Claremont apartment description
We are a retired high school teacher and biologist who have lovingly restored our 1892 Victorian home. The upstairs apartment has a separate entrance and an outdoor patio to view our private California native garden. The apartment has a wonderful, inviting 'homey' feel and includes antiques from estate sales and other family possessions.
As you enter the foyer, sunlight pours in from an old skylight put in by the citrus growers who lived in the home. The bathroom includes a claw foot tub and an antique corner sink. The fully equipped kitchen also has a skylight which looks out on a 75-year-old pomegranate tree.
All the rooms have gabled, beaded-board ceilings which have been painted a lovely 'Martha Stewart' green. People who have stayed here, have remarked that the apartment has a spacious, airy and light feel to it. The dining area will sit four people at the harvest table. This room also includes a small 'fainting couch' and two parlor chairs. The bedroom features a full - sized 4-poster bed. The main living area has a pull out couch, a television. Free WI-FI is available throughout.
The small patio area sits under our pomegranate tree and the wrought iron table and 2 chairs make it a perfect spot for afternoon tea.
One can walk to the Claremont Colleges which offer guest lecturers, concerts, theatre and art museums. The downtown village area has many unique coffee houses, boutiques and gift shops. The Metrolink train station which also is within walking distance can take you to downtown Los Angeles in about 45 minutes. Disneyland, beaches and mountain areas such as Lake Arrowhead are also available in under an hour's driving time.
We are happy to provide you with any information you may need regarding our much loved Claremont

Great place to stay in Claremont!
Great place to stay in Claremont!
We loved our stay with Laura in Claremont. The bed was excellent with quality sheets and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals, not just heat things up. We would take our breakfast outside and sit on the patio to eat, surrounded by all the lovely singing bird. You could walk into town to eat, shop and go to the movies. The area is very safe.

Light and airy in Claremont
Light and airy in Claremont
We've stayed several times in this upstairs apartment which has the best location in Claremont. It is perfectly located within strolling distance of Claremont Village, the colleges and Metrolink. There are many golf courses in the area and generally ideal golfing weather. The owners have made this very homey, playing on the charm of the Victorian style and sometimes accentuating rather than trying to conceal the idiosyncrasies of this vintage house. It is light and airy with an especially charming dining/sitting room complete with fainting couch, thoughtfully sited with ample light for curling up with a book. The owners are on site and very willing to help you with anything you need; they are genuinely interested in making sure you are comfortable. They are also a wealth of information on places to go and see. We will return for our fourth or fifth time this spring.

Not what it's cracked up to be...
Not what it's cracked up to be...
The couple who offer this rental are very friendly and helpful. Their property is conveniently located to the village center. Quiet? It's next to a grammar school which does generate some noise. Parents parking in front of the house, walking and talking close to the bedroom window. But not bad. Two bedrooms? They must consider the small living room with a pull out couch large enough for one normal size person, the second bedroom or maybe it's the dresser in the room that qualifies it as a second bedroom, but then where is the living room? The kitchen may be considered by some to be fully equipped, but a fridge that freezes your vegetables when it is set at its lowest setting doesn't meet my standards. The gas stove which functions well looks as if it had been pulled off the streets---something you might see in a bad rental for students. The few spices they have are covered in grunge as are the shelves of the rack. The dining room, the most charming room in the house, has a nice harvest table with a plant on it. On the second morning while drinking my coffee, (the coffee machine is of the lowest quality;it leaves a chemical after taste) I noticed the planter had years of fly scat on it. I don't believe the owners have done a thorough check for cleanliness in some time. The bathroom carpet is dingy. The place needs a few up dates. A bigger bed, a stove which is clean and doesn't look so ravaged, a decent fridge, a better coffee maker, countertops that don't look slapped together, and please don't advertise it as a two bedroom, especially when there is no way to get to one room without going through the other... It's obvious that they love their 1892 Victorian. Their quarters looks like it houses a wonderful kitchen. They spent more on the back porch than they did on renovating the second floor for rental. I wish it had been the reverse. Having vented, I want to affirm that the owners seem like truly decent human beings.

Owner response: Thank you, Michael, for your comments. We have sincerely and thoughtfully taken into consideration everything that you have said and would like to respond. Regarding the antique 4-poster bed in the main bedroom, guests have given us a range of comments from "best night's sleep in years" to "it is a bit too small". Concerning the appliances in the kitchen we have been debating replacing the stove and refrigerator. We will do so after the new year. Based on Michael's comments, we are reconsidering the description of the sleeping arrangements. We will now advertise this VRBO as a 1 bedroom with an adjoining den with a brand new pull out couch which sleeps 2 people. Thank you, Michael for helping us to clarify this. Lastly we want to have our guests know that we have a professional housekeeper come in prior to each guest's arrival. We have many returning guests, mostly parents of college students, who love 'this old house' and love their visits with us.
We had the opportunity to stay here while visiting our son who attends Claremont McKenna College. The location is perfect, as it is only a few blocks to the village. The apartment is very light and airy. Our visit was during Easter and the yard was full of blooming perennials. Thank you Laura and Chuck for such a nice stay!

We spent a month here with our 2 children as we were relocating to Southern California. Laura and Chuck could not have been more hospitable! Their apartment was spacious and homey enough for the four of us. We had access to the back porch where we enjoyed the cool fall evenings after some unusually hot days. The neighborhood was within walking distance of the kids new school and the village with its library, coffee shops, was only a 5-minute walk. We really liked staying here and would highly recommend the place.

About the owner: We are a retired couple who love living here in Claremont. We are active in the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens. We have raised three incredible daughters, one of whom lives in Madagascar. The other two live in the Los Angeles area. We enjoy traveling, gardening and restoring 'this old house'.
Why the Owner Chose Claremont:
My husband's mother, a retired public health care doctor, moved to Claremont in the '60s and before that my husband's great aunt, moved here in the early 50's so we were very familiar with the area and always loved visiting. During one of our visits, we happened to walk past a real estate office with pictures of homes for sale. We were taken by one which read '3rd oldest house in Claremont ....'as is' condition!' We were able to go inside and were both taken by the character and soul of the place but dismayed by the terrible condition that it was in. Given we still had jobs in New Mexico and also the fact that we didn't have to live in the house while some of the major work was getting done, we went ahead and bought it. My sister-in-law rented the upstairs for 4 years and after she moved to Pasadena, we decided to make it a VRBO property. We are so glad we did! We have been very fortunate in the guests that have stayed here these last 4 years and also the freedom to have it available for our friends and family when visiting. They love having the whole upstairs to themselves.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
The style we created was 'cottage-cosy' with the feel that you are 'right at home'. For those people visiting the colleges, it is within a very short walk. There are lots of place to get to on foot so exploring Claremont is a bit part of the fun here. We love this town and love to let you know about our favorite places to visit - whether it's for hiking, quiet walks, restaurants or unique stores - we are here to make your visit a pleasant one.
