Claremont house description
We are a retired high school teacher and biologist who have lovingly restored our 1892 Victorian home. The upstairs apartment has a separate entrance and an outdoor patio to view our private California native garden. The apartment has a wonderful, inviting 'homey' feel and includes antiques from estate sales and other family possessions.
As you enter the foyer, sunlight pours in from an old skylight put in by the citrus growers who lived in the home. The bathroom includes a claw foot tub and an antique corner sink. The fully equipped kitchen also has a skylight which looks out on a 75-year-old pomegranate tree. (For an additional fee,we would be happy to have breakfast groceries - always appreciated when arriving late!)
All the rooms have gabled, beaded-board ceilings which have been painted a lovely 'Martha Stewart' green. People who have stayed here, have remarked that the apartment has a spacious, airy and light feel to it. The dining area will sit four people at the harvest table. This room also includes a small 'fainting couch' and two parlor chairs. The 4-poster bed features a handmade crocheted bed skirt and Ethan Allen linens. The main living area has a pull out couch, a television. Free WI-FI is available throughout.
The small patio area sits under our pomegranate tree and the wrought iron table and 2 chairs make it a perfect spot for afternoon tea.
One can walk to the Claremont Colleges which offer guest lecturers, concerts, theatre and art museums. The downtown village area has many unique coffee houses, boutiques and gift shops. The Metrolink train station which also is within walking distance can take you to downtown Los Angeles in about 45 minutes. Disneyland, beaches and mountain areas such as Lake Arrowhead are also available in under an hour's driving time.
We are happy to provide you with any information you may need regarding our much beloved Claremont

We had the opportunity to stay here while visiting our son who attends Claremont McKenna College. The location is perfect, as it is only a few blocks to the village. The apartment is very light and airy. Our visit was during Easter and the yard was full of blooming perennials. Thank you Laura and Chuck for such a nice stay!

We spent a month here with our 2 children as we were relocating to Southern California. Laura and Chuck could not have been more hospitable! Their apartment was spacious and homey enough for the four of us. We had access to the back porch where we enjoyed the cool fall evenings after some unusually hot days. The neighborhood was within walking distance of the kids new school and the village with its library, coffee shops, was only a 5-minute walk. We really liked staying here and would highly recommend the place.

About the owner: We are a retired couple loving living here in Claremont. We are active in the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens and Laura is Vice President of the Board of Directors for Crossroads, Inc. We have raised three incredible daughters, one of whom lives in Madagascar. The other two live in the Los Angeles area. We enjoy traveling, gardening and ongoingly restoring 'this old house'.
Why the Owner Chose Claremont:
My husband's mother, a retired public health care doctor, moved to Claremont in the '60s and before that my husband's great aunt, moved here in the early 50's so we were very familiar with the area and always loved visiting. During one of our visits, we happened to walk past a real estate office with pictures of homes for sale. We were taken by one which read '3rd oldest house in Claremont ....'as is' condition!' We were able to go inside and were both taken by the character and soul of the place but dismayed by the terrible condition that it was in. Given we still had jobs in New Mexico and also the fact that we didn't have to live in the house while some of the major work was getting done, we went ahead and bought it. My sister-in-law rented the upstairs for 4 years and after she moved to Pasadena, we decided to make it a VRBO property. We are so glad we did! We have been very fortunate in the guests that have stayed here these last 4 years and also the freedom to have it available for our friends and family when visiting. They love having the whole upstairs to themselves.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The style we created was 'cottage-cosy' with the feel that you are 'right at home'. For those people visiting the colleges, it is within a very short walk. There are lots of place to get to on foot so exploring Claremont is a bit part of the fun here. We love this town and love to let you know about our favorite places to visit - whether it's for hiking, quiet walks, restaurants or unique stores - we are here to make your visit a pleasant one.
