With two small children and a family landscaping business we are limited in the time that we spend at the lake. Therefore, we are renting it to allow others the opportunity to enjoy the peaceful setting on the water--renting also helps pay the taxes and with maintenance costs.
So please enjoy the all wood home and the stars - the quiet and the lake.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
With the low ambient light you will see lots of stars. Just walk out the door onto the deck and look up - millions of stars and the sound of waves. In the winter enjoy all the wild waterfowl from all over North America - Seneca Lake does not freeze so enjoy all the waterfowl wintering over - including lots of loons. See Osprey and bald eagles fish and fly. This is a place of peace and quiet - of nature and when inside the wood smell and sight gives a comfort to all.
