Built at the turn of the 20th century by famed Mexican architect Guillermo de Alba, this grand residence had fallen into complete disrepair and was purchased as an abandoned relic in February of 2006. Beautifully restored, Villa Ave Maria offers vacationers a most romantic setting in which to experience the real Mexico. By the end of your stay, you will have fallen in love with lakeside living, the town of Chapala and her wonderful people.
Pass through Villa Ave Maria’s original hand wrought iron gates and enter her stunning courtyard and gardens. Follow the pathway to your private casita. Upon entering the foyer with its cantera columns, you will be amazed by the attention to detail this home (1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, living room and spacious eat-in kitchen) has to offer. A centuries-old wall of stone has been preserved in the bedroom and brings with it the feeling of Old Mexico.
A large modern kitchen with all new appliances (refrigerator/freezer/ice maker, six burner gas stove with oven, microwave, coffee maker, blender) and a wonderful skylight is a delightful surprise. Villa Ave Maria's handcrafted cabinets, doors and extraordinary iron work will take you back to a bygone era when rich landowners employed the best artisans to build their homes.
This casita has a marvelous covered porch, the perfect place to have that morning cup of coffee or to spend time congratulating yourself on renting this beautiful home. You are one house off the newly renovated malecon and lakefront. This is a most secure residence where you can relax and enjoy all Chapala has to offer.

Year Purchased: 2006
Rick and I were college sweethearts whose paths crossed once again after more than thirty years apart. We traveled to Mexico in the fall of 2001 and, much to our delight, have returned every year. In the winter of 2006, we purchased Villa Ave Maria with another couple and turned this 100 year old historic property that was badly in need of repair into four separate residences. We hope we have created a second home that will ring with the laughter of family and friends for many years to come.
