Heron Lane House - Windows to a Secluded Waterfront

If you are looking for a relaxing getaway, this Rye Key house is the place for you. Located in Cedar Key, Rye Key is a small gated community of fewer than 15 houses. Our house offers the ultimate in quiet and privacy. It is located on a short street with only two other houses and on a lagoon shared with only one other house. Although every room has many windows, curtains seem unnecessary for privacy. This quiet privacy is only two miles from the historic commercial area of Cedar Key, easily reached by car, golf car or bicycle.
The light-filled, tile-floored house features two bedrooms separated by a great room. Each bedroom has a queen size bed, bathroom, sliding glass doors and a small covered porch. The great room has a living area with leather furniture, a dining area and a sun porch with a wall of floor to ceiling windows overlooking the water. The fully equipped kitchen is separated from the great room by a bar with stools.
There are porches on both the land and water sides of the great room. A private dock allows access to the water. Fish for red fish, kayak, canoe or simply sit and watch the tide change. The lagoon is home to many varieties of birds, including herons, egrets and osprey. Mullet jump, catfish and stingrays swim in the shallows, the big red fish feeds on the oyster bars and, occasionally, a dolphin visits.

My husband and I stayed at the Heron Lane House and LOVED it! The peace, tranquility, and ambiance were incredible! We woke up each morning to the sounds of birds and an occasional boat passing by. The view was incredible and the privacy was exactly what we were looking for. We really enjoyed sitting on the dock, watching the fish jump, and birds all around. Would have loved to use the canoe, but we never figured out how/where to launch it (?). This is definitely a place we plan to visit again.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This house is a very comfortable, bright, airy and large home and a great spot for birding. There is an amazing view from anywhere you’re standing. The pictures just don’t do it justice. There are floor to ceiling windows in the family room, a small deck and wonderful dock for lagoon viewing of the wading birds. The list of birds we spotted just go on and on and you never know what’s going to show up on any day. There is also a nice small deck facing the road for viewing smaller birds. As advertised here on the site, our neighbor really was the osprey and he often spent his nights in a tree right off the bedroom, which has a nice balcony for viewing. The two bedrooms were nice and each had a complete private bath and large closets. The second bedroom also has a small balcony. There is a full size washer and dryer which came in handy for our month long stay. The kitchen was large and adequately stocked although we did have to buy a few things for our cooking needs. Sunsets were nice, but because of the time of year it didn’t set directly in front of us, but the resulting colors in the clouds were very beautiful. It only took a 5 minute drive around to the west dock at Cedar Key to actually see the setting sun. The night sky from the deck is spectacular. Walking in the area was a pleasure as there are sidewalks all around and downtown Cedar Key is only about 2 miles which was a nice stretch of the legs. Along the route we spotted many osprey and even bald eagles flying in a distance. Anne Young was a help throughout our stay and we would definitely stay here again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children, girls getaway.

Can't say enough "positives" about our experience. No vacation for years .... we wanted quiet and secluded but safe, pleasant and comfortable. This house is everything and MORE than advertised! Everybody goes on and on about sunsets and sunrises and you will not be disappointed ...... but coming from my home, I had forgotten the grandure of the night skies! Don't think I slept more than a few hours each night for fear of missing this sight. Great privated dock and plenty of places both inside and out to relax and enjoy. During our visit the weather was both warm and blustery cold, yet the house remained cozy throughout. Anne Young from Pelican Realty was also a pleasure .... friendly, helpful and professional. We will be back!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with young children.

My husband and I have rented MANY homes from VRBO over the years, but this house FAR exceeded our expectations.First of all, it was about two miles from town-which was cute and funky-but a great escape, when you "retired" for the night. The house was very clean, with incredible glass windows which overlooked the water and gulf. The bed was VERY comfortable and we slept like babies at night. There was a HUGE osprey nest in Rye Key, and I got awesome pictures of BOTH "parents" and the baby, in the nest at the same time. And Rosette spoonbills were all around the bridges, coming into town,as well as egerts, and blue herons. We enjoyed eating at TONYS for his WORLD CHAMPION clam chowder, and at ADA BLUES for their VERY good breakfasts.Other than that,we,mostly, cooked in the nice kitchen,or grilled on the available gas grill. One other exception was Moe Beckets SMOKED MULLET which my husband ate most every day.He sells this on HWY.24,before you get to town. A side trip to HOMASSASA WILDLIFE PARK gave us a chance to see manatees for the first time, and a great array of birds. As you can tell.we LOVED this place, and cant WAIT to go back. Thanks Melissa for allowing us to rent your beautiful home! We had a wonderful time during our stayThanksgiving week at your house. Everything was just as was described in the review of the house plus more. The view was wonderful and so relaxing. We sat in the rockers looking out the windows and watched the mullet jump and boats pass by. Our little dog even liked watching the birds out the low windows. This will not be our last trip to Cedar Key. We fell in love with the town! We did not find one local person that was not willing to help us with any information we needed and everybody in the entire town was extremely friendly.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

My husband & I spent our 10th anniversary here and it was exactly what we were looking for! Relaxing, but there was plenty for us to do - biking, canoeing, checking out the shops downtown, going out do dinner. And, the house was wonderful! It was plenty big for the 2 of us, I'm sure we could have fit many more in the house. We would definitely recommend this house/location and would like to return.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

My wife and I spent a week in this Heron House in April 2010. It has everything you need for a get away from the trials and tribulations of our workaday life. The bird life was fantastic the evening roost of the Ibis and 'our' Osprey who would eat his catch in the pine trees adjacent to the house.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+, romantic getaway.
