Location: Fleetwood, Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina, USA (Ridgeline cabin at 3200 feet near New River)

Accommodations:  Authentic Log Cabin, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths (Sleeps 5-7)

New River Hideaway, located in Fleetwood, NC, is your gateway to a wonderful mountain vacation in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Our cabin was completed in Spring of 2008 and is ready to welcome you to the Blue Ridge mountains for a long weekend or a week away from it all.

New River Hideaway offers a large, main-level master bedroom with a King bed, as well as a full bath, which together can be made into a private suite. A second spacious bedroom, with a King bed, is located upstairs and adjoins a full bath. Also adjoining the upstairs bath is the loft which has 3 twin beds and overlooks the living room. Additional amenities include a wood fireplace, satellite TV, plenty of closet space, a spacious deck with ridge line view, kitchen and dining area, and bar seating, all nestled on a ridge at 3,200ft. This is an authentic log cabin and you will be able to feel the warmth of the timbers while you enjoy the peace and quiet that only the mountains and a log home can bring.

In less than 30 minutes travel time, you can be in Boone, Blowing Rock or West Jefferson. The home of Appalachian State University, Boone offers the casual atmosphere of a college town and is cozy and eclectic. Walk the downtown area to find antique shops, bead shops, restaurants and coffee shops. Portofino's and The Black Cat are two of our favorite resturants. Once an old hardware store, Farmer's Hardware has been converted by the great-grandchildren of the original owners into a fabulous store for shopping both locally-made and name brand 'must-haves'.

Treat yourself to the fine dining of Crippen's Restaurant in Blowing Rock. Located in a quaint, Southern, side-street cottage, you will dine on an absolutely artistic creation designed for the season.

If casual is your preference, don't miss Canyon's Restaurant. The food is dependable, but more importantly, the view is priceless! Inconspicuously built on a ridge in the Blue Ridge Mountains, enjoy a $7 burger and a million dollar view! And you can't leave Blowing Rock until you have visited Kilwin's homemade ice cream and candy store on Main Street. Peek in the stores while you stroll downtown, or let the kids play in the park which is the centerpiece of Main Street.

West Jefferson is the best kept secret in Ashe County with it's Mayberry-esque appearance and two stoplights. Bohemia is our favorite coffee shop. It's fun and funky, has awesome coffee (especially if you need your latte fix), wine tastings, and occasionally features live music. Family-friendly Frazier's and upscale Matthew's are on our list of restaurant favorites as well. One Friday evening per month is host to the Art Walk of West Jefferson which includes several stores that feature beautiful artwork from local artisans. Visit the lush green golf courses and Mount Jefferson State Park while you are here, too. Don't forget the Cheese Factory!

If you are looking for a more active vacation, you don't have to look far. Kayaking the New River is as easy as traveling 2 miles to Riverside Kayak and Bike Rentals. Brian Morrison and his son Brad, have kayaks, tubes, bikes, and horses. Kayak from the back of the store an easy 5 miles to the pick up point, and enjoy the most relaxing, scenic two-hour kayak trip in the area.

More adventurous activities can be found by rafting the Watauga or Nolichucky Rivers, spelunking the Linville Caverns or hiking the Linville Gorge, all of which are within 40 minutes of Fleetwood.

In Winter, skiing and snowboarding are plentiful at numerous mountain resorts including Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain. Sugar offers a kid-friendly (and highly recommended) ski and snowboard school for the beginning skier. Green, Blue or Black, there is a trail for everyone.

When you are ready for downtime, sit back on the deck, among the treetops, and enjoy the mountain ridge view and quiet surroundings. The mountain climate is typically 10 to 15 degrees cooler, and less humid, than the "low lands", providing the perfect escape from the summer heat. And 3,200 feet altitude is almost completely void of those pesky, flying, summer critters. Take a stroll around the area and discover the paths and trails along the ridge - listen and watch for the wild turkeys and deer!

Book your stay today and enjoy a North Carolina Mountain vacation!

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2008

Ken and Wendy live in the Raleigh NC area and have 4 kids. Wendy works as a project manager and Ken in the computer software industry. They enjoy the outdoors, nature and the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Why the Owner Chose Fleetwood

We were really looking to build an authentic log cabin in a place that balanced the 'get away' feel of being out in the woods with places to go for dining and activities. Southern Ashe County, 20 minutes from Boone and West Jefferson, was the perfect place. We are right above the New River where you can kayak, hike, fish and bike while close enough for the amenities of the mountain towns. We are only 7 miles away from the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The Unique Benefits of this Authentic Log Cabin

You have it all for a mountain vacation at New River Hideaway. A get away opportunity with dining and activities a short drive away. In a weekend, you can visit Boone, West Jefferson and Blowing Rock. We don't have a bunch of other cabins on top of us as you may have in Watauga county locations. Just a quiet mountain. With the ridge line view and spacious deck, you can relax and enjoy the scenery.

    • This was the perfect romantic getaway to celebrate our 5th anniversary! What a beautiful log cabin with great, rustic touches! It is surrounded by lots of trees, making it feel very secluded; however, we found plenty to do nearby at Riverside (kayaking, horseback riding, haunted hayride)and surrounding towns. We plan to come back over the years with our family, as there is a lot to do and plenty of room here:) Thank you for sharing this treasure!

    • We were a little spoiled here! The cabin was immaculate and perfect for our girl's getaway. The surroundings were just amazing and so peaceful. Shopping was just a short ride away, as were great restaurants. I'll need to bring husband and kids next time...or not.
