Nestled away on a quiet small street at the western edge of San Miguel’s historic Centro, Casa Kaplan is a three-bedroom, four-plus bathroom casa that is full of Colonial charm and surprises.
Enter through the front door into a dramatic open-air sala, with lovely interior vistas of a cantera-tiled central patio complete with fountain, old stone walls and lush plantings. The sala also features a small cantera fireplace and a tiled powder room. Step down stone steps into the unusual living room, including a library alcove, large cantera fireplace and a two-story bar atrium highlighted by a stunning polished-cement bar. The intimate dining room opens up on two sides to bring the outdoor patios inside. It is served by a kitchen that offers the best of both old and new: lovely inset tile and polished cement floor, native basket drawers, modern 6-burner stove and wide oven, polished cement counters, and celadon tile accents.
Across the quaint back patio accented by a cantera wall fountain is the stone casita, a perfect little retreat or study area with its boveda ceiling and “hidden” bathroom behind a wood-burning fireplace.
Upstairs on the main second-story level is the two-story high master bedroom with built-in closets and its own bathroom. A second guest bedroom with its own bathroom is on this same level, across the stair landing from the master suite.
A small staircase takes you to the upstairs terrace, accented with colorful flower pots. From this level you can enter the third bedroom with good closet space, tiled bathroom and small kitchenette, plus its own separate staircase back to the front door – which makes an ideal separate suite for a second couple.
One half-level above the upstairs terrace is a service area, complete with maid’s room, maid’s bathroom and laundry deck with stacking washer/dryer. The maid comes 3 days a week to keep the house clean, tidy the kitchen and do simple laundry (sheets/towels/basic personal clothing, but no ironing). She can prepare your breakfast and mid-day comida on the days she is there in the house.
All this in a tiny alleyway that cars can’t drive through, creating a charming pedestrian way that keeps you apart from city traffic and congestion. The house is minutes away from the Warren Hardy School, and the Juan de Dios church, and is an easy 5 to 10 minute walk from the Jardin. Parking is available in the nearby pay lot owned by the Sautto Hotel.
There is one TV with DVD player in the master bedroom. A CD player is downstairs for music in the living room and dining room.

San Miguel is incomparable in so many ways. It has endless cultural and artistic opportunities and events. The people are very friendly. The weather is great.It has excellent restaurants and shopping. It is unspoiled and oozes with character. And it is close to many other wonderful cities.
The Unique Benefits at this House
This house has a perfect location. It is very close to el Jardin but it is also very quiet. Many of the homes in el Centro are noisy because of the traffic, people, bars and restaurants. But our home is located on a small street that is closed to traffic. Thus it has the best of both worlds. Plus, the grounds are magnificent. There are numerous plants and flowers of many types. Part of the outside area is covered and part is open. It is the perfect place to relax, read, eat, have a drink, listen to music or just daydream.

I have been visiting San Miguel for over 25 years. The first time I went there I knew I wanted to retire there. My wife has been coming with me for over five years and she feels the same way. Between us we have lived in N.Y.C.,Wash. D.C., South Florida and beautiful Montana, where we mantain a summer home. None of these areas are as exciting and welcoming to us as is San Miguel. We bought our first home there in 2004. We had no intention of buying another one but then we found our "dream" home and bought it, turning our first home into a rental.
