A lot of the things that make Carmel such a special place are reflected in the qualities of the Tuckaway Gem: it's peaceful, secluded, beautiful, unique, welcoming, and comfortable (more in the sense of lushness and attention to detail than of feeling worn or intended for repeated use). I was there for 3 days with my dog (a long overdue vacay from family duties), and definitely intend to come back soon, hopefully with spouse in tow. I felt absolutely comfortable bringing my pooch, but note that Bill thankfully provides towels, bags etc. to make sure his doggy guests don't leave a lasting impression! Upon arrival, I found no evidence of dog fur on the furnishings or any surprise deposits in the yard, and the place doesn't smell like dog. Everything you might need is provided on a compact scale, and the decor throughout the unit feels classic and fun. There are a lot of little unique touches throughout, but I was most struck by the way in which-- by accident or design-- the place feels so well-thought-out. The Tuckaway is a small place-- not uncomfortably so, just enough to feel cozy in the best sense of the word-- and because of this, Bill has clearly had to figure out how to provide for all of the needs of his guests in an effective and aesthetically pleasing way. This is hugely important to someone like me, since I love my creature comforts (big cereal bowls, good light in the bathroom and flat screen tvs etc.), but also want to be surrounded by beauty. Despite being located in a residential neighborhood, and tucked under Bill's house, the TG feels very private. Although there's a deck off the main house that provides the eave for the TG (see pix), the main house has a separate deck and yard off its western side , so despite the occasional (heard) presence of the owners, you'll mostly feel like you're the only people there. The house is set into a hill, with an adjacent ravine providing a natural break from neighbors, and you can see a slice of the ocean in the near distance. The garden is just so special... very classic Carmel with lots of non-cutesy, appealing artistic and structural elements. The neighborhood is great-- easy access to walking trails and not far from downtown Carmel. Per the pix, the house is curved; the actual unit is formed of two rectangles in a boomerang shape: sitting area, dining/kitchen/laundry, bed & bath. The bed/bath ceiling area is lower; not a problem for me at 5'6", but tall visitors be warned. Highly recommended!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, tourists without a car, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway, girls getaway.

Four days is not long enough for this wonderful place. Bill is a very talented designer and landscaper. Just sitting in the yard (with our dog) is a refreshing experience. The view is amazing and if you enjoy bird watching this is a wonderful spot! You will feel at home and if you can drag yourself away from Tuckaway, the rest of Carmel is just as enchanting. We had one night of rain but Tuckaway is very warm and cozy. We highly recommend it and hope to return in the spring or summer.Recommended for: Age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We were extremely happy with the accomodations at Tuckaway, it was exactly has portrayed in the listing and in the reviews. We waited until the last minute to make reservations due to the unsettled weather and just happend to pick the 3 most beautiful days that NorCal has had in a long time! Bill was a gracious host, and gave us the perfect beach and restaurant recommendations for ourselves and our two doggies. We did everything we wanted to do including going to the beaches, shopping in Carmel Village, having drinks with the dogs at the Cypress Inn, walking to the wharf along the Monterey Peninsula Rec Trail, touring the 17 Mile Drive, and had one of our top 5 meals ever at the Mission Ranch restaurant! An excellent time was had by all!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, pet owners, romantic getaway.

Although the weather outside was wet and blustery, we were warm and cozy. Tuckaway is a little gem. It looks exactly as the photos show. It's very private and quiet. Our little dog Charlie loved his walks into town and met lots of new friends on the beach. He gives it a two paws up! We do too!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway.

This was our second stay, and it was just as perfect as the first time last year! The Tuckaway is a quiet, peaceful place with all the amenities we needed for our weeklong stay. It's very private, with its own, beautifully-designed courtyard. The owner is thoughtful and is eager to make sure your stay is perfect. We'll definitely stay again on our next trip to Carmel!Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We had a really nice experience at the "Tuckaway". The location was great, a quiet neighborhood yet within walking distance to the central part of town and beach, also within easy access to Hwy 1. The Tuckaway was tastefully decorated and comfortable. It was immaculate, and the bed had beautiful designer linens. There was a private garden with views of the state park beach. Outdoor furnishings and a fire pit made a welcoming spot to sit outside. The owner was very helpful and prompt, yet gave us our space.. We like to wlalk, and Bill gave us a great tip about hiking through the beautiful Redwood park only a few blocks away. It was a highlight of our trip to walk through the beautiful forest to get to the restaurants in Carmel. After walking, we felt we earned it! Great stay, would go again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We spent 4 wonderful days in Carmel. The Tuckaway was a perfect retreat. Loved the beautifully landscaped private garden; fire pit, lots of options to enjoy the outdoors – plush chaise lounges, hammock, settee & covered seating bench while watching & listening to cheerful birds, wind chimes & soothing water fountain. Nice view of the ocean, quiet neighborhood.. Plenty of space in this nicely decorated studio with windows all around. Wonderfully comfy bed to sleep in. Well equipped kitchen, even a French press for coffee. Very clean & well maintained property. Bill was extremely pleasant & helpful. We will most definitely stay again & have already recommended it to several friends.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.

The apartment is everything the previous reviews have said. Even though it's a studio a well placed room divider makes the bedroom private. The front room is all glass and brings the amazing outside in.. The outdoor space is a treat. Great view, the scent of rosemary, fire pit. There also little things everywhere. It bacame a game to discover them. I'm sure I missed severel. My giant dogs and I had a great time and bill was most gracious to all of us.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, pet owners, romantic getaway.
